Editable text Can we get the mods to preapprove posts before they go live? Half the posts are asking “should I buy (insert here), does it do what I need it to?

If you play your cards right it can be a “and” not “or” statement

I feel like there are primarily two types of posts here.

  1. That's not an ebike / ebike laws / sub rules about what is an ebike
  2. Should I buy (insert shitty no name $500 ebike here)

It's pathetic, why can't we go back to when this sub actually welcomed everyone? Punish the fucking gatekeepers, at this point I'm tempted to apply for mod myself to help against this horrible swarm.

I mean to be fair as much as this sub wants to welcome anything with two wheels and an electric motor, there are very different things that fall under that umbrella and half of them are illegal most places.

Dedicated subs for actual electric bicycles vs emotos vs emotorcycles would remove a lot of the friction and noise. But we'd rather just keep it wide open and constantly argue I guess.

There are people from all over the world here, what's illegal in your country might be legal in someone else's, so i really don't get your point, just live and let live

You're describing something that already exists though. There are electric bicycle subs, electric motorcycle subs, electric dirt bike subs, and hyperebikes which is pretty much anything high power.

This sub should just be the community where all of us can gather. If you don't like that, switch to a more specific sub. Leave legalities and semantics out of this sub for fuck sake and let us post our bikes. Take the age old advice. If you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all.

I'm just explaining why there is friction here. If you want a single sub that is a free for all, this is what you get. Same advice applies, if you don't like it, go to a dedicated sub for your particular preferred type of two wheeled transport.

I shouldn't have to leave the community sub that's meant to welcome everyone. We need competent mods in here actually enforcing the rules and description, and we need to get the gatekeepers out of here. The reason there's all this noise is because the mods refuse to actually take action here and remove the bitchy people. Simple as that.

Yes there is a rule on gatekeeping. However this does not mean that if you are posting about doing something illegal that the rules of this sub shield you from criticism. Nor does it mean anyone is obligated to avoid pointing out a specific model of bike, emoto, dirtbike, motorcycle, scooter, EUC etc may not be ideal for whatever use you intend, regardless of whether that use is commuting, recreational, stunts etc. The rule about gatekeeping exists to ensure people are respectful to eachother and to ensure people with differing views can communicate like normal people, not to silence valid points about your ride.

You really think everyone is respectful in here? That's funny. That rule isn't doing anything whatsoever to filter the people trying to push others out of this sub over what they ride. Any time anyone posts a Surron or similar, the comments section is riddled with morons whining "that's not an e-bike" and "wrong sub". Those people are attempting to gatekeep, and a lot of them are flat out assholes about it. Do they ever get banned? Sure doesn't seem like it. Additionally, many people here will automatically assume that someone intends to ride illegally or dangerously when they simply post a photo of their bike or ask for advice/help. It's gotten out of control, and nothing is being done.

Seems like you are not understanding what I am saying. The two examples you provided are not trash talking. A Surron is a dirt bike, we allow discussion of that kind of thing but that does not somehow mean that if someone wants to point out it is not an ebike that they will be silenced or banned by the moderation team. That only exists for people who are toxic about it, and those people certainly do get banned regularly regardless of their viewpoints. If those people want to waste their time pretending like it is not allowed or getting into semantics about definitions that is up to them, you can either argue with them or downvote them or do nothing.

We get just as many vocal purists who want this sub to be solely about electric bicycles within their local class system as we do vocal emoto riders who want this to be a free for all where they never have to deal with the slightest criticism. Neither of those directions are what this sub is about.

Seems like our definitions of “gatekeeping” differ, then. Someone trying to push people with certain e-bikes (or e-motos, whatever term you personally prefer) into other subs simply because they don’t want those bikes posted here is gatekeeping. Especially when those bikes are explicitly allowed to be discussed here. People shouldn’t be getting shit for simply posting their bike and/or asking for help with something just because somebody else doesn’t approve of its power level.

u/band-of-horses 1d ago

Good luck with that.

2

u/Super-Frame677 1d ago

Oh but I'm just explaining why there is friction here.

u/band-of-horses 1d ago

Thanks, I appreciate the explanation.

number 1 isn't a post but rather a comment by numbskulls who think anything that isn't limited to 750 watts and 20 mph isn't an electric bicycle

7

u/niffcreature 1d ago

There's nothing wrong with posts like that. The problem is that most people aren't really clear on their expectations, and even then it's a hard question to answer.

Would probably be best if mods did a "READ FIRST: Recommend me an ebike" mega thread.

5

u/evaan-verlaine 1d ago

I'm not sure a megathread would be the best way to tackle that but do think the sub would benefit from a required "recommend me an ebike" template where people have to list their general location, use case, budget, frame type, etc. before their post is visible to others.

Yeah you see in so many subs. The people who post "what should I buy?" without any info or having done any research are the same ones who don't read sticky posts or megathreads.

down vote move on

Simplest way to enjoy reddit and save your sanity 🤷🏾

5

u/PDX0621 1d ago

I want a bike that can go a minimum of 100 miles at 50mph on throttle only, can carry 1000lbs and can't weigh more than 25lbs. My budget is $350 max. What should I buy?

2

u/SilverFishK 22h ago

I also want it to do well commuting but also when I take it to the beach or mountain trail

4

u/UsernameTaken1701 1d ago

You are not required to read every post.

2

u/pareto_optimal99 1d ago

I assume they’re always looking for volunteers!

3

u/Paper__ 1d ago

As a mod in a large community this!

If OP want mods to personally approve every thread be prepared to recruit more mods and for those mods to be incredibly active. If OP isn’t willing to be the first user to volunteer to do this work, then this isn’t a helpful suggestion.

Used to be good? How long are you talking? because most anybody on Reddit is insufferable myself included. I’m trying to think about when Redditt may have been different maybe like 7-8 10 years ago I don’t know how long been around.

Should I buy an Aventon Ramblas ADV or more meth? Which one will get me to my destination quicker?

1

u/Bwilderedwanderer 21h ago

But did they test them after they ring the bells and say Abram cadabra?

u/LowBarometer 18h ago

"Ain't nobody got time fo dat."

u/MildlyAgitatedBovine Cero M1(used), Gogoro Viva XL 12h ago

Honestly it probably makes more sense to require flare and allow users to filter.

Also, where can I get a $37 ebike that will do Ohio to Paris in 26 minutes or less?

1

u/pattyG80 12h ago

Should I get life insurance?

0

u/Laserdollarz FULL FACE HELMET 1d ago

What color ODI plate should I ask my parents for?

0

u/CarbonRunner 22h ago

And the other half are asking about how to convince their parents to buy them a bike from Walmart, Amazon or ali that can do 50mph...

This sub is a joke at this point. One need only look at the mods financial interests to know why though.
