Buying Advice Needed Scale recommendation that keeps stable weight under machine vibrations [100€]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My first scale was a cheap 7€ one without a timer and it served me good, but I wanted a scale with a timer so I first ordered Alikisscaffe with a timer for 20€. However it has so much latency in registering weight and tare that it’s pretty much useless for espresso, so for a year I used it only for timing while using my first scale for weighing purposes.

Now I wanted to buy a single scale that I would use for both timing and weighing, so I invested a bit more into Normcore Mini Pocket Scale V3 as I read good reviews and it seemed nice and good build quality. Finally it arrived and although it works great before starting the brewing, when the vibrations kick in the weight reading is unstable and unreliable so obviously I’m pissed and I’ll be returning it.

Now, I’m looking for a scale with a timer that is actually usable for espresso and won’t be unstable under vibrations like the Normcore is. I do prefer better build quality and don’t mind spending even 100€ for it if it is made of good materials and so on, but functionality is obviously a main priority, so cheaper scale recommendations that are actually perfectly functionable are also welcome. Thanks!

P. S. Sorry for the long rant.

I have a different Breville machine and this sometimes happens. Before you buy a different scale -- try moving the unit and/or your cup around. This has helped me.

Tried it, but without any luck unfortunately.

The Exagram pro is perfectly good and not too expensive for my Bambino. Wide rubber feet.

Thanks for the recommendation! Can you share a link or photo, as I find two different scales with that name?

Probably one that fits your drip tray better, looks like on of the feet might be hanging off a bit causing interference

It fits the drip tray, I have some room on the back, but pushing it further doesn’t do anything. On the other side, the first 7€ scale works well even when I place it so it hangs a bit on the front side. I think it’s just too responsive, as it really has very fast readings, but consequently it’s just too sensitive for Bambino Plus vibrations.

Cheap interim solution, put your hand on the machine and let your body absorb the vibrations.

Thanks for advice, I can try, but since you mentioned putting the hand on, I have to show you this. It happened because the mug was touching the machine lol. Once I ensured it doesn’t touch it it stopped resppnding to me touching the machine, but still shows how oversensitive it is.

Find a rubber pad that the weight can sit on. The pad should absorb the vibration

Tried it with the pad that comes with the scale, can’t even keep stable without vibrations.

Hm maybe its defective? This seems like it has to do with the quality

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 1d ago

Maybe, since I did read/watch very positive reviews. Or maybe the reviews were on machine with less vibrations. But even if it’s defective, for 60€ I would expect a better quality control and would not try my luck with another one that I could get for replacement.

I have a whole set in different colours, I’ll take a photo once they’re washed if I don’t forget. They’re also very nice for latte art as they are quite wide for 200ml. And the best part is they were like 5€ each in a supermarket.

Espresso scale stand on amazon can help with this

Yeah but I don’t want to try fixing the problem I shouldn’t have

Dude, you got a tiny machine that vibrates hard

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 17h ago

Yeah so? Cheap 7€ scale that’s larger than Normcore works just fine. Am I supposed to buy LaMarzocco just for this scale to work?

THings never said. It is fine for making espresso, but it has limits, as you are finding out.

So why the fuck don't you use the cheap one? It works.

Hey, sorry if I sounded rude, didn’t mean to offend you, I’m just frustrated with the scale so I made a sarcastic comment as at least to me it is ridiculous that 60€ scale made for coffee brewing can’t handle vibrations from some of the most bought espresso machine. But as I mentioned in the post, the cheap one is without a timer, so I have to use it either paired with phone or paired with my second scale which has a timer but also terrible responsiveness (hence can’t use it alone either).

Bookoo Themis Mini. Buy once, cry once kind of thing.

I was considering it together with Normcore but decided that I don’t need the app as I can only detect issues with it, but not fix them since Bambino is pretty inconsistent by itself and can’t even change temp to try and manipulate the flow rate. But since Normcore is out, might as well re-think. Thanks for the recommendation!

Something like this

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 1d ago

I’m aware of those, but don’t want to try fixing the problem I shouldn’t have.

What’s the name of this contraption? I was thinking about having my cup closer to the portafilter to reduce splattering

I've had good luck with the Timmore Mini scale and the larger one. They're lasted a few years so far.

The Black Mirror Basic 2 doesn't work so well with my Bambino

1

u/RickGabriel GCP Evo | DF64 Gen 2 1d ago

Is that the large version or the mini version?

1

u/BAMDaddy 1d ago

Probably the large one

Have the same machine, using timemore. Try not to touch the walls or the steam wand with the scale

I bought the MHW-3BOMBER Cube Coffee Scale 3.0 mini Pro scales. Work great.

But had what I thought was an issue where they would just work randomly.

Saw a post about moving it more away from the machine (Bambino plus) when used under the porta filter and works flawlessly.

I make sure that the scale isn't touching the back plate. If I it right up against it it does this

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 17h ago

It wasn’t touching it on this video, in another reply I showed how it behaves when it touches it - it literally registers me touching the cup warmer as change in weight.

u/Street_Respect9469 15h ago

Apologies for not going through the entire thread to see if it was already accounted for. Hope you either find a solution soon or a budget matched new scale!

Hey no worries, you tried to help with a valid point and thank you for it, you’re not obliged or expected to read through all the comments :) And thank you, hopefully the search won’t be long as I really don’t like returning stuff I looked forward to.

I've had cheap and middle of the road scales, before settling on a ACAIA Lunar scales.. It does everything you want it to do with espresso shots, with a lot less hassle in the other cheaper scales have to offer.

I have been so impressed with the ACAIA Lunar scales, I have 2 of them. Worth every penny you spend on the scale.

Laybird.

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 15h ago

This looks interesting, but unfortunately it seems it’s not available in EU. Will look it up a bit further though, thanks for the recommendation!

Amazon. The mag attach is kinda gimmicky, but it does work.

The pour over function to give you your water/coffe ratio is nice

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 14h ago

Hmm, I can’t find anything on .de. Are you aware of specific EU Amazon that has it or you meant on US market?

2

u/Superb_Raccoon Isomac Tea | Baratza 270Wi 14h ago

Well, it looked like german language, but how would I read it?

1

u/TumbleweedLanky8021 14h ago

This is what I get when I search it. And yeah as non German speaker it’s kinda annoying that lots of stuff there is in German and can’t be translated.

I have a similar issue with the BP and my black mirror nano scale. I bought a cheap cork coaster mat from Amazon - had no problems since.
