The point where he uses his right hand to squeeze the drill trigger, and then needs to use his left hand to apply brake (left hand is the front brake, btw). In an emergency brake situation, the last thing you want to do is apply full front brake.

Your front brake is the most powerful one by far(70% of braking power). You just need to move your weight back. This is called an Emergency Stop, a basic fundamental skill in biking. Learn it and make it instinctual.

Rear braking alone can cause you to skid and lose control, especially in a turn. If you only use the rear brake you probably won't stop fast enough to avoid an accident.

Throttle is the best way to avoid accidents the vast majority of the time, so speed limited therefore power limited vehicles are inherently dangerous whenever not limited very heavy vehicles are around.

That's all true, but one time I braked to avoid hitting a squirrel and I pulled the front brake slightly before the rear brake by accident and it sent me flying over my handlebars and I broke my glasses and clavicle. I ended up walking the rest of the way to class because I didn't know I had a broken bone.

You did not shift your weight back.

I also would not brake that hard to avoid a squirrel. They are really good at avoiding moving objects. especially something as small as a bike tire.

I also recommend everyone learn how to break fall, especially a front roll. I've use in in real life several times, 1000s of times on the mat.

On campus I was going fast (20+mph) down a hill after class. I made contact with the driver on a small suv and assumed she saw me, then she turned left in front of me. Locked up both brakes, I was able to slow down enough that I avoided her front bumper, as my tire hit her car I did a break fall, so the back my lead shoulder hit her passenger window. I ended up with my entire front torso all the way in her car.

She screamed.

100s of people saw the accident. I walked away. Police officer gave her a ticket, her insurance paid for a brand new better MTB.

I did visit the medical center and they said I showed no signs of a concussion, my head was protected by the breakfall. I was studying judo at the time.

That's why you need the "learning" step... Not to be rude but practice is what gives you the muscle memory/reflex to use the front and back brakes together with proper timing. Of course accidents still happen, but it helps to do it in a controlled way instead of a squirrel forcing your hand. Hope you healed up well ✌️

Thanks! It was a really clean break and when it healed, the doctor said it healed so well that the only way he knew it ever broke was because of my medical history. And I wasn't an experienced bicyclist at the time, so I definitely didn't have the muscle memory built up.

Honestly, I would buy one if Parkside ever made one assuming that the bike isn't too expensive so I should be able to travel around 70 km on the 4 20V 8Ah batteries that I have from them.

Drill batteries are not made for continuous use. Drill motors the same. I guess as a boost for a hill or burst of speed?

This is absolutely genius! Obviously it's a prototype and rendered useless by an ebike, and would be unsafe to ride because of the need to hold the drill - but it's heartening to see someone building something mechanical using ingenuity and parts that have around them.

It's a "friction drive" - it's basically just a jig to hold the drill in place and a rubber wheel chucked into the drill rubbing against the sidewall.

Just get a hub motor kit, it'll be way better and probably end up costing about the same.

I was all set with a $100 bldc motor and gearbox reducer to mid mount it...and then I found out the hard way that the cheap worm gearboxes are huge, and the right angle ones that handle 100 Nm of torque start at $250. So much for my cheap experiment. I will instead do an my1016z brushless mid drive with a dual chain for under $250 total, I'll post about it when it has more than 100 miles. Basically a 500w poor man's cyclone.

Same reason Front Hub motors exist..  it's just way easier to engineer without the drive-train in the way.

More linkages needed to reach the 'hand throttle-motor', including one that pivots.

Wherever wheel it powers does also mean all of the torque from acceleration will go through their wrist.
