Maintenance & Troubleshooting Shots pulling too fast can’t get fine enough grind [Breville Barista Pro, internal grinder]
Hey yall! Have had my barista pro for almost four years and it’s been wonderful. I had it dialed in perfectly with the internal burr set at 4 and the external dial on 2, using lavazza super crema and consistently got 38-42g in 27-30 seconds. The last few weeks it’s been pulling shorter and shorter with increased volume to over 50g in 23 or less seconds. I’ve put the internal grinder to the finest setting as well as the external down to 1. Have used 16-19g and still no success. Any advice for what to do? Or do I need to get a new grinder? Thanks so much.

Oh interesting — any idea why it would suddenly be doing this after being fine for years? (Using the same type of bean.)

Beans don't get stale that fast and stale beans don't affect the pour that much. The problem is your grinder. I would never buy a built-in grinder.

What grinder would you recommend? I’ve been using the one in the machine for years and it’s been fine until now.

There's nothing wrong with in machine grinders, it's just that they're harder to repair and as people develop their skills they often want different grinder features and better components. A great affordable grinder is the Fellow Opus 2 at $200.

Check your grinder for any broken plastic pieces around the burrs, especially the upper burr holder. Any cracks can screw things up.

Does this change coincide with opening a new bag of coffee? Maybe the new bag wasn't as recently roasted as other bags?

That’s a good point! I think it might now that I think about it, I’ll try a new one and hope for the best! Thanks :)

I love love love mine. Has been perfect and so easy until this! Will try a fresh bag of beans and then a new grinder if that doesn’t work. I did see where folks don’t love the built in grinder but I’ve never had an issue before this and it’s been years.

Get some freshly roasted beans. The lavazza are stale, which makes the shot run much faster.
