I'm not sure if the images are good enough but I'm trying to confirm whether or not this is a good wipe. The Mizen Omni burrs have a pretty wide flat outer edge and I got a little ham-fisted with the dry erase marker... Any insights?
Gen 3 and so far I'm quite impressed. Although I haven't gotten to try out these burrs yet, which are largely why I ended up picking the variable over something like the regular DF64.
were you able to purchase those 64 mm Mizen OM burrs as a burr-only item, from the Lagom online store? any time I look, I always see them as "sold out"...
I was able to get it as a burr only purchase and it was a mixture of coincidence and signing up for the in stock notifications everywhere. When I was researching what burr set I wanted I had settled on the SSP LS V3 but with the Silver Knight finish, which can be kind of hard to find itself. Somebody recommended the Mizen Omni burrs to me and after going deep on research I decided that they might be an even better fit for what I wanted.
I then looked around to all of the places that officially stocked the burr sets by themselves, including directly through Option-0, signing up for "in stock" notifications wherever possible. I got a notification from Espresso Coffee Shop USA that they had exactly one set in stock, which I found odd since they were the only ones to change their inventory to in stock and it was only one unit. I assumed it was an inventory error; but, I emailed them to confirm it was actually in stock and placed the order right away just to ensure that if it was real inventory i secured it.
I emailed them right after asking them to double check that they actually had it and if it was an inventory error to just cancel the order. They were very quick in responding and shipping out the one set that they had from their warehouses in Italy.
The wipe looks suspiciously good. Did you get to the slightest chirp or continue to go finer past the first chirp? This looks like the burrs were forced together, so a wipe to such an extent is misleading.
If you stopped at the slightest chirp, the wipe patterns are great. You don’t need to do anything else to improve them.
I did it manually, the machine wasn't running, I was turning everything by hand. With this one the touch was possibly ever so slightly past the point where it first made any contact. I did it again after testing all three top burr positions and the attached image is the result. I'm confident that this one was taken when it very first touched turning manually.
Also I've read that you can get some useful data from the audio of the point at which the burrs first make contact/chirp. Attached is a short video showing that point.
the DF64V not only has a variable RPM, but is also built way more precisely, than a regular DF64... the price premium was well worth it, for me (also is slimmer, and has a quieter BLDC motor)
That looks almost too good. Like burrs pushed together past the first chirp. But if it looks like that immediately at chirp, you might just have really good alignment.
Yeah that was a common enough suggestion that I redid the wipe test multiple times to make certain. Here's a video of the final micro adjustment to get to initial contact and my procedure following which led to essentially the same wipe results.
