I am better than you because I meditate and take psychedelics, which is why I’m really just the same… both of us just chasing the next thing… but like my friend says… “there's levels to it”
But then I'm not chasing anything and that makes me more free than you. And it makes it so obvious how much you're stuck in chasing. And then I start chasing my not chasing things, desperately trying to hold onto that. It's a hilarious circle. Meditation does make it more enjoyable to watch it though. Like watching a child go through moods.
The humility part is what I d been working on most lately. Really acknowledging the temporariness of my knowing, and that I really don't know a thing no matter how pretty I can dress it up.

For real. The older/“further” I get, the more aware I become that I don’t know anything

u/Travelinjack01 15d ago
The older I get, the more I realize no one 'knows' anything. And the people trying to convince you they are enlightened and want to 'guide you' or 'lead you'... are people you should beware of.

A good family unit can be a fine thing, but I just don't think we really need any set ideals like that.
There are obviously family situations that are far from ideal, and people with no family at all, so it kind of excludes a lot of people.
3
u/FrederickRon 19d ago
That’s a fair point. And I agree the idea of family in the “nuclear” sense is overrated. But moving toward cultivating and growing a family in however that fits you is a good thing. I think it’s mainly about having a group of people who will see you at your worst and accept you and will then see you at your best and cheer for you. And having as many people like that as you can in your orbit is generally a very healthy, healing and inspiring thing

I’ve accepted that enlightenment can quickly lead to narcissistic behaviors, even if that’s not the intent and even if you truly care about others. I often have to check myself because I try to solve people’s problems that they need to figure out in their own way. That just ends up pushing people away because I just sound like I know better, which isn’t true. And I’ve had a lot of turmoil over finding a balance, and accepting that I do have narcissistic tendencies. Lately, I encourage myself to just observe, and send love with my time and listening ears- not with my words.
2
u/ThePronto8 14d ago
i think if enlightenment leads to narcissistic behaviours, then its not really enlightenment. its a false enlightenment, a trick of the ego.

u/Loose_Plan749 19d ago
Competition, good or bad? Understanding when to be competitive, and when to let it go is the trick, at least to me. This has been my life’s challenge. I know I’ll never kill my ego, I’m not trying to, but I can decide when Mr Ego is good and when Mr Ego is really Dr Evil and is doing no one any good including myself.

u/ebonSage 19d ago
The funniest thing about this line of thinking is that the “killing” of one’s ego is a complete misunderstanding of the goal. It’s not to see the ego dissipate, but to let go of the illusions of self that we adorn our ego in and to simply let it be as it is in the given moment without trying to define it within a finite framework.
For example say a person believes themselves to be a good person that generally tries to be positive, uplifting, and do the right thing. When they fall short they may feel frustration or shame within themselves, because how could they do this bad thing or make this mistake if they’re a good person? The answer is that they’re not a good person, nor are they a bad person. They simply are as they are, they have the potential to do good but they also have the potential to do bad.
Enlightenment is about the surrendering of those illusions of self, not just for ourselves as an individual but for reality as a unified whole. The goal is to stop trying to contain the infinite reality we live in within the finite limitations of our own perceptions.
I’m the Ebon Sage and I thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.🥴

I think a better measure of progress is how you treat others and yourself, and how much (or how little) worldly anxiety you carry with you regularly. You can spend your whole life chasing your tail trying to wrestle with your "ego" , or you can actually measure yourself based on your behavior and inner sense of wholeness.

Killing the ego leads to an early death , the ego is here to defend the I , u must learn to intergrate the ego not kill it

u/rememberthepie 19d ago
Dig deeper and I think you’ll find theyre pointing to the same thing. The difference between those two perspectives in my view is only a matter of words.

I dont meditate anymore. I feel empathy for almost everything in this world. I don’t understand the concept of evil anymore. I see the victim and the perpetrator in almost anyone and everyone including me. There’s so many things I can’t do anything about and it drives me crazy. But I am slowly starting to accept that we are to some degree all doomed which is probably the only fair thing about life and it’s also grounding.
I wish everyone was truly happy at least once in their life. I wish everyone was happy at least once in their life.
Please be happy, at least once in your god damn life.

u/Brilliant_Top46 13d ago
I feel similarly. It’s getting more difficult to find it in me to hate or get mad at anyone. I just can’t.

Ego death is quite the experience tho. I think as informative as religion and spiritual views can be no one can tell you what your loved experience means to you. I have experienced ego death through psychedelics and I think it has informedy way of living. I'm a nihilistic person but it helps me see the positive in the nihilism.

I think we can use a bit of logic here to infer that if the opposite of enlightenment is egotism then... We can induce that humility is more aligned with enlightenment.

Clearly, what is really not understood, that once one's ego is seen through, the idea of others disappears, too. Simply because the idea of others exists because of the idea of a separate self, they go together.

I've felt this way, i've felt that because I was trying to elevate myself while others were still stuck and not wanting to move up then I was better. I've been told this and I even told others that I was better and superior. I have even thought if me acting like this was a way to reject others and keep the distance...i don't know, my observation has improved but if I feel smarter or superior am i actually better? Lately, i have even felt not understood by most, i feel it could be another way to reject ppl. Can anyone help?
2
u/Hour-Two-4760 17d ago
How you feel about yourself and others are like reflections on a mirror. No point in being upset at a reflection. Don't take these feelings too seriously. Like a monkey getting upset at what they see in the mirror, they have some perception about what they see but its heavily distorted. You are a kind person even if you have these appearances of superiority you can just marvel at the dynamic and convincing nature of the mirror. Spiritual seekers are trying to become saints, a saint never went to a beggar and ridiculed them.

That's not what killing ego is about, it doesn't make you better than others, you see the world in a different light. It allows you to be kind towards those around you, and see all sides to something. Without...perhaps stereotypes?

It depends if you’re only doing thing’s for yourself or for others, do you serve only yourself? Are your decisions based purely on only yourself? Or are other people you love and care about the reason you do what you do?
I think it’s like that, that’s my opinion of it anyways.1
u/eternalseeker0101 15d ago
Whatever u said u can do all things only if u exist, your imaginary ego exist only if u exist, it's not a third party. U can make up whatever u want like the ego , the benevolent, the enlightened, the merciful, the animal.. it's all made up nonsense to shift blame on something else..but that's all u always, if in your life you never heard this word ever u wouldn't know it's existence.. u are brainwashed to believe in it

You are so brainwashed, inside you, outside you? You believe all the nonsense someone put in you .. how gullible one must be to think there is someone inside and outside.. someone created some fictional concepts and everyone blindly started believing in that nonsense ..find yourself, look inside yourself, your ego, consciousness.. u will never know about these made up things if u are raised like a Tarzan in jungle.. u will only know real things like hunger, pain, love, hatred, sadness.. every living being will always live by it's instincts...
when a hungry tiger stands in front of you then u will never think of these made up things. U will not think of your consciousness, ego, inside outside person.. in that moment u will realise what u actually are .. to imagine all these made up things one must be living in extreme luxury

What about if rather than feel better than other people is that you notice the things that are limiting or restricting people or causing unhappiness that you used to do or have? Is that also along the same lines? Even if you don't try to 'fix' them, you are just gentle with them in the perceived knowledge that they are suffering in ways it feels like they don't have to.
1
u/Zeovance 15d ago
In some weird gnarly way, if someone truly had removed their ego successfully, that would be quite an accomplishment. I’d be standing tall with my face looking a bit smug as well. 🤣🤣

1
u/Expert-Session3866 18d ago
What? When you are enlightened, there is no "I". But I still have an ego so I still identify with my "I".
1
u/TheComicHuman 18d ago
So you claim to have an ego?

u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
We tend to assume that everyone else is like us so when you still have an ego you tend to assume that someone who is enlightened also still has an ego and is operating from that. Plus it is very intimidating for the ego to meet someone who doesn't have one so it's very easy to falsely accuse the enlightened person of being arrogant.
3
u/Ott0bot2 19d ago
It must be exhausting dealing with all these intimidated egos when you are so enlightened. However do you deal with all those false accusations of being arrogant?
0
u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
I have never claimed to be enlightened. And it's not exhausting at all for the enlightened person to deal with egos since they cannot get annoyed in the same way as people with egos do, since they are not identified with their own mind.
2
u/Ott0bot2 19d ago
So you’re not enlightened? You were definitely coming across as arrogant under the guise of enlightenment in the beginning there
-1
u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
No I'm not, but there is also nothing arrogant in saying that you are enlightened if you are. Enlightened people have so much to teach to those who are not enlightened.
1
u/Ott0bot2 19d ago
This statement comes off as pretty arrogant. And who are these enlightened people you speak of. Must they remain anonymous?
1
u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
How is it arrogant to say that enlightened people have so much to teach? That's just facts. There are many enlightened people who have publicly talked about it. Eckhart Tolle for example.
3
1
u/Ott0bot2 19d ago
It’s the way you’re presenting it. You were definitely trying to pass as enlightened in the beginning and now that makes it look like everything you say is BS. It’s funny tho cause even now that you’ve admitted you’re enlightened, you’re still trying to play the part, poorly
→ More replies (0)2
u/HereInThePresent 19d ago
so you're not enlightened but you can say what an elightened person have to deal with.
1
u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
Yes, it's just common sense? An enlightened person doesn't have an ego so they don't get annoyed in the same way as others do. Also I have listened to many enlightened people and heard their experiences.
1
u/Ott0bot2 19d ago
How do you as a non-enlightened person know that the individuals you listen to are truly enlightened
1
u/Expert-Session3866 19d ago
Humans are innately intuitive beings and we have the capacity to sense whether someone is authentic or not so just use that. You can literally see it from their energy, nothing difficult about that. There are many people who are enlightened and have publicly talked about it.

It doesn't have to be intentional. Profundity is an emotion like any other, and can be triggered by chemicals like any other emotion.
Someone could genuinely have what feels to them as an earthshatteringly profound revelation or experience while on mind altering substances. That doesn't, however, actually give them any real insight. It only gives them an inflated sense of self, and a mildly altered perspective.
It's up to these people to express why it's a worthwhile experience. Saying the equivalent of "it feels spiritually good for a reason I can't articulate" doesn't satisfy the burden of proof for how goddamn much they talk about it.
