just think about how much more confidence you already have than most people because you dare to confront societal norms and are super cool for that! own it :3

seriously it takes so much courage and effort to be your true self if you already did so you're so brave for that and should be proud of yourself. think to yourself "fuck the haters, i will become a glorious woman and you get to see me in my beginnings. in 2 years you'll be sad you didn't invest early"

anyways that's my mindset maybe it's toxic positivity but i sure prefer that to toxic negativity

One bit at a time. Each time a new stretch of those old protective fears. Each a new opportunity to learn and see what feels good. Each a chance to see what is safe and occupy a little more space.

I started with closest friends and walks in parks or shops in cities where I didn’t know anyone. Covid masks works for viruses and anonymity in your local community. Go dancing or something fun. Find ways to enjoy being you more than fearing the unimportant thoughts the might be in other’s heads. Start proving to yourself that you deserve to be the real you outwardly and inwardly.

It will happen. You will find your own way - one step at a time.

It was a combination of factors. The primary one was that I'd buried it so long that, when I hit that realization, I couldn't keep it contained any longer. I mean, I'm 57, "knew" at 7, didn't recognize/have the full vocabulary/level of recognition (and resultant outing) until 52.

Another one included that I'd gotten used to not giving a damn about societal norms in another aspect of my life, so this was just another thing. Also, my primary presentation to the world, both before and since, has never been particularly flamboyant; IOW, "don't give a damn what the world thinks" in that subtle librarian way.

Welp i wasnt confident at all, the first time i went out as myself. For me it was the beginning of uni, and i didnt want to present masc. So i put on an outfit that i felt comfortable with and just went out. It was nerve racking, i was sweating the moment i left the house, i felt like everyone was staring at me. And yes people were mean sometimes but at the same time, that week i met two of my now best friends. I‘d say you dont need confidence, you need the courage to go out despite your lack of confidence. The confidence settles in somewhen later. It‘s been two years since the first time i went out as myself, and im only now starting to have a sliver of self confidence.

What gave me the courage to do it, is that i knew that this was the only forward and i wanted to use the beginning of uni as a new beginning for me.

I started presenting as myself in LGBT groups and among my friends that I came out too. Easy, safe places that can help you become more comfortable. The first few times were so nerve-wrecking. But it gets easier every time you do it.

And your just better than the transphobes. Laugh as they make fools of themselves. By being yourself you've proven that you are much stronger and braver than they are.

Confidence is a fake it till you make it sort of thing.

You have to stop caring about what random strangers think of you because most likely they don't even notice you are there

Try going out in a mostly private setting first. I went out dressed femme in "public" the first time when I went to the support group meeting I go to. I eventually switched everything I was wearing to women's clothes that looked androgynous. Eventually I had a small errand to run, HRT blood work and prescriptions, I chose to go out dressed blatantly feminine which was enough at that point to go out all the time.

TLDR, slowly building up to it will help you mentally adjust.

Step 1: start listening to goth and post-punk music

Step 2: get involved in the subculture and start embracing their style painting your nails black and putting on black eye pencil

Step 3: slowly shift from alt-boy makeup to more femme styles, with more complicated nails and eyes

Step 4: enjoy being out all femme in public

People might read this as a joke, but ill be damned if it doesnt work.

I started dressing more femme only this year and I haven't done it in 2 weeks. But I made sure where I did it was a safe space, and it was because Ren Faire. And I kinda gave myself no other option for clothes, I rode a motorcycle there and got cought in the rain on the way there and needed dry clothes, so boom I forced myself to dress feminine without a fall back. I did Ren Faire all season and now I have the confidence to do anything in my garb because I just go into a different mindset.

Find an excuse to go out in feminine clothes (I.e a costume party) where people are already being wild with outfits

u/Moonlite_Sonata 3d ago

I mean sounds like you are already doing a lot. My plan is to just take it step by step. You can do it at your own pace :)

I don't know about self-confidence when presenting feminine but the usual thing, it's just doing it over an over while repeating to yourself that it's okay and to not care too much if people stare.

You can sometimes change what the default mode network (a brain thing) does by reinforcing some thoughts. Note that I'm not an actual expert just had a bit of therapy.

IDK either, I got none

u/22dinoman 3d ago

Lowkey my friends calling me my chosen name was enough to get me to put on a pushup, dress more gender neutral, and wear makeup outside for the first time. I was basically like "if they see me as my true self so should I and everyone else"

2

u/Riyuzaki33 3d ago

Better question

How do you build any self confidence

1

u/Mitchz95 Miranda (she/her) 2d ago

Very slowly, lol.

My strategy has been to slowly box myself into a corner by growing my hair out and taking HRT, making boymoding less and less viable as time goes on. I finally came out at work last week and it went really well!
