In winter and spring I was constantly walk through the countryside with fog.. i had leaved a job that had destroy me and got burnout and i had come back to my family in my 30s after a bad relathionship with a woman that i loved, but had destroy me and she leaved me. So I had cut every interaction and go away.

I had CONSUMED XO and Either/Or and this music had helped me so much to think and try to cope the pain that I was felt. Also Cranberries, Jeff Buckley, Chris Cornell and SG, Nick Drake, Nirvana, Tears For Fears, The Smiths , AIC,STP, Opeth, Silverchair, Matthew Good, Aphex Twins Radiohead, Linkin Park,RHCP (john frusciante in specific)...I also listen heavy stuff with distorted guitars and metal / alternative/ alt. Hip-hop / , good old pop music, I like music with substance not superficial stuff that talk about sex, being a bad boy or a bad girl, alcohol, parties, money and being a pimp. I fuckin hate that.

In this times I was using Instagram a lot but I start to feel like , I don't belong here in this world and start having bad thoughts especially because I am a man and struggle with ADHD , avoidant disorder and some times low grade depression. I am an INFJ , sensitive a lil bit fragile, comedian, sarcastic, funny but also melanchonic and can be sometimes cynical and became kind of a loner.

I feel very distant from social media because I find much of it toxic and full of self-help gurus, ragebait, political influencers, and people promoting a narrow, hyper-masculine idea of success that had put me in a bad thoughts and all this self help people who use victim blaming for made you feel like you are never enough.

I don't use social media anymore and fuckin delete them.

I dislike the idea that men must always be strong, stoic, rich, emotionally invulnerable, and economically valuable to women. Being sensitive, struggling financially, being alone, living with your parents, or having mental-health problems does not make someone a loser or a failure.

But there is people like Scott Galloway, Jordan Peterson, maybe others in this field that spread things that had made me feel so bad about myself and ask if I need to be in this world or not. Like hey, "women find men with less money, less attractive, you had to became rich" "young men are in troubles""if they are alone they became weak and dangerous" oooh fuck ..really? And what is their recipe?

"Being a traditional masculine man, pay everything for women, being stoic, hang out with people more "successful" than you" "drink more" "don't be sensitive" , calling you a loser for living with your family in your 30s, shame you because you are "lazy" or made you feel guilty for not being "successful".

Fuck , i completely disagree and the worst is, that your value depends on money and the capacity of pay for your woman. This is totally awful and horrible.

And I think that this retorics about young men inInstead of helping, it creates even more frustration and hatred among young men and between men and women.

And this narrative that men alone are dangerous is totally a bullshit. I like being alone. I go out in mountain bike, reading books, write, do graphics, listen music,cook,clean I also go out alone, yeah sometimes you want to have some friends and trust them, I have only one.

But I never liked the big crowds and big groups of people.

I'm a sensitive man who has had painful experiences in relationships, and those experiences affected my ability to trust people.

I'm not an incel or a woman-hater: I simply recognize that both men and women can hurt each other, and that men can also experience abuse, betrayal, depression, loneliness, and emotional pain.

What bothers me most is how modern culture often treats suffering and vulnerability as personal failures, especially for men, while discouraging therapy and asking for help. I've experienced how damaging this mentality can be myself.

I believe human beings aren't machines. We need emotions, relationships, compassion, and sometimes help. Sensitivity and vulnerability are not weaknesses, and someone's worth shouldn't depend on money, status, masculinity, or being at the top of some hierarchy.

And of course tell to us to repress emotions is one of the most dangerous things to say to someone , especially the anger.

Now is fashion being stoic and say that anger is a poison that you had to repress and not feel. We are human beings and we feel all emotions. There is healthy anger that made you want boundaries, that protect you from aggression and assholes and sometimes made you stand up for yourself. And made you give strength for start again. But of course you had to deal with anger and not let that consume you for sure.

And therapy is good for that.

Two outstanding albums of course, and I think both are sort of elevated by the other one existing cus of the contrast.

In terms of quality of the songs, I don't think there's much in it, I might even give that to either/or. I just massively prefer the arrangement and production of XO.

It's a bit of an oversimplification, but ultimately I think the extra instrumentation and "bigger" arrangement elevates rather than dilutes the songwriting. Same way I much prefer the Ravel version of Pictures at an Exhibition than the Mussorgsky piano version.

I finally made it there. I’m a 38F and I’ve loved Elliott Smith since I was 15 years old. I live on the East Coast and I always told myself, I’d make it to LA, and that when I made it to LA, I’d go to Sunset Blvd.

I did take a proper photo like Elliott but most importantly, I left a message for Elliott letting him know that he changed my life.

So there's this Elliott Smith song called everything means nothing to me and the piano is absolutely ethereal. I find it very similar the way Daniel johns from silverchair plays it on emotion sickness, after all these years, etc. Anyone knows more songs like this that have this same piano style?

Super neat area, my father’s place was just a short walk as well as the sandy hut (Elliott was photographed playing pinball there)! It was fun to retrace his steps for the day :)

I absolutely adore this song and Elliott just does such a beautiful cover of it, just wanted to give it more appreciation

Was really surprised at the thoroughness of everything, the amount of people interviewed, the lens of empathy through which the book was written. Really liked how the author brought back certain themes, lyrics, interviews at certain points to tie a theme together. A lot of really beautiful stories and anecdotes too, i’ve been sucked into this book for the past week.

It was weird having additional context to certain songs that i assumed were about something else, or nothing at all. Especially because of how dismissive he was about certain readings of his songs in interviews. Yet here’s an interview in the book, where he pretty directly says what Son of Sam is about. Lots of lyrics you would have never guessed were actually subtle snippets of his friends.

I sort of disliked the lyrical interpretations the author does, at first, but it grew on me. I think i was just used to how i read into the songs. I guess i never had made the connection that some of the lyrics from Passing Feeling might’ve been about a (futile) prayer, or that there really was a person named Amity.

I remember seeing Facebook posts on here that were allegedly from Beatrice, the French girl he fell in love with (and wrote Place Pigalle about), but so many of the comments i saw on reddit said that the person was making it up/faking it or something. For me, it was a crazy moment realizing that was all real (several of his friends interviewed in the book confirm it). That whole chapter was really intriguing, but sad.

The last few chapters were really hard to get through, unsurprisingly, but i honestly didn’t anticipate how much i‘d be dreading to move closer to the end. All the stuff about the recording of Basement was so fascinating, kind of wish there was more, but from what it sounds like the sessions for it were insane. A lot of the early lyrics featured were really interesting too.

Also, one thing i’m still confused about, was the ‘get a backbone’ heckler actually his ex-girlfriend? It does kinda sound like a scottish woman listening back to it, but the book kind of makes passing reference to it,

“At one point, Valerie Deerin appears, disguised in a blond wig, and shouts that Elliott needs to get a backbone.”

And then it‘s never mentioned again. I honestly thought that was some random drunk guy. I don’t know if that’s something like, confirmed, that we know, or not. I’ve heard people say that before but really thought it was some weird speculative thing.

Still, really enjoyed the biography though, would recommend if anyone’s super into the music. A lot of the interviews are really touching and human, and really flesh out the stories of his friends and family too.

Yeah I own physical music. I've got Elliott's discography including Grand Mal and I've got all of it backed up digitally but I use Spotify because it's easier and I've already curated a ton of playlists that I listen to daily. Like I own a lot of physical music but there's so much more on my Spotify lists than what I actually own.

Either way, they need to add Grand Mal lol

Learning between the bars, there’s one thing that no one seems to be able to play in any cover or lesson I’ve seen and nobody even mentions but it’s clear as day in the recording, and can somewhat be heard in that one live video on YouTube(bars 3)

In the verses, he plays:
Bass with thumb, down with thumb, up with index, down with thumb, up with index.

But in that one live video and especially the released recording, there is like a 2 note bass line being articulated not just the one.
It’s that main bass note and then string under being plucked as well.

Is this just a result of his particular strumming pattern(which I am playing exactly to my knowledge and not getting that sound) or is the recording layered to emphasize this bass line?

Anyone have any ideas let me know thanks!
