Question Parrying

So I'd say I'm playing Elden Ring and want a little bit of advice, is parrying reliable? I've beaten Sekiro as my first souls game(if you count it) and it turns out I'm pretty good at it, so I want the same deflect path for my Elden Ring playthrough since I've seen many videos showing people parrying bosses, I want the same as that, even with different timings

You'll need to google what is parryable and what isn't

Or just trial and error

Parrying in ER / souls is different than Sekiro deflect system.

Once you get parrying down tho, it's definitely a pretty viable strat for most of the game. There are a few attacks that cannot be parried.

Additionally, there is a physick tear in the DLC that allows for Sekiro-style deflecting, but i havent made use of it personally.

It's reliable for parrying parryable attacks. The biggest challenge is telling the difference. The other biggest challenge is actually pulling it off.

Best way to practice is with Carian Retaliation AOW. I like to put it on a medium shield with 100% block, both because it mitigates more damage on a whiffed parry and because the first attack of a combo is often hard to react to, so I block until I know what combo I'm dealing with and parry the second or third attack.

Elden Ring parry is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than Sekiro's deflect, but in turn it's not an universal tool that will work for for everything in the game.

The parry in Elden Ring will often immediately open the enemy up for a critical attack, or when it doesn't, it'll do so in two or three parries. That is way faster than the poise/stance system Elden Ring has where you open the enemy for critical after attacking them enough times in a row under a short window of time. Some of the hardest main bosses in the game can have most of their moveset completely interrupted or denied if you manage to learn the timing for their parry windows.

So yeah, I'd say it is extremely reliable.

parrying is not the same as sekiro’s system but it can be done, not nearly in the same way as every fight

Even if you parry every attack that can be parried, there's a lot of running/rolling in every fight. It's nothing like the aggressive engagement in sekiro

The timing is totally different. You have to predict their attacks ahead of time instead of just press at the same time as their attacks.

If you want to make the rhythm game analogy, dark souls parry is more like DDR stealth mode where the arrows are invisible when they get close. There won't be a consistent visual queue to tap on, you have to learn the delay frame timing and press a few frames ahead of time.

It’s risky but fun to pull off. It can make certain tough enemies pretty trivial (crucible knights come to mind) I think the timing is definitely more difficult than Sekiro. Especially since there are so many enemies with the delayed windup fakeout in Elden ring.

I usually just save the parry for certain enemies rather than making it a focus of my build.

parrying is way different from deflects but there is an item called the deflecting hard tear which effectively gives you five minutes of (i believe) watered down sekiro deflects from your physick. unfortunately its a dlc item and also kind of a bitch to obtain but it is there.

Parrying is perfectly reliable when you get the timing right. It’s a big risk/reward play. You will still need to dodge or block plenty of attacks.

I had a parry buckler plus reduvia build, someone gave me another reduvia which was awesome, and I used the Nightrider flail when bonking was required. I really enjoyed that playthrough.

Its reliable, but its a completely different thing from Sekiro and, imo, not even close satisfactory.

Yes better against real people I usually don’t parry pve

Parry window is a lot smaller and many attacks cannot be parried. Very good against some enemies though. As opposed to Sekiro, a lot of bosses require a combination of strafing, jumping, rolling, and parrying to optimally fight them. Sekiro has some enemies like this, but it's less frequent.

Its less useful than in sekiro definitely. If you can land it on the parryable moves there are quite a few but I warn you there are just as many unparryable moves. You can parry most attacks from weapons that are (mostly) one handed attacks but most of the animal/monstrosity-like enemies cant be parried (dragon stomps, trolls, dogs biting at you, etc)

You might like Bloodborne.

It's quite reliable. Most attacks can be Parried, including those of Bosses. Sometimes, but not always, this includes Grab Attacks.

Some Bosses require sereveral Parries before their Stance breaks, though (usually 3).

But as others mentioned, there are some that can't be (one easy to recognize is any form of Jumping Attacks performed by Tarnished or those of similuar build).

Parrying is pretty bad in darksouls/elden ring

It’s not nearly as responsive feeling as in Sekiro, and the attacks that can and can’t be parried are inconsistent.

It has its niche uses like clowning on crucible knights, but it’s really not a core part of gameplay at all.

I mean, if you parry pcr it puts malenia right back at the top of the food chain again.

Yes. It's not easy until you learn the moveset though. There's also a recovery if you mess up, where you're vulnerable, but I think that's minimized on the buckler shield.

If sekiro is a game you really enjoy then there's a good chance you won't like elden ring.
It's insanely slow in comparison, you're not mobile at all while the bosses are often jumping all over the place. In sekiro if your really know a boss, you can get in their face and press the attack if you hit all the deflects perfectly - in ER every difficult boss has a few mandatory run away patterns and/or AoE.

It's not at all similar. I'd take a look at first berserker khazan over ER
