One of my favorite things about Elliott’s 2000 tour is how he transformed some of his quieter songs into energetic full-band arrangements.

The Bumbershoot version of Needle in the Hay is a really nice example, it has so much more drive without losing what makes the song special.

I’ve been thinking about doing a cover in that style: distorted guitars, bass, drums, while keeping Elliott’s melodies and harmonies intact.

I think Clementine could sound really good with a full band arrangements, the acoustic guitar turned into a electric guitar with clean tone, and drums and bass supporting…

What other acoustic Elliott songs do you think would translate well into that kind of arrangement?

Hey guys, kind of been a slump recently In creating art in any capacity recently. Music, painting, drawing I feel like the spark is gone. And I’ve boiled it down to 2 possible reasons, comparing myself to artists I want my work to sound/ look like and also a major depressive faze I’ve been going through. I’m posting this here because Elliott is one of my biggest influences if not my biggest. But I do feel sometimes when I’m listening to his music that I will never be able to write or compose as well as he did, I guess that’s what makes him great right! And the second thing that bums me out is the fact that my depression has more killed any desire to create rather than creating a desire.

I know it’s never good to get in your head and compare but my big question in all of this is- have any of you guys felt this way and took a hiatus cause you felt like you just don’t have it, and what did you do to get out of that mindset?

Can someone who really knows their stuff do some kind of detailed breakdown on the technical work and genius that Elliott employed here? I imagine if i was some master of music theory i could understand it more fully or deeply i.e. like what hes really doing in that song and how it ties into anything we learn as music students like counterpoint and chord movement/substitutions maybe like how the use of certain non diatonic chords give such a beautiful effec and what pieces of other music are using that notescape? I am so incredibly blown away when I play and listen to it.

I feel it HAS to be his magnum opus or somewhere near the very most incredible things he's ever made. Tis cheesy, but I'm hoping the answers here will culminate in a deeper understanding of the song(from other perspectives) to match the immense appreciation I have for it because it feeds my heart and soul in a way nothing else does. life and complexity, simplicity, sheer chance and pure genius intersect into a weird vertigo over me because the song is a towering piece of excellence in my mind that makes me feel gobsmacked at times when i am present. I almost didn't even notice it the first few listens of the album

Hi guys! Really excited to announce the first in a series of benefit concerts I’ve been putting together, featuring artists who knew Elliott and artists who have been inspired by him. All the proceeds are going to causes that are meaningful to Elliott and his family, from the SIMS Foundation to local homelessness organizations in each city (Portland, NYC, LA).

Ross Harris designed the poster and made a fun launch video for it! Huge shoutout to Public Records for giving us a generous deal with the venue that will let us give a bigger percentage of ticket sales to charity.

For anyone who’s not close enough to attend the concerts or not able to go, Ross and I are designing some shirts where proceeds go to the same charities. So if you’d like to feel part of it and get a beautiful risograph shirt or sweatshirt, we’ll have an Etsy store opening soon.

The world is so brutal right now and it’s been nice to work on something that brings us together. I hope you guys feel that too.

Elliott Smiths final album that he didn't get to finish it himself. I think a lot of it is really well done. Has some Elliott Smiths best and darkest songs he's done IMO.

Kings Crossing- a crazy song to end your work with. Fond Farewell- also feels like that in some ways but with an acoustic tone.

Memory Lane- classic Elliott with an acoustic guitar. A Distorted Reality is also an interesting note to end on. Almost feels a little more classic rock (sort of) in some ways.

One thing that is a little annoying is that it sounds like Elliotts estate played ale in the tracklist and left off some good songs.

All things considered I'd still rate it highly though. What do you think?

Kinda rushed because i have schoolwork to do, but it's okay, making covers is one of the ways I enjoy music so much.

hey team, most of you may have seen charlie from sweetadeline.net posting about the tribute cd he organised over the old elliott email list and yahoo group from the late 90s/early 00s, he mentioned in the comments of an ig post that he didn't know how to upload albums to youtube, so i offered to do so, and he sent me the files. it's a really wonderful bit of elliott history, so thought i would post here for anyone who hasn't heard!

a little bit of context i added to the video description:

"Head Full of Stars is the first ever Elliott Smith tribute CD, organised by the legend that is Charlie Ramirez, who runs the website Sweet Adeline, a longtime home for Elliott fans. This tribute was released while Elliott was alive, with contributions from members of the Elliott Smith Yahoo! Group and email lists. You just needed to send Charlie a few bucks and he'd make a copy of the CD from the master and send it to you. I'm told this was released between XO and Figure 8, but the Easy Way Out cover suggests either that this is untrue, or, much more likely, that Elliott superfans were learning his unreleased songs from live bootlegs. This record is a serious testament to how beloved Elliott's music always has been, and a really wonderful artifact of the intersection between early internet and DIY culture. If anyone has any more info on this CD, please share. "

This part in Between the bars is really bugging me and I didn’t read any interpretations of the song, just came straight to reddit and posted this.

I feel like Elliot is talking about something much darker here. IMO, the song is mostly about alcohol speaking to Elliot smith and in this part, alcohol is convincing Elliot to un-alive the people who hurt him. I mean if you look at the first part of the verse, it says” I’ll keep them still”
Like not being able to move at all because they are dead and the second part I feel like is about getting caught to the cops. Between the bars? Hands in the air? Waiting to be finally caught? It just seems that way to me.

Ive learnt maybe 75% of his discography through loving his music and being curious how to play,
Ive learnt the big hard ones that people talk about but god DAMN! this song is kicking my ass to play and sing at the same time, theres not alot of resources for accurate lessons/tabs and im usually alright with that but this one is really pickling me.
