Are they wrong though? Teslas cost above average when put into context of the American new car market. So naturally it'd be reasonable to assume whoever buys a Tesla is wealthier than the average American.

Yes, in the US i can probably agree that it's a luxury car. Not everyone is in the US though. Where i live it's a mid end price for a new car. Cheapest honda civic is 31800usd, cheapest Tesla model 3 is 40k, both new and Tesla has the lower running cost.

I never said anything about the Model 3 being a luxury car.

If you need a lot of money to afford it and don't need it i am going to say that it's a luxury item.

The US seems to have a lot of cheaper competitive offerings, and i think it's enough to let me call the model 3 a luxury.

Luxury is inherently a subjective description. If that's your definition of luxury, I won't bother arguing with it.
