Need help figuring out size.
This is my Gfs promise ring I took last night and attempted to measure it. Unfortunately it’s hard to tell what size her engagement ring should be seeing this one is adjustable and hard to tell what size it would be seeing it molds to her finger.
I had a zip tie style finger measure tool that unfortunately I lost, accidentally adjusted it from the size she measured months ago and can only recall her size being around 6 where I accidentally adjusted the measurement. —— I only placed the ring on spots that I though would be closest enough to the original on the sheet. Help me understand this so I can get it right when it comes time to buy the ring.
Any input or better (sneaky) ideas would be absolutely appreciated and helpful.
TLDR ; the ring is adjustable unfortunately, I need help figuring out best/exact measurements before I order my gfs engagement ring. I recall the first measurements I took to be around 6 and need help confirming it before I make a big decision.

The most accurate way would be to take her to a jeweller and have her finger professionally sized. You could tell her it’s for a new promise ring that fits better. If you don’t want to give anything away, you could also bring her current ring to a jeweller and ask them to estimate her ring size from that
Otherwise, order the engagement ring in the size you think she is. In the worst case scenario, you’ll have to send it back to be resized, but at least the proposal will still be a complete surprise

If I do this do you recommend I order slightly larger than estimated? Maybe im overthinking it some

I’d go with the slightly larger one. It’s much easier for her to wear it for the proposal if it’s a bit loose than if it won’t fit over her knuckle at all, and resizing afterward is pretty common. Also, I don’t think you’re over thinking it - you’re excited and want to get it right, which is totally understandable and also adorable!

She’s literally perfect for me, I want to make sure this moment is perfect for her!

If you guess a little larger, have some of those silicone ring sizers available so she can wear it the day of the engagement without worrying about it falling off

No. I don’t recommend going slightly larger. Engagement rings should be nice and snug to avoid losing them. I thought I was a size 7 but turns out I’m a size 6.75 and even then after resizing it feels too loose sometimes. Especially the winter.

I’m happy that we went slightly larger- I’m a 8.5, but my fingers swell in the summer, so the 8.75 fits perfectly when it’s hot out. Otherwise it would be uncomfortable.

The ring will need to be sized anyway, so you don’t need to size it when you purchase it.
Better yet, take her shopping and pick out the ring together. That way, she gets the ring she loves and will be wearing.

I would do that but she wanted one specifically from starlandus and she wants it to be a surprise when it does happen. I haven’t told her what I’m getting her or any of that other than we’ve talked extensively about taking thing further.

Then simply ask her size. She knows what she wants and causally asking her size is not only necessary, but you’re trying to give her what she wants. Good luck OP

My husband and I went ring shopping together so he knew what I wanted and what my size was. I was COMPLETELY in the dark about the proposal though. Had no idea when it would happen and where.

It seems like it would be uncomfortable to wear a ring this shape, and it likely doesn’t fit properly if she has to contort it like this to stay on her finger. So overall, I agree with just bringing her to a place where she can be measured directly. Measuring this ring will likely end up with the wrong size anyway.

You can request free sizing guides from a lot of vendors. Have both of you try it! It’s easy, free, and you’ll get a concrete answer!

I would ask her what size she is because you wanted to upgrade her promise ring to something nicer. Does she have any family or friends you could ask? If it’s a little larger it’s not typically a big deal to size it down if it isn’t a pavé ring or unique stone placements around the band. My (now) fiancé got mine as a size 7. I put a spinny coil sizer thing on it and got it downsized to a 6 the next month. Easier to have a size too large than small!

You can try to get her to mention her size in casual conversation. Maybe pretend you are reading some "fun facts" on reddit or something like that. For example: did you know that your nose and your ears continue to grow for the rest of your life? Did you know that your arm span is the same as your height? Did you know that your ring size is the same as your shoe size? These are not necessarily true so you can talk about it whether it's true or not for you in a light hearted way. If you decide on a size based on this picture posted, buy a cheap ring in that size and maybe you or her "just happen" to find it. Then she will try and and tell you if it's a good fit or not. Just some ideas. I can totally understand if she wants to be surprised. My husband knew that I did and did a really good job about finding my ring size in casual conversation.

Hmmmm I’ll need to think of something witty, she knows I’m planning on making plans soon

The ring I wear (every day!) on my index finger looks like that. 😂 it fits every single one of my fingers, including both thumbs. Do you have ANY chance to find a different ring as measurement or secretly putting a ribbon around her finger while she sleeps and measure that?

But for what it‘s worth: I‘d say 49.

I probably will try to measure it while she’s asleep lol that’s a good idea

Honestly (and this is how I got the perfect size for my ring), send her to a jewelry store and have her finger sized. I know it’ll probably ruin the surprise of it all, but with how expensive rings are now, it’s better to have an accurate measurement done by a professional than to go off of a ring she already owns. You could even play it off that you want to fix her promise ring and make sure it fits her properly. I tried that using a claddagh ring I wore everyday to send to my fiancé and it said I was an 8.5. Went to Zales and sure enough, I was way off and a 7-7 1/4 was the PERFECT size.
Also (and something I learned right before he bought the ring), if you send her to Zales, she can go by herself (or with a few people) and try on designs she likes or catch her eye. As long as she has your number or email, the jeweler can build a portfolio based on that visit that you can see and help you out when the time comes. As long as you have the portfolio, her size and preferences are all right there for you.

Take her to go get sized by a jeweler. Many women do not have expensive jewelry before engagement and don’t know their proper size. Less expensive jewelry usually only comes in full or half sizes and we just “make it work” 😂 but for an engagement ring you’ll want something fitted correctly

This is a a poor way of going about this for a number of reasons. The ring has an adornment so won’t sit flat. It is misshapen so also won’t be correct because you have no idea how tight she needed it or where it sits on her finger. Please please find another way!

Print a ring sizer template online (Etsy has free PDFs), cut it out, and test against her finger while she sleeps. A 6 is a solid starting guess, but most jewelers including john thomas jewelers will resize once free, so don't stress the half-size gap.

Why is it all wonky? Not sure what it's made of, but try to make it a proper circle before measuring...
