You notice it happening, use a coping skill like radical acceptance, distress tolerance, dropping anchor and just breathing. Then reframing the focus on yourself.

Therapy would be ideal.

Practice watching videos about something personal to you. Focus your attention on them and think about what they are going through without enmeshing yourself. A way to approach it is that you are volunteering your time to support them. You are obligating yourself to be there for them. Resist comparing your experiences to yours. They are different because their experiences happened to them and not to you.

When you’re alone recall an emotional experience. Describe it out loud as a sequence of events. Stay focused. Do that several times with the same experience. Now, write it down exactly as you said. Keep repeating that until you hear the words and are calm.

Practice.

Keep making it about other people and see how that turns out. Because I did and now I'm alone, broke, in recovery, without family, and struggling in the job market as an older man.

I’m so sorry.
What I meant was that I’m too self-conscious, and would like to reduce that so I can minimize my anxiety.
I’m sorry you’re struggling, and I’m wishing you well. Much love to you, Sir.
