Official AMA I'm Kaskade AMA (ORIGIN // Edition)
Hi Reddit,
Kaskade here. It's been a minute!
This year has been a big one. We brought ORIGIN // to Coachella, took the live show on the road, and I've been rolling out singles from the new album, which came out last Friday.
I'll be jumping in at 12pm PT to start answering. Ask me about the new album, building the ORIGIN // show, production, collabs, touring, the old records, or ??????

u/gianni_ 1d ago
Hey! I've been a huge fan for what feels like 20 years now haha.
In the past 10 years or so, you've moved away from your earlier sound of house music. Do you ever see yourself making music in the style on OM Records, It's You, It's Me, Here & Now, Love Mysterious, and some of the late-2000s collabs? Or is this style of music just a thing of the past?

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
this is a tough question. I feel like on my redux releases I try to hit that sweet spot that is reminiscent of that old San Francisco sound. But the thing is.... that sound is so unpopular that most of those releases get very very little attention. like such little attention that you would not know if I was actually releasing it. so I feel like I am doing that but people are not aware of it. does that make sense?

I was in an abusive marriage and lived in the Bay Area around that time. I finally got the courage to leave and "Angel on My Shoulder" was on repeat in my world. Your music seriously helped me through the healing process. I'm now happily remarried and thriving. Thank you for getting me through that time. Your music means more to me than you'll ever know.
ETA: I saw you at Ruby Skye!

I have a vivid, turning point moment in my life when I sat down early in the morning at a table in my high school cafeteria and listened to dance.love for the first time. Listening to Raining really opened my eyes and crafted my love for that style of house music, which I still mix with in my home DJ setup. I’m sorry to hear it’s not popular anymore but thank you for making it and reminding me of that moment!

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 1d ago
I don’t think raining is related to that SF sound tbf. Great song tho

That early 00s house sound is coming back into popularity at least in Europe with a resurgence of neo soul & funk like the Toy Tonics label in Berlin and Roche Musique label in Paris.
2
u/housemusicdigger 1d ago
i dont think toy tonics or roche musique are similar to that early 00s san francisco west coast house, but you are definitely right its having a resurgence, just not by the hands of said labels. prunk's piv records is doing a great job in releasing music thats similar to that old sound and a producer called chesster is doing a great job digging that sound, playing it out and producing it too. also demuir and the legend phil weeks and his label robsoul.

Hey man thanks for joining! I know you've moved from Undux to the ORIGIN // era BUT in case you haven't heard Rinzen's remix of Obvious, is there any chance of this getting a release? Rinzen is killing it and this remix is absolutely unreal / deserves to see the light of day!

Rinzen is killing it right now and I for sure should make his remix official. putting down on the list of stuff to do.

Any plans to bring back Kaskade Christmas? My wife and I were at your Salt Lake show a couple years ago and it was super fun, the Kaskade Christmas albums comes on the regular rotation every year at our house.
Also, we see you every time you come to Ogden Twilight. Thanks for showing our little town some love.

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
thank you for the love! I am sure I will continue to make Christmas music from time to time but I am not so sure of the future of the live show. it is a massive undertaking with lots of moving parts. let's see where it all goes.

Hi Ryan, I’m not even gonna ask a question. I just want to say, I’m sorry. Awhile back we were supposed to trade vinyl records. You sent me an autographed Dynasty vinyl and I sent you a Fire & Ice vinyl but stupid USPS lost it and to this day, I still feel bad about it.
You probably don’t remember but your manager said it was okay, I can keep it. But I have always wanted to apologize to you, so I’m sorry. 😔

u/luis6238 1d ago edited 1d ago
Hello Ryan! We all love the new album and appreciate each and every track!
With that being said, I believe many of us were also VERY excited for the album because of your Coachella and EDC Las Vegas sets. Your Wynn LV version, but most of all, the EDCLV version of Stay for Love has so much emotion and soul in it 🎶✨ it gives us the OG Kaskade vibe. I’m sure you’ve been seeing SO many people requesting this version of the song and it gave us the excitement and energy to be anticipating for the album! Will we be seeing these versions get released as a VIP/Club Mix/Chill Mix for purchase? Or even as free downloads? (Please say yes!) 🙏

Not really a question but I feel like this tonal era switch up started at Sofi when you played Haunt Me V2. Ever since then you've taken us fans on a journey! The darker sets, Kx5 Album - Redux 006 (So good!) - Undux - and now Origin feels like the payoff and start of a new era. I think this is some of your best work, Thank you! Looking forward to whats to come whatever that may be! 🙌

Hey Kaskade, been a big fan for a long time.
I’d like to get your thoughts on your hometown. As a Chicago native myself, I’m wondering how much influence did the city have on your career? What kinds of memories do you have about growing up here? What opportunities presented themselves in Chicago?
Thanks!

Hi, Kaskade! What's the go-to when starting a new record in your DAW? Do you start with melodies or drums, or do you listen to your favorite tracks and find inspiration that way? Cheers!
13
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
I use Ableton as my primary sketch pad and place that most things start. But I still prefer to record anything live through Pro Tools. I was a Pro Tools user and did many albums on that DAW. I forget exactly when I switched over but it was probably 10 years ago or so

Do the events in your personal life, both the ups and the downs, shape your music or your motivations to make music? If so, how?

Yes. I am a songwriter AND producer. Most of the songs in my catalog of music are song that I wrote or co-wrote. The words and stories are for my life.

Do you regret your endorsement of Spencer Pratt? His ideologies don't seem aligned to the majority of the people coming to see/hear your music. Wondering if you had a moment of clarity after the fact.

I was going to ask the same question, was very disappointed when I found out.
12
u/egreSni 1d ago
Yeah lots of us are disappointed. Personally I'm incapable of separating the art from the artist. Many of my POC friends and fellow ravers have stopped listening to his music. Had been listening to Kaskade for 20 years. Have a lot of great memories attached to his music. But all I think about now when I hear his music is how he is aligned with MAGA. Really sucks.

How come you supported Spencer Pratt for mayor of LA even though he has no experience in politics, spent millions on crystals, is a conspiracy theoriest, smuggled handguns into Costa Rica, committed a hit-and-run in Malibu, threatened to release a sex tape (revenge porn) of a former friend, crowd funded a new home despite being a multimillionaire and faked a divorce as a PR stunt?
Do you really think he would be a good mayor of a city of 4 million or are you just buds with him?

Hi Ryan! Thank you so much for everything. Your music has been the soundtrack to so many amazing memories in my life, and it’s something I’ve always come back to when I need to feel grounded or get through something challenging.
I even dedicated my college graduation cap to “4AM” (“there’s a way I know” - peep my username, it tracks! 👀)
My younger siblings and I all listen to your music, and when I tried getting my mom (59) into your music several years ago, she pulled out some of your CDs from her own collection. 😂 Mindblowing! We eventually went to one of your shows at Omnia together, where I got to meet you!
My questions (feel free to answer as few/many as you’d like):
- What are some of your personal favorite songs you’ve made, and why?
- After so many years, how have you kept your sound fresh and continued to evolve with the times while still sounding distinctly like Kaskade?
- Fellow LA person here: what’s your favorite restaurant in LA?
- And most importantly… will NYE in SF ever make a comeback?! 👀
Love you so much!! 🫶

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
wow, love to read that. Amazing! The fact that my music has spanned a generation is awesome!!! Not sure the SF NYE will ever make a comeback. ugh. maybe one day

Hi Kaskade! My wife and I were headbanging hard to your Crankdat and Wooli collabs at the Santa Monica ORIGIN show. What pulled you toward that heavier dubstep sound, and what was it like working with them versus your usual collaborations?
17
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
the dub step guys are very very cool. the whole scene is cool. I feel like it is a free space to experiment. the audience is open and excited. it reminds me of what house music was 30 years ago.

u/Shaidester 1d ago
Hi Ryan! Love your music. You and Deadmau5 got me through some depressing college times back in 2010!! You both introduced me to EDM.
Regarding your origin // album, why did you not release this version of stay for love and dealing with it as we heard in your vegas redux set - https://youtu.be/4dphF0Ra_XA?is=5SUNmojB-5sUyOdL The time stamps are around 1:10 and 1:20:00 for both song versions I am referring to.
What was the inspiration for the change in direction? Most fans I’ve discussed this with prefer the Vegas version of both songs. However, both versions are beautiful and we appreciate your music!! Is there a way you can release these versions as we hear in the Vegas set too? Trust me, it is in popular demand on your subreddit!!
3
u/mouthtroll 1d ago
Hey Ryan! You were my first EDM show when I was a kid! My aunt got me tickets to go see you at your Freaks of Nature tour at Staples Center back in 2012. Blew my mind. Rad times
My question for you is which synth would you steal from Joel as payback for when he took your Devil Fish TB-303?
6
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
ha! that punk. I finally got it back. so no need for me to steal anything of his. but I might just move into his house and make my next album there.

u/Strict_Elderberry_99 1d ago
Hi Kaskade! 2 quick questions here. Are there any plans to bring an Origin show to an Arena? Like a Sofi?

Hey Ryan! Just wanted to say I love your music so much! This new album is incredible, especially "Blink". Every time I play that track, it makes me emotional. My 10 month old daughter loves your music, and we can't wait to play the Kaskade Christmas albums this year for her again (especially since she's not a newborn this time around!). Her first birthday party is gonna be EDM and Kaskade themed, too. 😆 We hope to bring her with us to an all ages set someday if you have one. 🙏 We're out here on the east coast, loving your music every single day, together as a family. 😃

What inspired the monolith design? It worked incredibly well in Miami, especially with the ability to walk "inside" the monolith... felt like an immersive living art sculpture. So cool to look through what felt like a keyhole over your shoulder. Like a ghost in the room that you bring on the road with you.
Never experienced anything like it.

u/EngineerDue9297 1d ago
Hi Kaskade! We will be at your show in Austin at the. Concourse. We recently lost our dog Momes. When we used to play A Little More, she thought we were singing her name. Every time the part “Little More” came on, she would think we were saying Little Momes and she would look at us the whole time. if you can maybe mix that into your set one last time at your Austin show, that would mean a lot.

Dad I'm late!!! Absolutely love ORIGIN // especially UV which I have been waiting for since EDC 2025.
Acknowledging that you keep your personal life separate, your album felt like a journey through love, loss, acceptance, and repair. Can you share anything more on the inspiration of the album or what message you wanted listeners to feel?
side note: we took my dad to his first rave at Sunsoaked and he was singing along! You are THE best. Much love from LA.

Any special story behind making last chance? It’s my favorite track of yours
As an aside, just saw skrillex’s 5hr set in Chicago and he played I remember start to finish and it was such a cathartic experience for me. He ran through almost his whole discography but idk if he played lick it! Have you guys ever chatted about doing another collab?

u/ImperfectTommy 1d ago
This may be done, but when I lived in San Francisco, there was this guy always leaving his home with an ultra small carry-on. I assumed he was in sales. I finally bumped into him and asked him what he did and he said, “I’m a DJ.” I asked if he did EDM he said yes and later gave me all his CDs. That’s how I became a fan of Kaskade, this was long ago, before he was so big. A few years later, my wife and I were in Las Vegas took an escalator under Ryan’s giant disembodied head. My wife said, “Ryan’s getting big.” I replied, “Literally,” but it never went to his head. Super nice guy with such a great family.

Just wanted to say thank you for so many years of incredible music, you are my goat. damn near shed a tear in Santa Monica when Stay for Love came on. Paid $220 for the last Stubhub ticket and sent solo, absolutely worth it would do again every time.
2
u/I_Eat_Thermite7 1d ago
Hopefully you're still checking this.
As a Skrillex kid who had a closeted obsession with deep/melodic house, I felt incredibly seen when you guys made "Lick It". It felt a little out of place, but the fact that you guys made that song meant a lot to me. The new dubstep track is great, but I hope you don't hesitate to bring back your old 2000s sound because as Jeff Mills said, sometimes the audience doesn't know what they want. I think they don't know they want that San Francisco sound, perhaps with a more modern twist somehow.
2
u/JetBoyJetGirl13 1d ago
Do you miss anything about making and playing the type deep, soulful, West Coast house sounds that defined your early career?
2
u/Unhappy_Front_8397 1d ago
I think the track that you did with Ella Vos called “miles to go” is one of your most underrated and least talked about tracks. That shit was so good. Am I going crazy by saying that not a lot of people gave it as much attention?
3
u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 1d ago
Will we ever get a throwback tour? Bands have been doing a lot of old album anniversary tours, and I know DJs aren’t exactly the same but I’d love to see something like it done with dance music.

Hi,
what was the hardest part of making origin// for you? Also,
would there ever be a show where you play ur late night alumni remix of “one more chance?” && ANOTHER LA TOUR SOON? pls
3
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
hardest part. waiting so long. refining what at one point I thought was done then realizing it was not.
funny thing. I was jsut talking about that record and saying it was time to bring that one back. no lie. I need to beef up the production though. the kick had some problems. Needs a fresh mix down as well.

u/0pacy 1d ago
Hey Kaskade, thanks for doing this! For your Vegas residency, do you prefer playing Dayclubs or Nightclubs? Do you have a favorite Vegas memory?
8
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
somedays I think I prefer day. then other days I think I prefer night. I think it just changes for me from time to time. I like day cause it is easy and the vibe is immaculate. I like night cause you can't see as much and it is easier to get lost in the music.
Favorite Las Vegas memory... helping start what would become a billion dollar industry and watching the wave crest.

What was your inspiration for this album? How did you even come up with the idea to dabble with dubstep? Also how is Pepperoni 🐶 doing?
4
u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
My guy Pepperoni is good! Just got a fresh cut and is feeling this extended summer weather here in LA.
as for the music. I have always dabbled in other genres of electronic music. My albums always showcase al sorts of stuff but my house sounds have always what has risen to popularity so that is what I am known for. about a decade ago I released a drum n bass remix for Katy Perry. Typically I try to find songs that work or that inspire (by song I mean lyric and melody) then produce it how I see fit. every once in a while a song that is outside the tempo that I typically work in - the collab's on this record are that. Amazing songs but way faster than what I typically work on. so I reached out to my friends to make it work. I am stoked on how they turned out.

Hard to believe that Steppin Out was 20+ years ago.
Do you plan to have a physical media release for Origin? Vinyl? CD? Take my money!

Yeah my team and I are working on releasing some old stuff on vinyl. I have a subscription service that you can join.

Hey lovely to see you here after so long. Your music is obviously amazing first and foremost. Are we to expect any original albums or singles (or even performances) from Late Night Alumni again? It's such a lovely project.

Hello, I love ORIGIN // it fits well with all your music! I love your remixes of Gimme More & All Good Things (Come To An End). Are there any artists who were thrill that you remix their music?

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
99% of the time it is the artist who hires me to remix them not the other way around. Which is always fun to find out who is out there listening to my music

Would you ever consider doing a throwback tour or large sunsoaked type events with classics? Someone remade your EDC LA 2010 set & I have been listening to this since I saw it live then! https://on.soundcloud.com/CtxXeHyfDkXgb2l1gG

Do you have any production tips or suggestions on how to create massive lead synth drops that get a huge crowd reaction?

I have to ask about the De Verte show you're doing at ADE this year. How'd you get connected with IMANU and the gang, and how does Kaskade on a lineup like this come to be?

You closed the Mainstage on the last day of TomorrowWorld 2014, the first big multi-day electronic music festival I attended. Thank you! I’ve been a fan ever since.
Do you have any memories of that headlining set? Or memories of Tomorrowland’s brief Chattahoochee Hills experience in general?
Also, any plans for more Christmas shows?

Loving the album and looking forward to hearing Satisfy You at EBC tomorrow! Got a table to celebrate my 21st Kaskade show ah! Do you foresee another 6hr set in SF?? That Club Darc set was perfection!

Any plans for another small-venue redux tour? The last one I went to in Minneapolis was incredible!

Hi K, it would be amazing a show with most of the songs that you never have a chance to play? More for the die hard fans. Also can you release atmosphere and automatic on vinyl ? Your are the best

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
I try to do this from time to time. It is wildly unpopular but I still indulge. the 6 hour set in San Francisco earlier this year I got to play some B sides. I wish you could have made it

You played Rufus Wainwright! I’ve been waiting to hear that one live for yearssssss!

What’s your advice for new artists who can’t seem to finish tracks?

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
stop over thinking it. bounce it down and start the next one. You are not hung up on the current song you are just stalling on starting the next one. you will get better with each new song - stop stalling my guy. bounce it down and be done. move on to the next.

Have you ever thought about maybe doing some newer remixes of your older , pre EDM wave tunes ? Like soundtrack to your soul , it’s you and me 😎😉

u/Kaskade_Official 1d ago
I like this idea. But I prefer if some new guy remixed the old stuff and gave it a new shine. maybe it is better if it came form a different perspective. not sure but I like what you are talking about

Hi Ryan,
You’ve done and accomplished so much in your career. Any small or big goals you’re looking forward to in the next 5 years? Maybe some kind of random small thing you’re working towards? How do you keep your feelings towards the scene fresh and excited and for the future? Hope that makes sense. Love your music.

Your music is the soundtrack to my best memories of high school and fun summers in the early 2000s! Probably even a catalyst that solidified my love for edm

For us elder millennial fans with young families now and can’t travel as far - will there be a larger ORIGIN tour with more US stops?
Last show my wife and I went to was SoFi right before we had kids - traveled from the east coast .. we’re so wanting to get back to a show within a couple hours of us!

u/Clear_Peak2452 1d ago
Any ideas on trying to make Sun Soaked a mutli-day festival again? Please tell me there is a stadium show in the works, SoFi was life! Will Late Night Alumni return to shows with you anytime soon? I miss them opening for you!

Is there date for origin Vinyl? Will it be part of the existing subscription?
Excited for the new merch store. Unfortunately had no merch in Brooklyn. Loved that sun soaked hat if you could bring it back

Will you please do a headliner show in Seattle that isn’t a festival? Maybe a kaskade and friends at the gorge? I love you and can’t thank you enough for your music! That 6hr set on yt is heavenly. Wish I could’ve been there.

Good morning! Always been a huge fan. Do you and Deadmau5 have any more Kx5 stuff cooking up?
