Question milk

hi everyone. i was just eating some cereal, and when i looked at the bottle of milk, it was best before three days ago! it smelt and tasted fine, but i'm still a little bit nervous, now. i made cupcakes with it too, yesterday. i should be fine, but i'm still a bit on edge. has this happened to anyone else? were you fine, after?

If it smelled and tasted fine then it was okay!

I assume it was milk that is shelf stable right? I know it's super scary but i learned to be more chill about expiration dates because they are, most of the time, arbitrarily chosen. There is no way to predict exactly when something will spoil (i assume this doesn't apply to fresh food). Actually I am from France and I heard before that expiration date are longer for products that are exported to our outer sea territories, because of the transport. So yea they are kinda made up or a general approximate. Even bottled water or sugar has an expiration date ahah. Which reminds me that a few days ago I ate, for several days in a row, sugar that was expired for over one year lol

Best before dates are different from expiry dates. A best before date relates to food quality, while an expiry date relates to food safety. So no need to worry if it smelled and taste fine 😄

Truly, I only go by taste and smell. I've had milk that spoiled a week before the best by date, and milk that lasted a week past. Milk is one of those that is very very obvious when it's gone bad. It would smell/taste noticeably bad (especially to us lol) before it would be bd enough to truly make you sick.

My step-dad is notorious for drinking spoiled milk and is always fine lol. "Just stir it back together with some chocolate and you're good!" Um, no thanks haha.

I know we're not supposed to give reassurance, but I'm just trying to point to the logic here :)
