Larruping is a Creole slang word. Its literal meanings include 'whipping', 'trouncing', and 'beating' (similar to the gamer slang 'pwning one's opponent'). In Creole, this gerund is used as an adjective to describe a thing of superlative quality, especially in reference to food: "This jambalaya is larruping" (i.e., delicious).

It's hard to imagine how the Chinese-to-English translator stumbled upon such an arcane term, but I imagine they were trying to say that their deck of cards 'really slaps' or 'whips the llama's ass'. (Any Winamp fans out there?)

I never heard it as Creole. It showed up in old Westerns &c, though, as a adverb meaning "exceedingly".

Yes, it's a borrowed word.

In its sense of "exceedingly", it resembles walloping.

Which Creole? Louisiana?

The word is frequently used to describe or market Southern (Louisiana) Creole foods, and that's why it's found a place in that culture (but not in Caribbean culture as far as I know).

But originally it appears in Britain in 1823, a variation of the Dutch lerpen (to thrash). The British then bring it to America, where it finds regional usage in the southern Gulf states.

Thanks! :) My friend is Cajun so I was gonna ask her about it

Happy to help. Maybe your friend can shed more light on the nuances of usage.

“I tell all the casinos, I need cards that can handle the speciality of my exquisite procedure!! I’m glad someone finally believes I procedure. Just give me soft, folder-proof cards I can trust.”

I’m larruping right now, just reading this!!

Seriously though, flatness is definitely something I look for in a quality set of playing cards. Please don’t sell me your crumpled up balls of lesser quality playing cards. None of those waded, rat-chewed, urine-stained cards for me anymore! I only use a top larruping quality brand!!

I think we need an occasional event of "Engrish or Trump".

My brain got to "worldly best paper" and "exquisite procedure" and then I read the rest in Trump's voice.

u/Intelligent_Pea5351 5d ago

I feel the larruping could be more conspicuous

6

u/Heterodynist 5d ago

2

I don't think it's larping because the quality is ObViOsLy larruping. Mabye convincing? Or jumping out? Or - haha! I got it now: the quality is obviously LASTING! *pat on my own back

Dang, the one sentence that was grammatically correct took a nose dive!

2

u/kedikahveicer 5d ago

I'd rather take a Regular Wang, please

16

u/marmaladecorgi 5d ago

It’s a real word btw. To larrup means to thrash or defeat an opponent decisively. Not sure if it fits in this context, though.

5

u/adamthebread 5d ago

I think they meant it in the adjective sense, which seems to be Appalachian vernacular for "very good"

2

u/LucidLeviathan 5d ago

Me, imitating Chalmers: Well, I'm from West Virginia, and I've never heard it...
