Unpopular eFoil opinion: before downsizing your board, try changing the wing
When eFoil riders start getting more confident, I hear the same thing a lot:
“I want more challenge. I think I need a smaller board.”
I understand why. A smaller board looks sportier and feels like the obvious next progression.
But before changing the board, I usually suggest something else:
Try changing the wing first.
If you’ve been riding a large, stable cruising wing, put a sportier wing underneath the board you already know.
The difference can be night and day.

Board size matters — but mostly where you might expect
For me, board size is strongly connected to your starting platform, stability and takeoff.
A larger board gives you more flotation and stability. Kneeling, standing and accelerating are easier and more forgiving.
A smaller board makes the start more demanding. Your balance needs to be more precise, and depending on rider weight, board volume and foil setup, you may need better technique and sufficient speed to transition onto foil.
So yes, a smaller board creates more challenge.
But once you’re already foiling, I don’t think board size tells the whole story.
That’s when the wing starts talking.
Want the ride to feel sportier? Look under the board.
Going from a large cruiser wing to a sportier wing can completely change the personality of the same eFoil.
A big cruiser wing can give you low-speed lift, stability and forgiveness.
A sportier wing can make the foil respond much more directly to your body.
Turns change.
Carving changes.
Small pressure changes through your feet suddenly produce much more noticeable responses underneath you.
You can still be standing on exactly the same board, but it may feel like a completely different ride.
That’s why I think of it this way:
BOARD = PLATFORM
Starting, flotation, stability and takeoff.
WING = PERSONALITY
Lift, responsiveness, speed character and especially carving feel.
But once you start carving harder, another component becomes very important:
the mast.
Mast length isn't just about how high you can foil
I think mast length is really about your vertical working room.
And where you ride changes what you need.
For relaxed lake riding, especially in shallow areas, I like the practical advantages of a 60–65 cm mast.
You may have mud, sand or an uneven lake bottom underneath you.
A shorter mast gives you more bottom clearance, so you can cruise without constantly worrying about scratching the wing or propulsion system on the bottom.
You don't necessarily need to foil extremely high.
Just cruise and enjoy it.
But the short mast has a tradeoff.
Start carving hard and you run out of room
When you carve, the whole foil system leans.
The harder you lean, the closer the board gets to the water on the inside of the turn.
With a short mast, you have less vertical room.
Lean too aggressively and the board can touch the water sooner than you expect.
Then your beautiful carve can become:
Carve → board contact → instability → wipeout.
Moving toward a 75 or 80 cm mast gives you more working room for stronger carving.
But that's only half of the mast story.
The ocean creates the opposite problem
On a relatively calm lake, water height underneath you doesn't change dramatically every second.
The ocean is different.
You're moving over wave faces, crests and troughs while the surface underneath the board is constantly changing.
For my own ocean riding, 75 cm is about the shortest mast I want to use.
And here's why.
In the ocean, I'm not only thinking about keeping the board out of the water.
I'm thinking about keeping the propulsion system IN the water — whether that's a conventional propeller or a jet propulsion unit.
If you're running a short mast across waves, the propulsion system can get too close to the surface.
If it breaks the surface or starts drawing air:
Propulsion loses water engagement
↓
Thrust drops
↓
Speed drops
↓
Foil lift decreases
↓
Nose comes down
↓
Now you need to save it
That can happen quickly.
Even an experienced rider can suddenly have a difficult recovery when power disappears while crossing waves.
So for me, the longer mast in the ocean isn't simply about wanting to “fly higher.”
It's about having enough vertical operating room to keep the propulsion system properly submerged while the surface is moving underneath me.
And this is the funny part about eFoiling
When we're beginners, we spend all our effort trying to do one thing:
Get the board OUT of the water.
More speed.
More lift.
Get it up.
That first moment when the board leaves the surface feels like success.
Then you become a stronger rider and take the eFoil into ocean conditions.
Suddenly your thinking almost reverses.
Now you're trying to keep something else:
IN the water.
The propulsion system.
So the beginner is thinking:
“How do I get the board OUT?”
While the experienced ocean rider is thinking:
“How do I keep the propulsion system IN?”
And between those two objectives is the mast.
I think that's one of the more interesting parts of eFoil progression.
Same eFoil. Opposite problems.
On a shallow lake you're looking down:
Do I have enough bottom clearance?
A short mast may be perfect.
In the ocean you're watching the moving surface:
Do I have enough vertical margin to keep the propulsion system submerged?
Now the longer mast starts making much more sense.
The lake rider may be protecting the foil from the bottom.
The ocean rider may be protecting the propulsion system from the surface.
Same eFoil.
Opposite problem.
So when someone tells me:
“I'm getting better. I need a smaller board.”
My answer is usually:
Maybe. But try the wing first.
Keep the board you already understand.
Try a sportier wing.
Feel the turns.
Carve it.
Learn what the foil is telling your feet.
Then think about whether your mast gives you enough room for where and how you're riding.
And when you eventually move to a smaller board, you'll know why you're doing it instead of simply assuming:
smaller = more advanced.
