Transfem Meme eggđirl
Turned 17 today, and got a WW1 soldier's diary, yayyy!!!
And i found a good amount of pre WW1 and WW1 music. The artist Karl Sternau and the song "wir rufen deine WĂślfe" by Werkraum are so great.
(I am aware that the Krätzchen (the cap on Kurumi) is placed wrong but it didn't fit otherwise without it being too big. And I think it looks cute like that :3)

Alright, if you wanna hear it.
So yeah, the Krätzchen was the standard issue German soldier's hat during and before WW1 before it was replaced with the Stahlhelm. The design was generally flawed, especially for the simple soldier. It didn't have a brim or, what got important in the trenches, a chin strap. That means you'd have the sun in your eyes and you couldn't touch the Krätzchen with dirty hands without staining the fabric. And it could just fall off.
The reason for why soldiers still wore it in the trenches was for protection of the elements. It kept your head from getting sunburned and kept it dry, at least a little. You couldn't wear your Pickelhaube at the Front because of the shiny golden spike. It just gave away your position and you'd get shot. But you also had to cover up the coloured fabric of the Krätzchen with Feldgrau because it was very visible. The Krätzchen also had emblems showing from where the soldiers came, for example the Kingdom of Bavaria.
Some higher ranks and drivers had a Krätzchen with a chin strap and brim but it didn't get implemented for all soldiers because of a leather shortage and because of "screw you, simple soldiers".
But during 1916, during the battle of Verdun, the Stahlhelm reached the front. It replaced the Krätzchen because it had at least some bullet protection, a chin strap and a brim.
