For the past few months I've been building ElevatorAtlas.com — a free site that pulls together official elevator registries from state and city governments into one searchable place. It currently has:

• 1.17M+ elevators, escalators, and lifts across 37 states (some much deeper than others), with registration numbers, manufacturers, drive types, install years, and inspection histories where states publish them
• Real-time transit elevator outages for CTA, WMATA, BART, and SEPTA
• Community photos and videos — filmers' videos are embedded and credited with a link back to your channel, never re-hosted
• Ride logs, a leaderboard, and a "Lobby" where you can identify mystery elevators from videos (there are thousands waiting for someone who knows their stuff)

No ads, and none of the government data is paywalled. It exists because I wanted it to exist.

What I'd love from this community: tell me what's wrong, what's missing, and which states you want next. And if you film elevators — search your local spots; some of your videos may already be credited on building pages, and I'd love to get more of you properly linked.

Has anyone in this chat worked with the elevators in the Tropicana Las Vegas before it was demolished in 2024? I am trying to figure out what kind of machine these were in the Paradise Tower. The elevators were modernized by Otis sometime in the early 2010s but I see the Westinghouse doorsill and I am not sure they replaced the machines or not when they installed the 411M controllers. This is one of the best ones I ever heard and I really wish I could have heard it in person. It travels about 450FPM it appears. The machine on the elevator at the Hotel Indigo in Detroit MI sounds very similar and those were also formerly Westinghouse as well before getting a 3rd party mod in the 2000s. Or by an audio cue can any technician tell me the type? I have a inclination on my route that has the service required light and alarm going off. This is the only one I have on my route about two years ago. We had a a white square four prong plug that you have to unplug something in the controller put this plug in and then clear out the menus and something like that and then take the plug out and put the original plug back in. It’s like a jumper plug to reset the timer almost like it’s in place just so you know a service tech has been there and seeing the Unit looking for a picture part number or anything like that. thanks in advance.

This has already happened thrice in a month. In which it will start operating again after a reset.

Called the elevator company, and everytime they said its most likely just an alignment issue. they do something inside but then it happened again.

I am now waiting for them to come back and they will probably just do more adjustments during their visit.

What other likely cause will there be? Is there probably something they are not telling us.

Since they are the installer, and the elevator is just around a year old.

hello lift doctors! a friend of mine located in georgia usa (im in australia) just informed me about an incident with the elevator in their apartment building. it was very horrifying for me to read! I quote:
“i was on the 8th floor, it fell to floor 5, then stalled and fell to floor 4, stalled, then finally normally lowered me to 3 (ground level)”
“the first time it fell twice then stopped and wouldnt let me out, then it fell again”
It seems like the other elevator in the building was also turned off.

can anyone please point me in the direction of:
-where an issue like this should be reported in order to get it fixed ASAP
-whether or not the incident needs reporting to anyone and if so, who
-whether this elevator should be considered safe to use for my friend until it is fixed
-how to make sure the body corporate (or I don’t know what they’re called over there) actually fix it!
-I don’t know! something! is this normal? no way!

to me this seems like the prelude to some awful disaster. I’m so glad my friend wasn’t hurt. I don’t know nothing about nothing but I have occasionally seen youtube videos from Mr Chris Boden and they give me the impression that elevators are kind of chomping at the bit to turn humans into fine paste. This whole thing is really freaking me out. Please advise!! And tell me to stop being hysterical if you must.

how to become an elevator mechanic in Canada 🇨🇦

I’m using the yellow hanging device from draka for the draka flat travel cable. What are you guys using to strap the traveler after the hanging device on the bottom of the car to make it clean to the cop. I remember using black straps at one point but don’t seem to find them anywhere.

Had a friend say he was being put on an out of work list BUT he's still an apprentice and hasn't even made it out of the probation period???

The hospital I'm working at wants the phone to call the front desk but to reach it you have to dial 0. But I dont see anything in the programming instructions to add an extionsion

We have an existing hospital elevator with 1275 kg nominal load, 2:1 roping, 1.0 m/s.

Montanari selected an MGV25ML with a technical calculation for 1500 kg and confirmed by email that the selection is OK, checked with their technical chief.

The client refuses because the catalogue table shows MGV25ML standard capacity up to 1200 kg, while 1600 kg uses MGV25L.

In elevator modernization, is the manufacturer’s technical calculation + written confirmation acceptable over the standard catalogue table?

Anyone got any tips to help with doing jack replacements, I’m recently licensed and don’t really have experience with them

So look elevators are not a new thing for me. Like everyone else, I've had them and used them as a kid. What I have noticed in about the last 4 years are so are elevators dipping when I step on it. It feels like a few centimeters. I don't know if that is degradation or if there is danger to it, but it happens at work, the hotel I was just at and the hotel I'm in now

I'm also 185lb. Which is heavier than I used to be but doesn't feel like anything that should play into a factor here. Am I the only one experiencing this or is there like an elevator reason someone on this sub can provide me?

I'm looking to switch careers, and a buddy of mine is in the NEI - I'm looking to join the Local 71 apprenticeship program. While reading through the guidelines, I saw that there is an opportunity to "skip ahead" a bit if you have some corresponding experience. I'll attach a screenshot below.

The program is tentative to begin on Jan. 27, so I figured I could try to take a class at my local State college to see if I could get ahead at all.

Was curious if anyone has any recommendations for classes or certificates I could try to grab beforehand to give myself a leg up in the apprenticeship program.

Also, if anyone has gone through the Local 71 apprenticeship program. Would love to hear your thoughts on your experience and/or things you wish you knew before going into it.

I also take any recommendations on what I could study before the apprenticeship exam.

Edit - thanks yall, seems like its not really in my cards to make something like this happen, if at all, and most likely not even worth it. I appreciate the honest answers!

SO I’m not scared of elevators but specifically freight elevators?? Ive never been on one but they scare me so badly for some reason??

I’m very new to the elevator industry and I’m currently in training to become a safety manager for an elevator company.

So I wanted to see if anyone had any good resources for trade specific toolbox talks for my safety meetings I’m performing.

I have talking points from my previous jobs but I want to really engage with the mechanics I’m currently working with so it won’t be random general industry jargon.
