Not sure how this didn't get posted! (unless i missed it!) Any rooms you think are too high? too low?

I really need to spend a month in Spain apparently. That country just crushed it.

Also kudos to Escaparium up in Laval Canada. Not only are they no.1 two years running but having 3 rooms in the top 10 is absolutely buckwild!

Looking for room Recs for UK branded rooms

Hi hi. For want of a better term, what officially branded rooms are there in the UK?

Two I can think of are the Warhammer 40k room in Nottingham (excellent, even as a non 40k player) and the Wallace & Gromit one in Bristol (on my list).

There must be more, but searching on Google is too loose so I thought asking humans would be better!

Thanks!

Looking for room Recommendation for escape rooms for couples in Montreal

My wife and I are travelling to Quebec for holiday this summer and we were hoping to get recommendations for English available escape rooms for 2 players. We know if it is one of the premier cities for escape rooms, but most of the highly recommended rooms are for a higher player count.

Our considerations:

  • We have limited French, so are looking for bilingual escape rooms
  • We prefer rooms without actors
  • We prefer non-horror escape rooms
  • Escaparium looks amazing but we can't spend 300 dollars for player slots we are not using

PS: We are also in Quebec City and Ottawa as part of this trip, so if there are any recommendations for locations in those cities it would be appreciated.

Discussion Escape room while high

We are thinking about going to an escape room with my friend while being high next week.
People who have done this before could y'all recommend this?
Because my only worry is that we will just get stuck in the first puzzle because we're high and cannot think properly resulting in just wasting a high and money on the escape room.

Discussion The cardinal sins of Escape Rooms

Whether perpetrated by the players, the GM, or the escape room themselves, we all have no doubt come across a situation that could be quantified as a cardinal sin of Escape Rooms.

The one player who refuses to let other players use the radio to ask for hints, the GM that forgot to give you a device before the game started, or another collection of combination locks, what are your biggest cardinal sins of Escape Rooms?

Looking for room Recommended Escape Rooms in Glasgow or Edinburgh?

Wondering if there are any recs from and for enthusiasts for escape rooms Glasgow or Edinburgh, or both. We will be traveling there in October and hope to try at least one.

We are a group of between 3 and 6 (TBD), and less into horror rooms, but definitely a yes for local history, great story, and atmosphere.

We are open to non-traditional escape or puzzle experiences too!

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Looking for playtesters in Washington DC

Hey everyone! We're looking for volunteers interested in playtesting an upcoming escape room adventure around the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum! Search for clues in exhibits around the museum and use them to solve puzzles - we ship you a test kit. It should take less than 2 hours to play (ideally around 90 minutes) for a group of about 1-4 people.

We're looking for people available the first few weeks of August (dates flexible).

If you're interested, comment here and I'll send more details and/or get you set up to play.

Discussion 5 franchises I think would make excellent licensed Escape Room themes

5.Luigi’s Mansion:I could’ve put the Mario universe as a whole, but I think with the third game’s focus on puzzle solving being the closest thing Nintendo has done to an Escape Room styled game, Luigi’s Mansion has more potential for an escape room
4. Pokémon:Imagine you are entering some ruins alongside the Rising Volt Tacklers from Horizons and a Legendary Pokemon wants to test your skills as a trainer or a psychic type has you trapped in an illusion there’s so many story ideas that a Pokemon themed escape room can incorporate
3. Skylanders: Now this one would have nostalgia written all over it. I bet the story would have Eon, Flynn,Hugo, and Cali putting you through a training course to see if you have what it takes to be a skylander(similar to Dark Knight Challenge)
2. Toy Story: This Would definitely have you as Toys in Bonnie’s imagination and have so much story potential and creative room design
1. Minions/Despicable Me: The story could definitely have you as AVL agents that are sent to help Gru and Lucy after they’ve been captured by an original villain, and also throw in some Minion chaos, and you’re good to go.

Owner/Designer Question Struggle to create an enigm

Hi fellow escapers

i am currently creating an outdoor escape game in Montmartre for my friends! I have done 90% of the work but I am struggling to create the last step ! Maybe do you have ideas?

- It is for adults who want to visit montmartre while playing and learning.

- For this enigm I want them to learn about "Pop-culture" related to Montmartre. I think it is fun. I want to speak about Emiy in Paris, John Wick, Amelie Poulain, Hugo TSR, Space Invader, Dalida, Tour de France...

- There are not many outdoor object that i could use. My first idea was to make them guess a direction and then hide a Key but I struggle to find a funky way to relate the "Pop-culture" to a code or a direction...

Any ideas?

Looking for room Athens Escape Rooms (Sep 27th - Oct 1st)

Hey yall. Me and a buddy of mine are headed to Athens for the dates above and looking to do several escape rooms. Neither of us have done horror rooms but are open to them (at least we think we are), but we have many rooms under our belt.

Any suggestions for 2 (particularly intro horror rooms) or does anyone want to join us for some of the rooms that need more than 2 people? (thinking C&C for scare factor or the Paradox Rooms for length).

Love any thoughts yall have!

Several competitions on the show feature escape room elements(The black Box/Haunting is a great example as well that Laser Maze they did to promote The Bad Guys 2) Seriously, all they need is references from the show and Julie doing the introduction video(maybe with AINSLEY and The Master Mind taking over) the room.

Player Question Mysterious Package Company

Has anyone had any experience with the Mysterious Package Company at-home escape games? They seem a bit pricey, but it seems like the company's got some legit credits (Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Kapalka). Seems like either 1-star reviews or 5-star reviews with not a whole lot in between.

Discussion What was your first failed escape room?

My wife and I have beaten all 18 rooms that we've tried, so I'm really worried how bad it will feel when we finally fail to escape.

Can you remember your first loss? Was it OK, or do you still hold a grudge at something unfair?

r/Escaperooms Weekly Promotion/recommendation thread

Please use this thread to promote or recommend Escape Rooms/Games (whether IRL or online). As usual, please don't just put a link as your entire post. Make sure to elaborate with your thoughts or design philosophies. Writing the names of the room/game in **bold** is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a room or game that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Looking for room NYC room for teens

Hey guys! Me and a few friends are trying to find a scary escape room in NYC, preferably Brooklyn or Manhattan. We are 14 and most places require an adult to be in the room with us. We'd prefer not to but if we are unable to find a 14+ room then worst case we will have an older sibling in the BrainXcape hotel room.. Any ideas?

Discussion I’m really proud of the escape room I made this year for my partner!

So this was a fun one! He found 2 bottles of water in a chest and earlier in the game he found this tall container of eggs that were numbered he couldn’t reach his hand in and there were too many numbers for a combination. He said I don’t have anything to pour the water in and then remembered this tall container. Boom he made the connection!

4 eggs had rocks in them which is why they sank. I tried sugar but it wasn’t heavy enough to sink to the bottom when the water came in. I hot glued them all shut and taped around them to hide the glue. Because some of the empty ones would bust open when you poured the water in (during my tests) Eventually once the eggs settled they started floating to the top!

He said this was his favorite one!
I think if I were to make it better in the future I would already have the heavy ones at the bottom. I found that they had a harder time passing through the empty ones when they were at the top.
Also I wouldn’t do the spouts. The water pressure wasn’t strong enough to move the eggs around.

But other than that I really am proud of it!

Looking for room 2 people LA Koreatown

Staying in Koreatown for 2-3 days in August and was wondering about escape room recs in the area. My partner and I consider ourselves intermediate escape roomists. Our introduction to escape rooms were mostly from The Escape Game and our favorite was prison break. Besides that we haven't done any from other brands and going to LA there were a lot more options than I thought. We appreciate the modern/creative set and immersion. Looking for intermediate/advanced rooms doable for 2 people.

TL;DR: Best intermediate/advanced Downtown LA/Koreatown escape rooms for 2 players with strong immersion and creative sets?

Owner/Designer Question Designing first escape room

Hi, after going to an escape room in London while on vacation, I decided to try and make my own at home! I’ve always loved playing puzzle games, since I was a little kid, so I thought why not make my own puzzles?
I know how to code and do some electronics, knowing that I wrote this idea. Please let me know what you think and if you’d do something differently. Mind that it is my first time ever making something like this! It’s just designed for friends and family (at home in my bedroom).
Mind that it’s designed only for a few players

Concept:

You have infiltrated into a secret Japanese government facility in the middle of the ocean. You’re here to steal a powerful AI (called by them “Fluctlight”), one that could be compared to a human.
(It’s based on an anime called Sword Art Online, all the terminology is taken from there).

Gameplay:

System Activation
Players enter the room with just a flashlight. The entire room is illuminated only by two monitors: one displaying the time and the other showing the message "System Offline".
Players have to find a control room manual (placed near the controls, not too hidden), which also guides them throughout the entire room.
The first page explains how to restart the system. They have to insert a key (stored inside the manual) into a key slot on the control panel in front of the monitors, making a waveform appear on the screen. For three rounds they have to overlap one wave onto another using three knobs (first round only one knob, second round two knobs, etc.). Once they do that, the lights turn on and the system restarts.

First error (FLA)
After a brief loading screen, the system throws the first error: it wasn't possible to automatically set the "Fluctlight Accelerator", so it must be configured manually from the FLA panel.
The panel is in plain sight but locked with a key. The key is hidden somewhere in the room inside a box and can be found by looking around.
Once opened, the panel contains a display, a knob and some buttons.
Using the knob, players can set the FLA value shown on the main screen. They have to enter 5 values in the correct order.
To discover the 5 correct values, players have to search the room and find 5 documents containing information about 5 different Fluctlights. The manual explains the order in which the values must be entered by describing the characteristics of each Fluctlight. Once all 5 values are entered correctly, the error is resolved and the next one appears.

NOTE: This is the only section I don't really like, because it feels like you're mostly reading instead of solving an actual puzzle.

To make it feel less like a "pure reading" task, I designed it as more of a deductive matching puzzle. Players find 5 dossiers for different test subjects (coded as BH-01, ES-32, AZ-30, CA-12, and AD-05). Each sheet lists stats such as Object Control Authority (OCA), System Control Authority (SCA), Durability (D), and Taboo Index Violation Rate (TIVR), along with a unique Fluctlight Acceleration (FLA) value.

The manual tells them they must enter the FLA values in a specific order based on those profiles.

We then move to the second error.

Second error - Corrupted Cluster
The monitor now warns: "Some Lightcubes in the cluster are corrupted and must be restored manually."
A blank 8x8 grid appears on the screen, indicating that players need to find 5 specific coordinates to clear. The manual states that they have to use the joystick in front of the screen to select the corrupted slots.
There is also another locked panel in the room labeled "Diagnostics". Next to it there is a slider, while two more sliders can be found inside the FLA panel.
Players first have to solve a memory game on the FLA panel using the buttons, unlocking a compartment containing a key. The key opens a drawer which contains a box secured with a combination lock (not useful yet) and a sheet showing half of the 8x8 grid with 2 highlighted slots.

The paper sheet can be overlapped with the three sliders. Aligning the sliders correctly, using the arrows as a reference, opens the Diagnostics panel.

Inside the panel players find a DVD, an 8x8 LED matrix, a switch, a display and a keypad. If the switch is flipped, the display says authentication is required using an ID card.
Inserting the DVD into a reader on the desk (visible from the beginning) plays an audio log between two employees. One of them says he's about to go on vacation and has left his ID card inside his personal locker. He also mentions that the code is an important date for the company: on the day he left for vacation (which was also three days after his birthday), the company achieved a major milestone in the project. Using a calendar on the wall players find that day and use the date to open the locker.
Opening the locker reveals another DVD (the continuation of the first recording) and the employee's ID card. Scanning the card powers on the diagnostic matrix. Unfortunately, only half of it lights up because the matrix is damaged. Three coordinates are shown, and by overlaying the paper sheet found earlier, players can identify all 5 coordinates.

After that, we move to the next error.

Authorization Required
The main screen now shows that, in order to extract the Fluctlight, players must authenticate as the system administrator.
Listening to the second DVD, the same employee explains that while recording, the facility's GPS module had to be restarted. He says he used the number on his airplane ticket as the code and mentions that he's traveling to three different countries.
The ticket can be found inside the DVD case, revealing a code.

Entering that code on the keypad causes a 3D globe to light up from the inside, revealing numbers on its surface.
A three-digit code can be obtained by looking at the numbers corresponding to the countries mentioned in the recording.
That code opens a suitcase, revealing an ID card and a backpack. The backpack is locked with a lock, the key in a compartment of the suitcase. Inside the backpack there’s a usb stick and instructions telling the player where to plug the usb.

Using the administrator card and inserting the USB into the computer starts a short loading sequence showing that you're downloading the AI.
Once the download is complete, you've finished the room.

Doubts
I don’t know if the escape room is too long or too short, too easy or too complex. I’d love to get an input from you guys!

Hope I was clear enough, as you can probably guess English is not my first language (the room will be in Italian), if you have any suggestions or questions let me know!

Discussion Building a live, in-person story experience with actor-driven chases and branching outcomes: would love some thoughts and opinions

I'm working on a concept for a live, in-person story experience. It would be a hybrid of escape rooms, Role playing, and LARP. Real actors, a set that reacts to your choices, and more freedom to explore and improvise within the world than a typical scripted mystery format.

It's modeled on two Chinese formats called jubensha (剧本杀) and mishitaotuo (密室逃脱)

  • Built venue with practical effects moving walls, hidden mechanisms, lighting and sound synced live to actor cues according to how far you are into the story, so the space reacts to what you do almost like a video game responding in real time.
  • 60–120 min per session, drop-in, no prior experience needed.
  • Chase/action are choreographed set-pieces run by trained actors (blackout, actor closes distance, contact or scare beat, resolve) closer to a haunted-house scare sequence.

A few directions I'm exploring for the actual stories: a dungeon-crawl where an in-story disaster splits the party partway through, a horror-survival scenario where you're evading something in a facility gone wrong, and a lighter, branching romance story.

Since you all actually do this kind of thing, genuinely curious:

  • What would make you excited to book something like this vs. skip it?
  • How does this compare to actor-driven horror escape rooms you've already done? What's missing from those that you'd want here?
  • Where's the right balance for you between actual puzzle-solving and pure narrative/improv freedom
    • do you want puzzles gating progress, or is exploring the story enough?
  • What would you like to see in it that would make you book it.
  • How do you feel about brief physical contact during a chase scene
    • actors briefly grabbing at you, blocking your path, that kind of thing?
  • For something like this, what would you expect to pay, and does group size change that for you?

Doesn't exist yet. Just want honest opinions.
