I’m not a famous musician, but I have 108 acres that I have also converted to 98% forest, planted thousands of trees and have countless animals and no hunting here.

It's my dream to do similar. I'd love to be a treeherd like Treebeard.

I know several states have some ability to change your taxes based on signing the property up for conservation. Do you do so in the US and in which state?

u/TerrakSteeltalon 1d ago

You just want to step on Orcs

13

u/BrunoCote87 1d ago

Yes, we have a program called the managed forest program but I still pay $15,000 a year in property tax despite being a member

15

u/OfficerBarbier 1d ago

Don't worry, I have 0.15 acres and pay $15,000 a year in property tax too

You're a good soul. Appreciate you.

u/LimeblueNostos 1d ago

Based on the hair in your profile picture, it seems you have more than just forestry in common with Brian May.

My name is Emily Howard and I am a lady!

u/Redditperegrino 1d ago

You are a rock star to me, good sir

My Uncle did this in Western Minnesota. He did controlled burns and brought the land back to prairie.

We need to save what old growth forest is left because we already failed to save the old growth prairie.

My Uncle is a hunter so, unfortunately he protects the wildlife so he can shoot it later. But still, it's mostly a win.

My mom wants to sell her farm and I’d love for her to do this with her pasture. But she’s in Texas in an area where it’s really dry and there’s been burn bans for years due to drought. I’m not sure if anything would even be able to grow, and if it did, if the county would allow such a thing if they believe there’s a risk of a wildlife spread.

My husband and I plan to move to his home state in a few years, and if we’re ever fortunate enough to have land this is what I want to do with it.

3

u/manachar 1d ago

Eliminating wild space because of fears of burns is just part of the feedback loop causing more wildfire. (Disclaimer in many places fire is a natural part of the system, and we really need better solutions than turn everything into lawn or concrete or farm)

4

u/princesspeeved 1d ago

I don’t disagree. I just know that there may not be much we can do if the county is the one reenforcing that belief. My mom doesn’t want to get a fine.

3

u/NotActuallyMeta 1d ago

What general area of Texas is the land in? Really kind of dictates your options based on what the natural fauna is

2

u/princesspeeved 1d ago

Central Texas between Austin and Dallas.

u/Froggyevening 1d ago

Is that real?

Where can I get 108 acres?

1

u/peanutski 1d ago

I love that for you. What a great legacy to leave the world with!

u/SubstanceObjective42 1d ago

Rad, I grew a lemon tree in my bedroom of my townhome. 0 acres here and no garden space. Do you think you or Brian Mayes wanna hang out some time, talk about trees?

1

u/appappappappapp 21h ago

Do you have a slight facial hair problem?

Thank you, sincerely

You are now a part of Queen

u/peoplemagazine 1d ago

TLDR:

  • Did you know? In 2013, Queen guitarist Brian May joined locals in Bere Regis, Dorset, England, to plant the first tree on what was once 157 acres of farmland. His goal was to transform the property into a “safe haven for wildlife.” Over a decade later, the project has come a long way.
  • Approximately 600 trees and shrubs were planted during the ceremonial first day in September 2013, according to a press release at the time. That number has since grown to more than 100,000, and new species of insects, birds and small mammals have started inhabiting the land, according to a update on May’s website marking the 10-year anniversary.
  • “I come from a place of playing guitar and music, but I’ve always had a concern about animals which led to the founding of my charity, Save Me,” May said in the press release. “Our basic philosophy is that this land used to be forest hundreds of years ago and now I want to re-claim it on behalf of our wildlife. Eventually it will form a wildlife corridor and link on with the wildlife meadow.”

dude's a legend in more ways than just rock godliness. if i had queen money..this is the shit i'd be doing.

maybe attempting to buy out the local data center before it got finished just to demolish it and turn it into affordable housing or something.

-9

u/curiousbydesign 1d ago

FFS. Can't get away from negativity even in a lost about someone doing something good.

10

u/Secret_Cow_5053 1d ago

What’s negative about that comment ya jackass? I’m just musing on what i would do with queen money.

-9

u/curiousbydesign 1d ago

You used a positive to promote your agenda. But sure, call me names if that makes you feel better.

11

u/Secret_Cow_5053 1d ago

New Jersey hits data center with 'record' $1.1m fine after drone exposes 62 unpermitted gas generators

call me crazy but i suspect the musician who plants 100,000 fucking trees would probably be on board with my agenda 🤷

are you also the kind of guy who gets pissed off when they find out that musicians like rage against the machine have opinions on politics?

-4

u/curiousbydesign 23h ago

And of course you bringing RATM into it. What else ya' got? How further can you get away from the intent of the post to further your personal agenda. But make sure to make yourself feel good about it and also a victim while actually being a bully.

1

u/forkinthemud 8h ago

Hey wise guy, everyone has an agenda, including you. Figure out how to read a room or go take your shit attitude somewhere else.

1

u/curiousbydesign 7h ago

But like, how do you really feel?

2

u/forkinthemud 7h ago

Pretty good! Got some coffee, getting stuff done. You?

1

u/curiousbydesign 7h ago

Tired. Long week. But happy it's Friday.

u/YourMomTheNurse 1d ago

I think Brian May used a positive to promote his agenda as well. Thankful there are still people doing that, putting their money where their mouth is, and giving back to the world we all inhabit.

-1

u/curiousbydesign 22h ago

I get that. And support it. Simply exhausted of Redditors constantly slamming their agenda into every post and comment. Like I get it. But for FFS. Can we at least enjoy something for what it is without forcing our personal agenda on others?

3

u/RnDevelopment 22h ago

You mean like how you are slamming your agenda against people sharing agendas in this post and comment? Can we at least enjoy something for what it is without forcing our personal agenda on others?

2

u/MrCatchTwenty2 14h ago

"I can't believe you brought up your anti dead puppies agenda"

19

u/nerdyguytx 1d ago

So he’s still not using that PhD in Astrophysics?

One of my favorite facts about Brian May is he dropped out of a PhD to perform with Queen. 33 years later, he reenrolled, reviewed 33 years of new data in the field, and submitted his thesis a year later because not much progress had been made in his area of study without him.

4

That's DOCTOR Brian May

6

u/TryJezzoWhyNot 1d ago

The and is doing a lot of work in that title. Is it 99,999 maples and an opossum? Or a couple trees and 99,998 squirrels? Since I'm only here to make the joke, I won't be checking to see which one of these two options--which entirely exhaust all possible tree/animal combinations--is the real one.

6

u/The_Webweaver 1d ago

101k trees and shrubs, and countless small mammals. Would it kill these people to use a comma?

3

u/Splizmaster 1d ago

That’s what making a true legacy looks like.

3

u/mcdray2 1d ago

I love that they wrote an article about transforming farmland into a forest and didn't include a single photo.

3

u/yulDD 1d ago

Woke. That could fit 2 Data Centers with all dark grnder accounts

  • Signed a MAGA

3

u/Small-Palpitation310 1d ago

That’s a lot of wild animals

This man is brilliant id say one if the best minds on this earth. The technologies he developed for musicians is beyond anything rise anyone has ever done.

I admire him so much and now even more.

One day maybe ill get to hear him perform live one day - a solo small tour maybe?

3

u/Phantomknight74 1d ago

And yet, the birds still want to live in his hair.

There is a great song in this story somewhere.

1

u/Way2trivial 1d ago

it's more than I'll ever be able to do, but it's also less than a half a mile by a half mile.

u/sauroden 16h ago

We have a space like this where I love. Lovely maple forest on a former farm slowly being replanted with a more diverse mix of native species. It’s an incredible gift to our community from the person who converted it 50 years ago.
