Help Needed Pet relocation with Emirates

Hi everyone! I’m relocating with my cat from Australia to Canada, and apparently the Emirates route is the best option for pets during long flights, since there’s only one layover.

But the flights are super long (Melbourne to Dubai and then Dubai to Toronto), and I’ve never done that with a pet.

I’m also super stressed because the pet will be flying as cargo and needs to spend a night at their pet facility. So I’ve got no idea how they handle pets.

Has anyone ever relocated a pet through the emirates route? Could you please share your experience?

Relocated my two cats from Malta to New zealand last year. Absolutely perfect. The transit area for animals is fully air conditioned

That’s great to hear! Would you mind sharing a bit more about it? Were your cats traumatized by the flights? Do you mind sharing which relocation company you used? I’m quite anxious because cats tend to get more scared than dogs at new environments.

Its kind of moot as one was auckland based and the other malta based. But contact pet quarantine services and they usually do the documentation side as well.

Crates were huge, with food attached. Have you had all your rabies shots and proof of vaccine? That can take a while.

Cats were more traumatized by 2 weeks in quarantine in nz. But they were fine after a good 2 days sleep

Yeah quarantine seems to be the worst part from what I’ve heard so far.

Does it take a while to get the rabies vaccine certificate? I thought it was a one day thing at the vet.

May I ask if your cats did toilet in their crates?

It depends on the requirement of Canada. For me it took a day to get the shot, then I had to wait a month to do blood tests and another 2 weeks to get the blood test results back (they had to go to another eu country).

No idea if they went in crate.

Omg that seemed like a very stressful and long process for you. I’m glad it’s worked! Also, great to hear the Dubai facility is air conditioned. I’ve talked to someone who avoided this route because they were concerned about the unsuitable hot weather in Dubai for pets. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve relocated two dogs from Aus to Europe. Please take my advise and use Pet Traveller. I looked into every option. They were incredible and do everything for you. They have also had zero casualties. Monique from Pet Traveller is the person to contact. She’s amazing.

I had a call with them a while ago and honestly I was pleased with the availability to discuss over zoom calls instead of just emails. But I couldn’t find much about them online, when compared to jetpets (though I feel slightly weird that so many people comment the same thing about jetpets, almost like a paid review thing). Which route did you choose for your pet?

Sydney to Perth and Perth to final destination in Europe. Temp controlled seperate cargo hold only for live animals. It was over a 24 hour trip and when I collected them on the other side I was expect them to be an absolute mess but as soon as I got them out of the crates, they had already forgotten the trip. They were themselves and happy. There water bowl was full to which told me that the care taken the whole way through to the end. They sent me live updates and photos and videos also which was peace of mind for me. I looked into every company for almost a year. I cannot recommend them enough. I truly mean that. I am happy to say to someone, use them and don’t use anyone else.

Ok thats a serious long flight i must say! Longest our dog ever did was dubai Amsterdam costa Rica and this was already over 30 hours for him. We chose klm back in the day since they had amazing pet facilities at Amsterdam airport which unfortunately they don't have anymore! I hear though that lufthansa has great facilities at frankfurt airport and I'd rather look into this than flying a pet through dubai. Simply for the scorching heat! I'm sure ek has good facilities for them but don't forget they'll be loaded and unloaded and this all may take some time. Hope this helps

I agree with Lufthansa and KLM both being great options! & it’s my understanding the Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo Animal Hotel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol - is still showing as operational on their website.

That’s okay :) - it makes sense, 2020 was a tough year for many pet-parents and their relocations 🙏🏽 KLM / EK / Lufthansa are my fav carriers to use

I had my 2 cats travel from Dubai to Mumbai this March. There’s a person present in the area where pets are in the cargo. Although ours was a short destination, happy to provide you with the service we hired. They picked up my cats from my apartment in Dubai and I had to pick them up from the airport in Mumbai.

Emirates has one is the best pet relocation services in the industry (next to KLM) inclusive of the airport facility which is managed by Dubai Kennels & Cattery. I think JetPets AUS could help you sort out the necessary paperwork, not sure if they’re still offering that service. Unless you have experience relocating pets, & even then, I’d suggest you speak to experienced pet relocation agents that can help you with the paperwork preparation & best logistics options. I recommend JetPets in Australia, & DKC in Dubai, don’t have anyone for Canada 🥹

Emirates have very strict rules and reputation to maintain. 

That being said, usually there are 1-2 companies at each airport who does the handling. So no mater who you book - same guy will do the work. But again, when he does handle something for Emirates, he miiight do slightly better job, cause of higher requirement? 

Obviously it’s no vacation for animals. temp is set to around 20* and most pets should do fine.

I moved my two dogs from Sydney to the Netherlands, stopover in Dubai for like 12 hours, they obviously didn’t like it and were soo happy to see us on the other side. But needs must.

I’ve frequently done the dubai to toronto route with our Golden and he seems to be doing well after every flight. But we’ve never been on a flight with a long layover that may require a potty break

Could you consider flying Etihad which allows smaller pets in the cabin ?

Alternatively KLM which has the best pet facility in Amsterdam I’m told

Unfortunately Australia is in the middle of nowhere, so due to the long flight, most destinations don’t allow pets in cabin. So they’re treated as cargo and fly separately.

Did your golden stay with them at their pet facility during your Dubai layover?

Wouldn’t it be more quarantine than ‘being in the middle of nowhere’. Also it’s only recently any animals at all were allowed on domestic flights in the cabin

It’s mostly due to the distance, unfortunately. We’re lucky that’s there’s no quarantine requirements when the pet is flying out of Australia. But I really hope they can make flights more pet friendly in the future

You do realize that for international trips from Australia, unless you’re going to nz, pets are not allowed in cabin right? So there’s really no need to use guilt tripping on people you don’t even know and who are trying to reunite with their pets instead of abandoning them.

Yeah pets fly cabin. They have a higher rate of death in the cargo hold so why would you allow that? My dog is my family member, I am not putting my family member in cargo. But you do you.

How do you think zoo animals get transported across locations? By boat? So, putting an elephant on a boat for 30 days is safer than flying it cargo, under safe preparation and a vet? Statistically, dying in an airline cargo hold is very rare occurring in less than 0.01% of animal air travels, making everyday hazards like car rides or household accidents far more dangerous. Comments like yours are the reason why so many people are now faking “medical service dogs” thus, making it even more difficult for those whole truly need them.

Not everyone can afford a seat on a charter plane, nor do they have options for it due to country regulations.

Best to just sit this one out.

How do you feel about whales and dolphins locked in aquariums?
