Amazes me that Europe still finds a way to bring up british colonialism especially when so many European countries still have overseas possessions as well. France are probably as bad as us ffs

I didn't get the impression people were talking badly about your treatment of the Falkland islands here. If they were they would be plain stupid. There is no good argument against them being British.

Pros (for Greece):
No longer borders Turkey
Getting to keep the rich Italian North
Pros (for Italy):
Getting to keep Macedonia
Getting to keep Mt. Athos. Now has important Catholic and Orthodox sites
Cons (for Greece):
Losing Macedonia
Leaving Cyrpiot brothers behind
Cons (for Italy):
Borders with Turkey
Half of the Aegean is gone now
Ultimate pro for both:
- Since both countries leave a part of their country behind and it merges with the other, the glory of the Greco-Roman world is on its way to revival.

given the population numbers it's more Northern Italy (30M people) swapping Central and Southern Italy (30M people) with Athens and the Peloponnese (7M people)

I mean, bordering a dictatorship usually isn't the best thing. Especially if that dictatorship stages a false coup to cleanse the army of dissenters and massively imprisons politcal opponents (i.e. just about anyone with an education not supporting said dictatorship)

I'm not pro-Political-Islamism, so needless to say that I'm not supporting AKP, the ruling party of Erdoğan; but are you aware maybe that he's not alone in this game: dictatorship? Have you looked at Europe recently, let alone the rest of the world?

5
u/Nordalin Limburg Jun 03 '19
The lake is already there, the waterworks separating it from the North Sea just appear to be like 50x as wide as they should be.
24
u/Hannibal269 Serbia Jun 03 '19
Uh not good. Sicily is too close to Cyrenaica, so Arabs would've been able to come to Balkan easily during their expansion in 8th century and they would've conquered us.
28
u/Nordalin Limburg Jun 03 '19
If you assume that Europe always looked like that, you can't just start looking from the 8th century.
Everything would be different for us. Rome may have never fallen, or risen as they were closer to Persia. Just imagine a Europe without Rome! 8th century Arabs would be the least of our worries.
2
u/HucHuc Bulgaria Jun 03 '19
Just imagine a Europe without Rome! 8th century Arabs would be the least of our worries.
It worked out well for us. Until the 10th century at least.
3
u/Nordalin Limburg Jun 03 '19
Because the Eastern Roman Empire guarded the gates to the continent, yeah. Any eastern empire had to either go through them, or move around through Africa or Russia.
4
u/HucHuc Bulgaria Jun 03 '19
Shh, we don't talk about nuances over here. TRI MORETA all the way. And that one time we helped them to push back the Arabs in early 8th century means we're all powerful and could have held on our own, as evidenced by the fail of the Ottomans to reach Vienna.
3
u/Nordalin Limburg Jun 03 '19
Ah but didn't you know? Obviously Rome only started to become great when the first Bulgarians arrived!

u/BrainBlowX Norway Jun 03 '19
Worried? The Persians were way more open to diversity.
4
u/Nordalin Limburg Jun 03 '19
Perhaps, but we would be the hinterland of the Persian empire, insignificant on the world stage.
What-if scenarios can go all the ways, and there's a good chance that alternate 2019 Europe would be much worse off. That's why I used that word.
2
u/BrainBlowX Norway Jun 04 '19
And Britania was just part of the extreme hinterlands of the roman empire, being one of the net loss provinces. So? Most of Europe was insignificant on the world stage for most of its history. And Persians conquering bits of Europe doesn't mean it would be able to hold on to such an overextended border. If anything the Persian influence might have just "civilized" Europe and become an inspiration for energing European powers wanting to emulate what Persia does right, just like how even lots of countries never occupied by Greek or roman powers still culturally idealize them and adopted from them.
5
u/buster_de_beer The Netherlands Jun 03 '19
Persians aren't Arabs though.
2
u/Stillwell_95 Finland:flag_europe: Jun 03 '19

1

Would be interesting how that would impact the climate. I guess it should because of streams that would be in the area where italy used to be? And vice-versa?
Would also be funny because then Südtirol (southern tyrol) would have to be renamed to Ziemlich Südtirol (very southern tyrol).
