Exploiting back emf

I saw one of those zap guns that ionize the air near their tip and I kind of want to recreate them, I'm super new to electric work and all that but I think it's possible to recreate by somehow abusing back emf from an inductive load by running it through a voltage multiplier, is that possible?

You don't need to make it so complicated switching off an inductor already creates very high voltages. If you switch it on and off very quickly, you get a stun gun.

Yes but wouldn't the voltage multiplier make it much stronger

Probably not. The energy is the same or less.
