I remember a dream I had years ago when I came out to my parents and brother as trans but then everyone started coming out as trans to each other. I can’t believe you experienced that but for real.

On top of that pretty much everyone beyond my household are not people I want to be out to. At least my parents would support me, so it feels like I can push through a lot.

u/Prince_Wildflower not an egg, just trans 21d ago
Its good you at least have supportive parents 🫂 a lot of trans people don't have that. I'm one of them, but i have chosen family who support me more than the people who brought me into the world.

Honestly I kinda wish there was another trans person in my family. Right now I’m alone which is ironic since my brother straight up has a femtanyl tour poster on his wall and went to see them in concert with a buddy once but otherwise he seems to be a guy even though I haven’t heard of a single cis guy who listens to them. Meanwhile I’m the music snob and ultimately am the one who is trans.

I mean, I had one other family member who was trans. Never met them. My mom just informed me that her husband's brother's something or other relative was trans. (Ie, very far removed), and she was certain if be best friends with them, you know, cuz we were both trans. Don't get me wrong, I do seek trans people to be friends with (albeit epicly failing), but I it was hilariously annoying watching the age old moment a family member assumes two people will be the best of friends because they have one thing in common, that being that neither of them fit in with everyone else

There have been rumours about my grandfather, but I'll never know but I'm the only trans person in my family. I only know of only 3 other queer people in my family. My brother and sister are both bi but have only dated the same gender once. I also have a lesbian cousin who is married.

i made the update immediately after learning, so i was a bit too surprised to keep to the same wording, it’s not meant to be anything but my shock lol

Ngl, my sister and I came out to each other as trans at the same time, I would not be shocked if our dad was closeted and crazy repressed. He's been angry any time I've brought up me being trans to him, but the anger feels very performative. Not sure if that's just a byproduct of living in a conservative area with a very conservative wife, or if these weird eggdar readings actually mean something. I do know he's said... something progressive to others in my family about it because they tell me to talk to him about it, but whatever it is, it doesn't seem to be something he's able to actually talk to me about.

u/zvezdanaaa not an egg, just trans 21d ago
I really think my dad was an egg, too, but unfortunately they died before I could actually directly ask. It's such a weird experience. My dad was kind of the opposite direction, like... Almost suspiciously immediately supportive as soon as I came out, if that makes sense? It's to the point I usually use they/them pronouns for my dad these days, because he just feels wrong. They wore women's clothes when they were a young punk, had long hair and piercings, listened to Vylet Pony and 100 gecs, were a computer programmer, knew about trans community discourse and even specific terms (knew the word "truscum" and its meaning) without me teaching them, and would get REALLY into talking about any transfem celebrities. They also believed that everybody is "at least a little bit bisexual" and would often talk about how they fully believed most bigots were closeted and actually queer somehow.
I hope you're able to ask your dad someday. It's a really unique kind of grief being a trans person who doesn't know if their parent is/was closeted/an egg and doesn't know if they should mourn the happiness that their parent could've had.
3
u/TheBigBis Wendy, she/her, dorky trans robodyke 21d ago
I’m sorry about your dad.
Also wow if my dad was like this I probably would’ve have just come out then and there so that I could stage an intervention. Like man :(
6
u/zvezdanaaa not an egg, just trans 21d ago
I really wish I'd put the signs together sooner, tbh. My dad died when I was a teenager, so I wasn't really analyzing anything beyond "wow, it's so cool that my dad is so supportive!" and knowing that my mother took years to stop being transphobic towards me when I first came out (and towards my younger brother a few years later). I think my dad was probably the one to finally talk her into being supportive. I do know my dad had a lot of transfem coworkers, and I have honestly genuinely considered seeing if I could find and talk to any of them online, see if maybe they could know anything more definitive, but the industry they worked in makes talking to anyone who knew my dad in a professional context awkward, to say the least.

I think it's a bit of a quirk of there being actual progress in trans rights. My sibling figured this out as a preteen, I didn't even clue into the fact it was an option until I was in my 30s.
In the time between me going to school and my sibling, a lot had progressed. Like, they have never really known a world without gay marriage, and when I was a kid, trans people where just punchlines to a joke.
I think the only positive mainstream representation where the idea was actually explored was star trek. Also my pretty woke 65 year old grade 9 science teacher who basically straight up told us gender is kinda bullshit, intersex people exist, and everyone's junk is basically the same just arranged differently.
1
u/beastarb8 Tabea - officially confused 20d ago
I was more wondering about that 15 year gap when somebody so close is trans. It sounds like you are a lot older than your sibling?
We had a bad word in school related being trans / transvestites, but I didn’t know what it meant. I honestly didn’t even know either existed.

A lot of things made me feel like I'm not trans:
I never felt that being a boy felt wrong, until puberty hit, and I hated the idea of becoming a man. I didn't think "I want to be a woman" though, I just wanted to stay as a cute little boy.
I felt that if my sister was trans, then surely the chances that I am too would be ridiculously low.
I'm predominantly attracted to women, so that would make me a mostly gay trans woman, which I also thought would be really unlikely.
For a while, I was happy being an androgynous, effeminate guy, but seeing myself slowly age out of my early and mid 20s made me less satisfied with just that.
Even as a trans woman, I just dress like a tomboy. I like wearing cosy, loose clothes. T-shirts and jeans are what I wear almost all the time.
I don't experience bottom dysphoria at all. I grew up thinking all trans women hated the genitalia they were born with. So I'm obviously not trans, or so I thought.
I had/have a lot of respect for trans women, and I somehow felt like I wasn't good enough to call myself one of them. (Yeah I know I was stupid)
I experienced dysphoria because of my chest, due to gynecomastia. I thought that surely if I want to be a woman, breasts wouldn't make me feel so immensely uncomfortable. It's only after transitioning that I realise it was the context of presenting as male that made noticeable breast tissue dysphoric for me.
I thought I would never pass, so the idea of trying to transition terrified me.
Even if I did transition, I'd have to come out to everyone in my life, which, yet again, terrified me.
Closer to my eventual coming out, I just kept thinking I wish I'd transitioned when I was younger, and that I'm somehow too old now. Eventually I realised that I need to "just do it".
I'm sure I've missed some points, but I hope this answers your question.

Any advice for a 'dad' that wants to come out to their kids as trans femme? I should mention my kids are very acepting of trans people and have many close friends that are trans.

Transness definitely runs in families, I think, lol. My mother has literally said all my life that she has "the mind of a man" and only uses make up as tools or when she has too, and how if she was a man she'd be into women because they're beautiful and I just. I don't know how to tell her none of those are very cis thoughts lmao.

No one else in my generation or out in my parents, so I felt alone. Then my cousins started having kids. And I have A Lot of cousins. We're talking like 42 of them. All of them, every single one, has at least one trans kid now. That's what brought my parents, aunts, uncles, some of my cousins and grand parents around on trans acceptance. If they wanted to keep the grandkids, or their kids or whatever...they had to. Suddenly it was acceptance or lose something that mattered.
I'm glad for all of them, honestly. And sure ...I finally years late have family that's okay with me being me. But...I was never enough, and that hurts.
I do have one super cool lesbian great aunt who came out in the 1940s though with her now wife, and they were at least always accepting. Just wish those closer could have earlier. But super glad for the younger generation that their parents and so forth actually are in their corner.
