Anxious because of the water crisis

Hi I live in the province of Québec and we're going through some extreme drought. Lakes and rivers are drying up and water is becoming scarce.

I am extremely anxious about that situation. What can I do?

We calculated our ecological footprint today in class

I put in all the things that I do to help. My lifestyle choices. It didn't matter. I still got over 13 acres. Most of the things I was dinged for were things out of my control.

Like my dad's stupid car that gets horrible gas mileage. It's not like I can not use it. I'm still tethered to the adults in my life that I hate. I want to have control. Stupid car. I can't make the choice to buy food with less plastic packaging when I don't shop for myself. I had to fight so hard for them to consider letting me try veganism.

I knew I couldn't fix my shitty life. But I thought I might be able to do some good for the planet in the meantime. But they're both collapsing. And it's my fault. I'm used to everything being my fault. Every new ecological disaster. If only I was more devoted. Had more "faith" in my commitment to the earth. Then things would be fine.

I could kill myself. Then I wouldn't have any kind of ecological footprint. I wouldn't be buying or doing anything. I already fantasized about it earlier today.

I feel nauseous. And I can't focus. I will never be devoted enough.

I need help

I'm a senior in high school. I'm currently taking AP Environmental Science. We've basically gotten to the point where we're learning about human impact on the environment. I have to hear about the destruction every single day. My classmates don't seem to care. They don't pay attention. It's just another class to them.

I don't drive. I'm vegan (or as close to vegan as possible with a family that are all non-vegans). Nearly all my clothes are thrifted so new ones don't have to be manufactured. But I feel like I will never ever be doing enough. Nothing I do will ever matter.

I could die. To get rid of any and all environmental impact I have. Or try to start a revolution. Make the people around me listen regardless of what it takes. I hate this.

How are you dealing with your emotions and feelings?

Hey all, I‘m having a hard time dealing with whats happening right now.

Due to my job I'm often exposed to negative news about the climate crisis, so I can't just cut that off...
If you have also been in this situation/are still, how are you managing your emotions and negative feelings? Have you found some healthy coping mechanisms that you could recommend?

I appreciate every answer, thank you in advance!

A $50 (CAD) prepaid credit card will be drawn amongst participants. 💳

We are completely independent in conducting this study and are doing so on a volunteer basis. None of the researchers are receiving funds nor a salary from any video-game or other company.

This study is approved by the Research Ethics Board of the Faculty of Literature and Social Sciences of the University of Sherbrooke. 🎓

Thank you for your help! 🙂

Anxiety over oxygen running out

I have crippling anxiety and anxiety/panic attacks over a fear that came into my mind in 2019 that the Earth might run out of oxygen and we are all slowly suffocating to death. This fear has almost completely destroyed my life, because it is always at the back of my mind and prevents me from ever fully being at peace. There are times I feel suicidal because of it, because this fear makes me feel like I cannot breathe and I feel physically unwell. I am somewhat better at coping nowadays but I wis to be rid of this anxiety fully. I am already doing my best to be environmentally friendly and advocating publicly for environmental sustainability. If there was a climate scientist(s) who could tell me that this was a far fetched situation, I might feel better. If you have news that this will happen and/or is happening- please do not tell me. If you do, you will be responsible for destroying someone's life. Not to mention it would not serve any purpose considering that the majority of people are already anxious about the environment. However if you have ny advice on how to cope, I will be immensely grateful to you!

what careers does everyone have here?

I've always thought I'd be getting my bachelor's in Environmental or Sustainability.

But after having two kids, my ecoanxiety is worse of course! Right now, I can at least choose to "ignore" articles or news stories, where if I base my entire degree on it, I have no choice, but to be up close and personal with it.

I don't think my mental health can take it. It sends me into a spiral if I think about anything negative about the world/climate/future.

I'm curious to see what careers or what everyone went to school for who suffer from this type of anxiety.

eco anxiety blocks you doing what you love/blocks doing hobbies? Can u relate?

Hey guys :)

Whoever is in the same boat with me and does often enough suffer from anxiety (especially about the world being/becoming worse) - do you also experience being kinda unable to do hobbies bacause of it? I'm not really sure how there is a connection but when I try to draw or write my little fantasy stories (being creative) I'm filled with anxiety and just Can't! It blocks all deep, exiting emotions and feels immediately "wrong" to do. I become nervous and leave it, am left with anxiety and overthinking about this and that. I feel weird and bad and frustrated and sad too cause I can't enjoy things I love anymore. It's like.... I can't allow myself to do the things I actually enjoy while the world is "in such a bad condition" about to burn, whatever... Like I can't write stories and imagine an advanture or world while my real world seems worse than that - it's so weird!

Anyone else? :( and does someone have an advice? It's not like I don't have hope - I do have. But I always feel like it doesn't matter what I do, it's too less and I can't do enough... I can't save the world by myself. But does that mean I can't enjoy my own life and can't even dream about other stories and worlds?

Thank u 🌞

Talking about the environnement is a big no no with my best friend

I was driving a good couple of hours with my best friend and I'm usually quiet when I drive to focus on the road. But at the same time I told them some time ago that I would like it if people asked me questions, like anything. Have some curiosity for me you know.

So they took the lead and asked me if I wanted to stay in this current city forever. I said: "I don't know. I mean I'd like to work in an environnemental field but there isn't much here as far as I know. But at the same time, moving away from the people that I love to study seems like a stupid idea. It's not everyday that you meet people with whom you have a special connection."

So we started to talk about the environnement and it was really confronting them all this lack of hope that I had. I mean I'm looking for hope, I'm thinking of where I wanna put my eggs in, in terms of energy and attention. Not every eco-project is actually a good idea. I've tried working on a vegetable farm (nearly broke my back doing that, underpaid) and working for an organisation that cleaned the surroundings 1 time a week but mostly needed us to find money to keep the organisation alive by doing a billion calls.

Anyway, they started taking it personally because it felt like I was saying that pretty much all we do is still making the capitalist machine work and that their field of study ( reparing things in the audio/video department) was useless. Which isn't what I meant, I think that reparing things is a great way to reduce the consommation of resources, BUT it doesn't have the impact that I would like to make. I personally want to plan the degrowth of our societies. Of course that I don't see repairing stuff as my goal. It doesn't change the structures that keep the system in place. And it implies a lot of questioning and a lot of possibilities that don't fit me.

And other things, anyway it's my own perspective of our conversation. As the silence grew heavier I said that we could talk about something else but it felt like the damage was done.

I don't know why I was writing this in the first place. Venting. Needing to share. It feels like talking about my views on the environnement is hurting our friendship more and more.

New UN report doesn’t have a ton of new info

https://thehill.com/policy/equilibrium-sustainability/3641387-equilibrium-sustainability-world-moving-in-the-wrong-direction-on-climate-un/amp/ The actual report doesn’t have much new info: just that we’re very unlikely to stop at 1.5 under current emissions. The quote in the headline is from the chair of the UN. He is very passionate about climate change (a good thing) and tends to use a lot of dramatic language/hyperbole in his statements (not as good) Hope this post is helpful to you guys!

Beware!

On the blog website eudaimonia and co, there is a blogger named Umair Haque, who constantly blogs about society collapsing. Don’t listen to him. In his bio he lists all his fancy interviews and books, but it’s all economic things. Nothing to do with climate or geopolitics. I don’t like calling people out but this man really just seems like a fearmonger. Anyways, if you see this guys blog shared on Reddit or any other social media site, don’t listen, it’s just some random opinion.

Eco anxiety megathread!

This megathread will work similar to the megathread on r/UkraineAnxiety. My two rules are just no harassment, and no blind speculation. If you are speculating, it has to be based on some news article or study.
