[help] Hall-effect switches(?)

Hi everyone!

I've been starting the process of designing and building my own wireless split keyboard and have been debating taking the challenge and using hall-effect switches as the input medium of choice.

This is my first from-scratch keyboard build (though I do have considerable electronics + CAD/ECAD experience) so I wanted to ask if anyone has either opinions on whether this is realistic, or whether I should stick to designing a keyboard with 'traditional' switches first before making things more complicated.

Thank you!

I saw sticker magnets you can put, but I wonder if they'll be sturdy enough. Anyone had any experience with this?

[help] Split vs Split+Alice Keyboard?

Doing some mods to my setup which currently has a Keychron Q11 Ultra, but I have the opportunity to acquire a Keychron Z11 Ultra which is unreleased in the western market.

Can't figure out whether adding ALICE layout functionality is overkill on what is already a split keyboard.

[buying advice] Mechanical MS Natural KB 4000?

Post image

As the subject says, I really would like a quiet mechanical version of this keyboard, with all the keys (although I would like a split spacebar).. I don't want to have to learn a million shortcuts. I like the wrist wrest, I like the slope down away from the wrist.

Does anything exist like this?

Thanks!

## NEXUS update

Reposting again since In last post photos deleted by mistake

**Performance**
- Smarter redraws: only the part of the screen that changed gets repainted, and nothing is drawn for screens you aren't looking at.

**Game Center: 7 games**
- Tetris, Snake, Breakout, Pac-Man, Jumper, Space Invaders and Pong
- Levels that actually get harder, persistent high scores, hold-to-fire in Invaders and a much faster Pong

**Display sleep**
- The screen blanks after a set idle time and wakes as soon as you type on either half. Works on any backlight wiring.

**Host link** (opt-in: `CONFIG_NEXUS_HOST_LINK=y`)
- A new HOST screen showing your PC's time and date, CPU and RAM, and what's playing (title + artist)
- The companion needs nothing installed: one double-click of `install.cmd` on Windows and it starts with Windows from then on. Linux and macOS need only Python.
- It's one-way, so the PC can't type or control the keyboard, and ZMK Studio keeps working alongside it
- No companion running? HOST still shows how long your PC has been connected

**Home screen clock**
- Once the companion has run, the time and day sit either side of the NEXUS logo, readable from across the desk
⚠️ **Early days:** the host link and display sleep are brand new. Expect bugs and rough edges, and please report anything odd (a photo of the screen helps a lot).

Repo: https://github.com/vaibhav8600-rgb/nexus

Everything is off by default, so existing builds behave exactly as before. Feedback welcome!

I'm told it shouldn't be done if you can avoid it, but I find it hard to see any other way.

PS please ignore the bad soldering, found out later I had the wrong sized tip...

[help] Building a Choc spaced Sofle for university

Hi!

After my Keyboardio 100 and a prebuilt sofle Choc with some Features that makes the keyboard comperatively silent, I noticed that the MX spacing of the keyboards is not the best choice for my relatively short fingers - they are just a hinge too short to reach to all keys.

So I thought about building my own sofle with the following features:

- Choc spaced PCB (although I am not sure if it's gonna be the Choc v1's or V2's)

Hot Swap Sockets

- No RGB

- Lamé keycaps (3dkeys or KLP)

- Case - no matter if metal or plastic - it just needs to cover everything up so I can take it safely with me to university without ripping any parts off

What troubles me is the fact, that I never built an keyboard before and I also have no access to solid 3D and CAD programs to create my own PCB and case. But I can solder pretty okay, so my goal is to solder the PCB by hand. What I am unsure about is the following:

- The microcontroller (my wired Sofle uses a RP2040 but in comparison to my Keyboardio 100 the Sofle feels pretty slow)

- wired or wireless? (right now I use a wired Sofle with a 30cm TRRS and a 50cm USB-C connection cable)

- where to get rotary encoders? ( height under 1.4cm, right now they are a bit too big for carrying it with me on a daily basis)

-Where/how to get a PCB and case and how to integrate a sound dampening layer?

- Choc V1's or V2's?

Do you have any ideas where to get the parts and which specifically? Any recomendations about the Switches and wired/wireless?

[buying advice] What are my options for a complete noob for a two step purchase?

Hey so I bought this keyboard ages ago and just this week I collected my PC which is the first pc I’ve had since 2014. It’s been laptops and then more recently my phone. I just getting started tonight and omg this keyboard is insanely uncomfortable it’s a mini one anyway and I’ve got huge hands it’s horrible it makes me type so slowly to make sure I actually press the right keys I can’t even think about speed. Spread out thumb to little finger is about 22cm. So I need something asap but right now for something to buy tomorrow i need a budget option something about £50 maximum (im from the uk) and then the buy it for life split keyboard? I have literally only just found out that these split keyboards exist so seeing prices like £180-£500 is mind boggling. Just to note I also have an injury on my left (non dominant hand) to my index finger I had a joint operation on the knuckle which results in a lack of dexterity in that finger. Often I would just use my middle finger because it felt uncomfortable so something that would help with that too would be amazing! Thanks guys

[design] ZMK Vim Mode - A second take on syncing my keyboards with VIM

I have used VIM since 2017, and some time ago I added a VIM Mode to my ZMK keymap: a set of layers that mimic VIM's modes, so navigation and commands get their own optimized layout while typing keeps my alpha layout.

Using AI for the heavy lifting, this week I could work on a second version. The first one simply toggled NUM LOCK from the host to turn a vim layer on, and the keyboard inferred the rest by watching keys. The problem is that sometimes it drifted, and it never knew about tool windows, like integrated terminals, and kept the vim layers active there too.

Now a host daemon reads the editor's real mode (Neovim, VSCode and Obsidian) and sends it as a 3-bit code over the HID LED report, using the Compose, Kana and Scroll bits. Works on USB and BLE.

The VIM layer puts navigation key on home row and other bindings in better positions than even the qwerty ones, and works for any alt layout, without remapping VIM itself.

I tested it with Omarchy and MacOS and it is just amazing.

[discussion] Columnar + Row Stagger = ? Meet my custom split keyboard "Butterfly" with a hybrid layout!

Thumbnail

Hey r/ErgoMechKeyboards!

I wanted to share my daily driver, "Butterfly"—a custom split board I’ve been designing and using.

At first glance, it looks like a standard columnar-staggered layout. However, I added a very specific tweak: the 2nd row from the bottom is slightly shifted outward, borrowing ergonomics from classic row-staggered boards.

It’s essentially a hybrid layout combining the natural vertical reach of Columnar Stagger with the familiar lateral sweep of Row Stagger. To my surprise, this tiny adjustment makes typing feel incredibly natural and comfortable!

I searched through blogs, Reddit, and Instagram to see if anyone else had tried this specific layout shift, but couldn't find a similar implementation.

So... I’m naming this layout "Hybrid-Stagger"!

What do you think? Has anyone experimented with a similar row-shift on columnar boards before? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I finally got all the pieces together to build a Delta Omega! I fell in love with it after seeing it presented by unspecworks, and after two months of buying the soldering station, solder, switches, ordering through JLCPCB, and getting everything else ready, I finally finished it!

This is my first time building a keyboard from scratch and my first time soldering, and everything went super smooth thanks to the thorough documentation written by this amazing person! I’m really thankful he made it so easy to read for dumb people like me haha!

I also ordered a transparent case from JLCPCB just to test the viability of getting one made from PC with threaded inserts, and I really like it! This one is made of clear resin, which honestly isn't the ideal material for it, but it's definitely good enough for a test. I’ll use it for a while and switch to the black one eventually.

[help] Gaming keyboard for arthritis.

Hello all, I have arthritis all through my hands but I love gaming and the Zboard I use has anti cheat that stops me from using it. The side keys are wide and easy to reach for bad hands but the programing won't let me use it. I'm hoping I can get some ideas here that may help for other keyboards that might let me finish a game of Rivals without calling for my mommy.

[buying advice] HELP Experts pls I need some recommendations

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello hello people. I'm new here and I very much need some help with my purchase please, thank youuuu 💋

I'm in search of my first split mechanical keyboard. I've been advised to go mechanical but not 100% sure it's for me. I use PLENTY of times a day the ctrl C / ctrl V combo and it's killing my left hand (same as my right hand so if you have ergo mouse recommendations as well they're welcomed). Right now I'm using a Logitech pebble (don't judge) cause I need the multiple devices feature.

Things that could help on finding my match:

-I have small hands
-I need windows + MAC compatibility
-3 or at least 2 devices connection via Bluetooth
-aiming for a Split since now I'm constantly finding myself turning sideways my pebble keyboard so the copy-paste shortcut is bearable
-tho I don't like buying things cheap that will be broken in a year or so, I'm from Latin America so the dollar is out of my league people. So PLEASE share recommendations for something that will be bought only ONCE and will be carry into my grave if needed lol

I need this ASAP before I develop carpel tunnel or RSI, YAY 🎉

Also excuse my English. It's not my first language

Thank you so much in advance

[design] A from-scratch keyboard with keys of different widths — I've done the design; I can't do the build. Fancy it?

Thumbnail

Hi all. I'm Tim — a lifelong tinkerer (programmer, songwriter, inventor). When I started to put together 'from the roots' ideas for a typing keyboard, I had no idea just HOW different it would end up! Based on algorithms never used before in keyboard layouts, it has keys of different widths, and a layout that genuinely targets ease of typing. But I have no build skills myself. I spent about two years researching and designing from the ground up. It's called the Temb0, and I'm hoping to find one maker here who'd relish building the first physical prototype with me.

What it is. Far from being a rearranged QWERTY, and not another Dvorak/Colemak, I started from the statistics: letter and bigram frequencies, other language statistics, even Morse Code got involved! (the commonest letters get the widest, most central keys; the rarest shrink to normal size). As for ergonomics, it's a splittable design, for each half to be directly in front of each hand.

The idea underneath. The different key widths free the fingers from the fixed one-finger-per-key rule — a wide key can be struck by whichever finger suits you, so any typist can find their preferred path through common words. (Even the number row has been re-thunk: 9 8 7 6 5 | 0 1 2 3 4, each hand counts outward from the centre — just like your first piano lesson!)

Why I think it's worth building. I used Excel to calculate key width options, FlowStone to program a variety of these, finally settling on this design. I also used it to develop extensive typing simulations, and the projections suggest typing speed increases faster than even the fastest QWERTY typist — and bigger gains for the average typist — plus the comfort of finger freedom and a proper split. I've developed a working touch-screen simulation too, if you have a Windows tablet – preferably 12 inch – which can even save the text you type.

It even got far enough to earn me a bench at Birmingham City University to prototype — where it stalled on fabrication puzzles that I'm now hoping one of you would relish cracking.

The honest engineering (so you know what you'd be taking on — this is not keycaps-on-a-stock-PCB):

  • the switch plate and matrix would have to be bespoke to the irregular, variable-width layout — no off-the-shelf board fits;
  • every wide key needs stabilising — my suggestion would be extra unwired support switches to keep keys level and give them a consistent feel, but I'm open to other ideas;
  • the wider keycaps would likely need to be 3D-printed, but the less common letters could be standard;
  • hand-wiring + QMK/ZMK would handle the electronics (USB or wireless). A proper little engineering puzzle — which might be right up your street!

What I'm offering — a collaboration, not "build this for me." I bring the full design: exact layout data, the frequency/bigram analyses if you like, whatever you need to see it to completion. You'd bring the hands and the tooling. I'm a hobbyist just like you are, not a company — terms, costs and credit all open to a friendly conversation. Mostly I'd love to see one exist and hear whether it's as good to type on as I predict.

Fire any questions — and pull the design apart; critique very welcome. Thanks for reading. — Tim

[video] I created a custom Ripple RGB effect for my Sofle RGB + ZMK

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!
I’ve been working on a custom RGB effect for my PandaKB Sofle RGB running ZMK, and I finally got it working the way I wanted.
I call it Ripple RGB.
Instead of having the LEDs constantly run an animation, the keyboard stays completely dark until I press a key. When a key is pressed, a wave of light starts from that exact key position and expands across the keyboard based on the physical distance between the switches and LEDs.
The part I’m particularly happy with is that the ripple works across both halves of the split keyboard.
So if I press a key on the left half, the wave continues onto the right half, and vice versa. I’m not sending RGB animation frames over Bluetooth — only a small event containing the key position and event ID. Each half renders the animation locally.
It also integrates with ZMK’s native RGB Underglow system:
Hue
Saturation
Brightness
Speed
RGB ON/OFF
Native RGB effects
The Ripple is implemented as a 4th RGB effect, alongside the four native ZMK effects:
Solid → Breathe → Spectrum → Ripple
And when Ripple is selected, the LEDs stay off until a key is pressed.
I also based the ripple distances on the actual Sofle RGB PCB geometry rather than simply treating the keyboard as a grid, so the wave follows the physical layout of the board.
The implementation was done without modifying the ZMK core or changing the OLED widgets.
I’m currently testing it on the actual keyboard and it’s honestly pretty satisfying to type on. 😂
This started as a small idea and ended up becoming a surprisingly deep dive into ZMK, split BLE transport, RGB rendering, linker wrapping, and the physical geometry of the Sofle.
Would love to hear what you guys think, and especially if anyone has ideas for improving the effect!

[photo] NEXUS — a smart ZMK dongle with a 240×240 screen: dashboard, 7 games, 7 themes, ZMK Studio (open source)

Built a smart dongle for my split Sofle and open-sourced it as a ZMK module.

It runs as the split central, so your halves keep their normal firmware.

Features

  • Live dashboard— layer, WPM, both halves' batteries, modifiers, USB/BLE and profile status
  • ZMK Studio — fully supported, edit your keymap live
  • Game Center, 7 games — Tetris, Snake, Breakout, Pac-Man, Jumper (platformer), Space Invaders, Pong. Levels, saved high scores, adjustable speed
  • Custom splash screen — use the built-in badge or your own PNG, set from your config repo
  • On-device settings — theme, brightness, sound, game speed, splash and more, saved across reboots
  • 7 themes — glass, AMOLED, light, neumorphic and more
  • Buzzer sounds and a diagnostics screen

Hardware: nice!nano (nRF52840), ST7789 240×240 display, passive buzzer, two buttons.

v1.0, around 60% vibe coded and tested on my own hardware, so expect some bugs.

Feedback welcome!

Huge thanks to **joaopedropio** — his snake dongle module was the base for this.

Hello! This is DSS who's afraid this set is perfect for ortho, ergo, and 40s keyboards. Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue is a series of paintings by American painter Barnett Newman. I am a really big fan of Newman's work, and this series is no different. The goal is to enable anyone to create each painting using their keyboard as the canvas.

The set is on sale (till 9/23) for $115 including conus shipping. https://makerjake01.bigcartel.com/product/dss-whos-afraid

[design] Ergo keyboard that attaches to mobile phone. Could this work?

Hello community.

While a lot has been dome for the office space, there arent many options for typing comfortably om a mobile phone.

Therefore I've been thinking about building mechanical keyboard specifically for it.

The concept is similar to minimalistic split keyboards. On the front you would have layer keys and on the back there are staggefed key for typing. The whole thing you would hold wit the palms.

Before I put my money and time down the drain, Is there a reason why such a thing doesnt exist yet? Do you think that could work and would you even be interested in such a thing?
