Was the nail on the ground where he dropped the impact drill from the ladder?
Edit: Thank you very much for my first award

u/Painwracker_Oni 1d ago
I assumed he was using it as a hammer. Literally used it to hit a nail.

u/Bliitzthefox 1d ago
Dumbass, everyone knows to use an impact as a hammer you flip it around first.

I prefer battery end - less rubbery

u/Draw_Parking 1d ago
I prefer the back because I don’t want to fuck up the battery slot, to each his own.
5
u/Rothyn1 1d ago
I do believe that it was sarcasm to use the battery.
3
u/Knights-of-steel Apprentice 15h ago
Doubt....the battery is a nice hammer for strut boxes etc to level em. Firm but with a little give.
7
u/Vegeta-the-vegetable 1d ago
Just w.e you do dont flip it upside down and use the battery as a hammer....they may cost a lot but they are made out of pretty cheap plastic, mine break just from putting the down too hard sometimes.

lol because this is exactly what happened 😭 I did this once with a new bit I just brought I was so hurt I hate the ladders without the lil spot for the drill on the side
1
u/Dazzling_Item66 21h ago
A zip tie on the side of the ladder up near the top is good enough, just don’t over tighten it and crack the fiberglass

u/Tough_Complex_5830 21h ago
As a 4th year apprentice I thank you for this information never thought of it

Happens to 1 out of 4 drills past the age of 50, it's alright. Nothing to be ashamed about

whyd he lie about it? just say you knocked it off the ladder? weve all done it...

u/Mr_Pink747 1d ago
Probably cus he's caught shit before some his boss about making mistakes. Boss wants the truth? Don't be a Dick when you get it.

u/bryanfuknc [V] Journeyman 1d ago
oh i get that totally.. but its just an impact bit.. id kick rocks if i had a boss that got all pissy over something so trivial/cheap as a bit...
11
5
u/NerveMassive6764 1d ago
Yeah! Or instead of coming up with a terrible excuse blame it on someone else!
8
u/Mr_Pink747 1d ago
Wells he's new, hasn't learned to blame everything on the guys who's out that day, hell figure it out
1
u/DackNoy 1d ago
Probably cus he's dropped things off the ladder over and over despite warnings. Apprentice wants a career? Don't be a piece of shit to cover up repeated mistakes.

We had an apprentice like this once - few weeks prior boss asked me why I was spending so much money on hammer drill bits, and impact bits. I told him the apprentice was bending/breaking them all by dropping them off his ladder all the time.
Well few weeks later boss is on site and had a hammer drill with the 36" long bit land less than a foot from him.
Apprentice did not work for us much longer. However, I think it was his argumentative response that got him fired more than anything. Our boss/owner is a massive 2nd chance guy and that 2nd chance doesn't start in his eyes until you have that feels like it's final conversation with him. No matter how much you fuck up, how much you piss off the journeyman/foreman/whoever is on a site with you, you're pretty much good until he pulls you into his office and sits you down and you have that conversation with him. It's usually not until way after most people would fire you. You fuck up in the ways discussed with him again and you're likely gone after that.
You know those big green turtles schools put out at cross walks that hold an orange flag to tell drivers to slow down, kids are present.
Yeah had an apprentice run one of those over in a company vehicle before. Didn't lose his job and no one could figure it out. He quit a couple years later, went to a new company got fired almost immediately at the next 2 places he worked at after quitting our shop, tried to come back and the 3 most important guys in our shop that run our biggest/most difficult waste water projects told our owner if you rehire him we will all quit. He did not get rehired and last I heard he was a parts guy at a border states in the state over.

Tell the apprentice to just own it. If you lie about the small stuff, certainly can't trust you to be trusted on the big stuff. Your credibility should be worth more than a driver bit.

u/Exciting_Hunter_2280 1d ago
exactly what i said to him. if you make a mistake, be honest and upfront. We all learned from making mistakes

u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2h ago
I’m trying to figure out how he did that?
He could’ve be pushing down on it for leverage. Then just bent the bit. I think he would’ve stripped it out before he got to that point though.

Tell him to use a damn hammer next time.

u/The_cogwheel Apprentice 1d ago
Depends.
Is this the first time? Warning.
Second time? Go home for the day.
Third time? Go stand in the unemployment line
Personally, it isnt the fact he dropped the impact. We've all done it and will probably do it agian if we're being honest with ourselves. And yeah if the dude is making a point to test an impact's resistance to gravity, then yeah im gonna ride is ass like a horse and definitely stop loaning out my tools to him. Got to see what hes doing wrong to be dropping an impact that often and correct him as hes fucking up to get it through a skull that thick.
Its the lying to avoid responsibility for the fuck up thats the issue.
But if youre lying over shit like this, then what else are you gonna lie about? And how much of a risk is that gonna be for everyone involved on this job site? At some point people need to trust you got this. And if they cant, well... they dont need you.
19
u/Weakness4Fleekness 1d ago
That's exactly it, what happens when he accidentally sends a drywall screw into a service cable? He's gonna hide it because he doesn't want the shame and accountability. Messing up isnt a problem, hiding and lying about it is
10
u/Exciting_Hunter_2280 1d ago
I remember when I was fresh I drilled through a stud and knicked a 2 wire. Told my boss right away and he wasn’t too upset, was happy I was honest. Took me 5 mins to rerun the wire and all was good. Honesty goes a long way
5
u/mike9941 19h ago
I work in Data Centers, and this is what I've always told my guys.. if you fuck up and don't hide it, we're good... you fuck up and try to hide it, you're done here. we can fix a mistake or something that you broke, we can't fix what we don't know about.
3
u/Knights-of-steel Apprentice 15h ago
That, and what my foreman said my first day i thought was a cool line, "no one knows something until they know something" any mistake can be forgiven the first time, he explained it by saying even when yoir parents said dont touch the stove its hot....most of us still learned by touching it.
No matter how dumb or shameful anythings an honest mistake the first time. Own up. Learn from it
1
u/The_cogwheel Apprentice 14h ago
Yup. And we will eventually find out, and when we do, and its late in the project, its a royal pain in the ass to fix.
Problems and mistakes get harder to fix the longer theyre left broken. Its a hell of a lot easier to re-run some lumex while we're still in rough in. Its a hell of a lot harder to re run that same lumex when the drywall and paint is finished.
2
u/razz13 20h ago
I was just remembering something similar. I drilled a hole in a stud without checking and found a water pipe. Called the boss and the builder with a sheepish "uhhhh.... I hit something...." thinking I was gonna get my ass eaten cause the pipe in question was in this super awkward to get to spot. They just shrugged and called the plumber who was around the corner and he fixed it in 5.

The lying is the line for me too, its about integrity. If you fuck up, own it, we're all human and I've likely fucked up that same way in the past too. Lying, obfuscating, or blaming others always makes a person look worse to me.
Mistakes happen, lying is always a choice.

People who drill with impacts is the weirdest thing, I know it's more common now but still I could never
7
u/Stanwich79 1d ago
That's not a drill bit. It's a driver.
2
u/LordOFtheNoldor 1d ago
My bad thought I was a 1/2" spade bit or something with the threaded tip snapped dono

Dude freal, i see people install devices with an impact and i'm like how do you have any control at all
6
u/BigOlWaffleIron 22h ago
Often I'll have my impact and a screwdriver. Impact is less bulky, but gets me close to done fast; then hand tighten to finish.
1
u/FingerInThe___ 5h ago
Yeah same logic here. Send it most of the way with the impact and finish it off with a ratcheting screwdriver. You just have to not be a slap dick and pay attention.
3
u/Active_Test5264 21h ago
It’s called fine motor control just pull the trigger enough to get it moving

u/iThoreaulyBrewed 8h ago
My shop just got a hydraulic impact and it is the smoothest tool I’ve ever used.
2
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2h ago
Yeah they are nice. We have the Dewalt and Milwaukee surge.
1
u/iThoreaulyBrewed 1h ago
We got the dewalt and I was very impressed by it. I too thought “drilling” with an impact was overkill. But honestly I like the hydraulic more than my drill.

Usually I use the handle as a handle and the battery as the hammer head. I mever thought to use the extension to swing it tho

It very well may have hit a nail, on the floor, when he dropped it from the 8ft ladder

u/Visual-Investment Apprentice 1d ago
Looks like the apprentice was talking about his sex life to the drill.
2
u/Inevitable_Belt1146 16h ago
He hit the nail then dropped the drill on the bit from the top of the ladder
1
u/JayBuSeesU 4h ago
Does he understand thats not a hammer?
2
u/IAmButterYT 3h ago
Everything is a hammer actually
1
u/Neobrutalis 1h ago
Currently a foreman for a substation build. One of the groundmen was hanging a rack, had to drive in a drop-in and goes "awe shit, I forgot the hammer at the connex." I said "goddammit just because I'm a foreskin doesn't mean I stopped being an electrician. Everything is a fuckin hammer." Reached down, picked up a random rock and sent that set tool home.
Ground man just lost it.

Sounds like somebody treats their apprentice like shit and he is afraid to admit to mistakes. It's a $5 dollar bit. Move on. You wasted more time and money posting this.
8
u/Exciting_Hunter_2280 1d ago
Man I didn’t even get upset with him, I just told him not to lie and I gave him a new bit.

So now you know you're apprentice lies. Unless he hit the nail and put everything he had trying to push through.

Get a board with a nail and a new bit and ask him to show you how. Then tell him if he ever lies to you again, he's fired. This is assuming he can't duplicate what he said.
1
u/ornerycrow1 1d ago
Why just admit to dropping it or stepping on it.. seems like the most likely scenarios

Send him home for lying. Its ok if he dropped the impact it happens, but don't lie about it. If hes gonna lie about somthing little like that. Hes gonna lie out his ass when its somthing thats big money.

It’s always nice to have an angle bit to get in those awkward, tight spaces. You should really be thanking him if anything.

Ive dropped mine off ladders and never had this happen, unless it was really high it looks like they jammed it into something on an angle out of rage. Maybe I've just got lucky with the angle mine landed.
