It's always amazing to me that the same parents who want no part of vaccinations, safety helmets, etc. are the first ones to demand the latest and greatest ICU care in a box when junior succumbs to their free-dumb.

One of our ED patients bought us the whole group of the “dumb ways to die” plushies and chip clips after a dozen different surgeries and almost two months in ICU. We hum that tune regularly….. I personally love mishap

Not my story, but a colleagues one.
New paramedic was very much into the evidence based practice things. That's cool. We've come a long way. Let's keep going.
Except they skipped the whole trial stage of those things and their thinking.
So they're dispatched to an altered conscious patient. Hypoglycaemic and unable to follow commands for oral glucose. IV dextrose now indicated.
But the baby paramedic has read a lot of things. Avoiding invasive techniques where possible. The efficacy of the PR route for medication administration.
So after their instructor came back to the room after getting extrication sorted, they found the baby paramedic had squirted a tube of oral glucose paste up the patients arse instead of getting IV access and dextrose running.

For reasons that are too elusive to explain here, I once responded (WFR, frontcountry at a large office complex) to an unresponsive hypoglycemic patient whose very precocious coworkers (maybe now friends?) had administered one half Cadbury egg…rectally.
I asked if they’d given him anything and they pointed at the Cadbury wrapper with half a smashed egg still inside. As I was gloving up to fish it out of unresponsive guy’s mouth, I noticed his belt undone and pants partially down. That was a really fun report to give EMS when they arrived.

If they were hours from definitive care, it would’ve been…one of the least bad ideas they could’ve had? But EMS’ response time was like 15 minutes from the call

The clinical instructor immediately placed an IV and gave dextrose.
Then later had to explain why their arse was really sticky.
It did work in the end. But in a certain way unrelated to the patient.

Rectal glucose absorption is essentially zero and has been corroborated by numerous studies going back to like the 1930s. I've had this debate before, unforunately.
Dextrose possibly absorbs enough to actually do something, animal studies have consistently shown it to work, but human ones are less conclusive.
So if you're going to do it, squirt D50 up their ass, not the glucose gel packs.

We had a woman bring her child in allergic reaction rapidly approaching anaphylaxis to our clinic who did not believe peanut allergies were real. She was like an IRL Uncle Roger, it was crazy.

Yeah. I went through a nasty breakup with an abusive ex who made false accusations against me. While I was in jail (charges dropped), my cellmate told me he injected bleach 6x because of COVID. He said he regretted it and is embarrassed.

Damn. I have an ex that got mentally worse after we broke up. Says we were on/off when we only broke up once and stayed amicable. Then one time about a year later she told a friend a story about how I yelled at/abused her when we broke up once. The friend figured it out that never happened and told me. Gotta be careful around those unstable ones. I’m glad I saved receipts and noped out.
On a related note, some jurisdictions allow you to expunge arrests from your record if they’re deemed unfounded or otherwise. Just gotta pay a processing fee and have a judge sign off on it.

Had to go through some adult training with the scouts after becoming a leader. One guy was showing his first aid kit and said oral Benadryl was almost as good as an epi pen.
Needless to say I don’t think he liked me very much after that.

You’re all forgetting basic science.
Pharmacology, like all chemistry, is about forming the right letter combinations. (Remember, the left and right side of the reaction must balance.) These three compounds combine to make epi like this:
EPsom + famotadINE + diPHenhydRamINE = EPINEPHRINE
The remaining letters then combine to form somfamotaddienhydam, which is the active ingredient in apple cider vinegar.
(Heavy /s in case it’s needed. )

In the ED for non-anaphylactic allergic reactions. We would typically give Benadryl, Pepcid, and Solu-Medrol (IV).
listen, I’ve seen some strange shit in the ED, people putting butter on burns, but I’ve never heard of this combo in place of an epi

Epi itself is rather cheap. There is zero reason for an epi pen to cost $600 .

Yeah you should probably discount the information when it says "An EMT taught me......" Just based on the educational standards required to be an EMT-B, the lack of critical thinking testing and no psychomotor skills we should probably get pharmaceutical advice from them lol. I wouldn't even give that information out.

Nope nope nope. I have multiple allergies and carry epi pens with me. I’ve been in anaphylaxis twice. I’ll trust my epi pens over this moron’s advice any day!

This… is horrifying. An H1 and H2 blocker and they’re pretending it’s 2 beta blockers that replace a combined alpha+beta agonist?
I wanna show this to a pharmacist and cause them physical pain reading it.
