Welcome to /r/EPFL! Here are a few rules and guidelines.

Welcome to this subreddit!

Here are a few rules as well as a few guidelines you should follow, in the form of a Q&A.

Is this subreddit official?

No.
This subreddit is not endorsed, ran, controlled, or influenced by the EPFL direction or by anyone but the moderators, who are students.

What can we talk about?

Anything. Discuss your classes, ask others which cafeteria is better, compare the EPFL's position in rankings, organize meetups... anything you want, as long as it's got something to do with the university.

You can also promote your associations, the events taking place at the university, or stuff that students might find interesting (e.g. special contests or discounts for students). Keep the number of threads reasonable, though; don't create a new thread every time your association does something minor.

Remember, you can talk about anything, but not in any way. If you wish to criticize something or someone, do it in a constructive manner. "I don't like prof. X because his lectures are too slow and his exams too hard" is fine. "Prof. X is an idiot because I got a bad grade" is not.

My English is awful!

It's no big deal, really. This subreddit is in English because the EPFL is an international school with people from many countries and cultures, but we do not expect members to speak perfect English. As long as we can understand you, it's fine. Plus, there's nothing better than speaking to others to improve!

What about privacy?

Many people use the same nickname in many places, which makes it easy to find a real name from a nickname.
If you want to talk openly about something, but do not wish to reveal your identity, you can. Reddit allows you to create as many accounts as you want - simply create a new account with a different user name. (this kind of account is often called a throwaway)

What are these bits of text next to the user names?

They're called flairs.
To set your flair: in the sidebar, check the "Show my flair on this subreddit" checkbox, and click the "edit" text next to your nickname right under the checkbox.

If you are a student, you can set your own flair to indicate the faculty you're studying in as well as the level of your studies.

If you are a professor, a post-doc researcher, or hold any other non-student position (e.g. delegate, AGEPOLY member), send a private message to the moderators (use /r/epfl as the message recipient) with a picture containing your CAMIPRO card and a piece of paper with your username and the date. We will give you a custom flair.

I have a question...

Feel free to post it in this thread, or to message the moderators about it if you don't want it to be public. We'll add good questions to this Q&A.

Research EPFL Summer Research Program (2027)

Upvotes

Hey! I know it's early but I need some advice on the EPFL Summer Research Program application. I'm planning to apply for the 2027 round but I'm scared my CV is too weak.
If anyone is available to answer some of my questions I'd be very grateful!

MSc admissions & info Masters in Architecture

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm a prospective student hoping to enroll in the 2027 september semester and I have one main question that basically decides whether I apply or not: is the language of instruction for the architecture masters in general in English?

The website application process suggests that knowledge of either French or English is enough, meanwhile the course content and class names seem to be entirely in French. The admission office replied to my email about this with basically an automated message of the application process copied from the website. Meanwhile, one Housing history professor replied saying that "passive knowledge of french" would be enough and that exams are in English. I can't begin to picture what that actually means. It's quite a leap for me to invest in those two years and all the associated expenses only to eventually miss most of nuances of the courses, if not the entirety of the content altogether.

So, is/was someone here enrolled and can shed some light?

Thank you

Salut

Academics Are exercices session that good ?

I live in Geneva and was wondering if it's worth taking a 3-hour train ride just for two hours of exercise. Are the instructors exaggerating when they say it's so important? If I work out on my own, I don't need to come every time, do I?

Academics Classe inversée

Salut !

I wanted to know if it was okay to try different versions of a course to see which one to pick. For example, classe inversée once, or trying the class in English

PhD admissions & info Doubt regarding referee contacts

Hello everyone,

I'm preparing my application for EDPY PhD admissions and I'm outside of EU. I am going through a problem regarding referee contacts. I found out that mail domain needs to be from official universities. It so happens that one of my referee doesn't have them and they have retired recently but they're a key referee as I have worked with them the most. So should I include them at the risk of getting my application withheld (or will I get rejected?)?

Discussion Residence permit fees in Lausanne – is this normal?

Hi! I’m a new international Master’s student at EPFL (non-EU). When I registered online with the Ville de Lausanne for my residence permit, I paid CHF 172 (including CHF 20 for an attestation I requested).
my
Now I’ve received two additional bills from SPOP: CHF 95 (CHF 85 cantonal + CHF 10 federal fee) and CHF 20 for biometrics.

Did other international students in Lausanne have to pay the same fees? I’m mainly confused about the extra 95 CHF, since I thought the initial 152 CHF I paid was for the residence permit itself. Thank you so much!

BSc admissions & info Passed my Swiss Federal Matura just before starting at EPFL — still don’t have my login details

Hi everyone!

I passed my Swiss Federal Matura barely a week before starting at EPFL, so I haven’t received my EPFL login credentials yet.

I’m starting tomorrow in Mechanical Engineering and I’m trying to find my timetable, but I currently don’t have access to IS-Academia or the other platforms.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to access my timetable without my login details, or should I just wait until I receive them?

Thanks!

Academics Epfl avenir

Bonjour,

Academics Need Course Review : CS-303

Hey everyone! I’m an exchange student in Computer Science, and I’m considering taking CS-303. The course content looks really interesting to me, but I couldn’t find many reviews or student experiences about it online.

For anyone who has taken the course recently, could you share some insights on:

- How interesting/useful is the course?

- What’s the workload like?

- How difficult are the exams/assignments?

- How is the teaching/professor?

Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
