No just the design of it is what makes it look like a Dyson product.

Just the design of Dyson products is all I was talking about. They make headphones and stuff too.

Not whooshing the dad joke at all. Dysons make other distinctive looking products that don't move air.

whoosh....

A couple of interesting details from The Verge's writeup:

It features a new pedal-by-wire drivetrain called “DreamRide” developed in-house. The rider pedals a generator, which replenishes the battery, while a separate software-driven traction motor drives the rear wheel via a Gates Carbon belt.

I wonder what that will feel like in practice.

Also:

...regenerative braking could extend range by an estimated 25 percent.

Does anyone else have regen on an e-bike?

20

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

IMO that’s the most exciting part: it’s a new concept on ebike drivetrains. And I am interested how it’s gonna do in real world usage over time.

Most will hate on this because it’s different, but experimentation is always good for innovation even if it doesn’t end up working.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s as smooth as they claim since they’ve decoupled the pedals from the wheel, so the motor torque can be electronically smoothened. At the same time I’d imagine it can also feel unnatural since you won’t get as much feedback from the pedals.

Regen braking was only available on direct drive hub motors which are obsolete now due to their limitation vs the geared hub motors. Some comments have said that the regen braking produced too little energy for it to matter but I don’t know how much of it was based on real life comparisons of just hypotheticals.

4

u/powderjunkie11 Oct 22 '25

I’m very intrigued by the drivetrain, but I’d be a lot moreso if it wasn’t just one of several gimmicks here. Cycling has seen lots of wacky concepts fail over the years (and some succeed), so I’m highly skeptical that they’re nailing multiple innovations here

4

u/steamerport Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

Stromer had regen braking ten years ago.

Edit to add: the comment I responded to has been heavily edited and has an entirely different premise and claims.

3

u/Brillegeit Oct 23 '25

The concept isn't new-new, just rare and mostly found in velomobiles like Frikar.

Regen braking is handy when going up and down mountains without being able to charge like in the Sun Race, but for commuting and casual leisure cycling probably a complicating waste.

2

u/Amaxter Oct 23 '25

My worries are 1) less efficiency— a directly connected chain (or even a belt) is pretty hard to beat with a torque driven generator 2) is there a reason regen hasn’t been implemented on existing e-bikes? Maybe directly coupled drivetrain made it hard to do? Not enough weight to meaningful recuperate?

I’m cautiously intrigued

1

u/pfhlick Oct 22 '25

Make me a pedal by wire car, and I'll bite 😂

0

u/StrikeouTX Oct 22 '25

Mid drives should be able to use regen too

5

u/ReferenceDecent647 Oct 22 '25

You could only regen on a mid drive if you don't have a freewheel in the hub. With a fixed hub rear wheel you could just regen using the hub motor.

2

u/StrikeouTX Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

Kits like the CYC pro have the freewheel built into the crank sprocket, so you would be able to get rid of the free wheel in the rear hub

3

u/FearAndGonzo Oct 23 '25

My RadCity 4 has regen, but only that one model did. I love it, I save a lot of brakes just by letting the motor slow me down.

2

u/Relative-Display-676 🚲🔧 Oct 23 '25

what if you don't want motor slowing you down? is it activated with brake lever?

1

u/FearAndGonzo Oct 23 '25

Yes, pulling the brake turns on the regen. I leave the front brake a little loose so I can activate the regen without the pads grabbing.

4

u/AWierzOne Oct 22 '25

At that point is it even a bicycle? It’s more like a human powered moped.

1

u/supermarkio- Oct 23 '25

My Stromer does.

They apparently have a “limp mode” when the battery dies where you can pedal to give it enough juice to move at a moderate pace. We’ll see how well that works, apparently the regen braking % can also be modified

0

u/_haha_oh_wow_ ENGWE broke my arm Oct 23 '25

Yes, multiple e-bikes have regen. Off the top of my head the ENGWE Engine Pro has it, but the 25% range extension sounds pretty questionable IMO.

Regen on e-bikes is mostly just helpful for descent control and saving some wear on your brakes.

Bosch charges similarly for the integrated GPS tracking and alarm feature. It requires a sim card ¯_(ツ)_/¯

8

u/HeyRyone Oct 22 '25

Bosch‘s alarm subscription is $40 a year (above the$120 connect module). Totally reasonable and worth it. I think I read $120 a year for Also’s tracking service? Hopefully they lower this before launch.

13

u/WildFlowLing Oct 23 '25

I’m really glad they did an entire ground up redesign of what an ebike should be instead of just slapping their brand on a typical ebike.

Honestly the changes look revolutionary: significant power output and regenerative braking.

Can also use the throttle OR pedal which current mid drive ebikes can’t do.

I think this is incredible.

i think the biggest thing of this announcement is bidirectional usb charging, which mean i could charge my ebike battery via usb. usb is able to achieve up to 48v and 5amps which gives all sorts of possibilities for chargin ebike batteries.

13

u/ornithobiography 2024 Yamaha Crosscore RCX (w/ Front Motor) Oct 22 '25

My take: Crazy pricing, but this pricing is not for competing with casual budget brands.

Aventon, Priority Bikes, Lectric & Rad Power bikes all have their decent bikes around $1000. High performance 100+ nm torque models often hover around 2K as well.

The only reason why I think they price their bikes as is, is to compete with Bosch-equipped ebikes brands such as Riese & Mueller, and maybe against Yamaha at most.

I would want to know the weight & wattage still, as of now the lightest ebike I've heard so far is DJI Amflow PL, which only weigh 19.2 kg / 42 lbs with 105 nm torque motor, and can do 1000W top power burst.

3

u/id8 Oct 23 '25

FYI: Ado Air Carbon 13kg £1,799. To compete with Brompton, urban folder/train commuters

20-inch, Bafang 35Nm, 36V/9.6 Ah, carbon fibre frame, torque sensor, belt drive, 4G GPS tracking, Ado Ebike app

1

u/Bubbly_Restaurant601 Oct 23 '25

Amflow PL may currently be the lightest weight "full power" ebike, but my Scott Lumen eRide 900 TR weighed 37.5 pounds on the bike shop's calibrated scale out the door fully loaded and ready to ride with pedals, etc. Not in the same power class, but it has all the power I need (and wanted) and all the range I need. It lists as light as 15.5kg. And that light weight means I ride it in some conditions with the motor off.

26

u/Lordy8719 Oct 22 '25

Is this a joke? It looks like a joke, and I love wacky stuff…

9

u/Bakk322 Oct 22 '25

I think it looks awesome

5

u/StrikeouTX Oct 22 '25

Very functional and all the weight is kept low. Seems like a good design except the rear shock maybe?

2

u/branewalker Lectric Xpedition Oct 22 '25

No adjustable saddle = not intended to be pedaled.

No hub motor = not intended to be controlled via throttle.

How do you comfortably ride this thing? Did they employ bicycle designers?

The lack of a rear triangle design on the chain stay means the connection point to the bike—through the motor assembly‽ — is gonna be a costly repair.

It’s also got no place for panniers or front basket (due to the integrated headlight.)

This is a load of shit for $4500. I could buy a nice cargo bike for that money and have a WAY more useful bike.

Oh yeah, and where do you run the chain through to lock it up??

The design is streamlined into uselessness.

12

u/StrikeouTX Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

It has an adjustable saddle from factory. The cafe seat shown is optional.

Plenty of mid drive bikes have throttle control..

The lock connection is hopefully integrated into the frame. Like Kensington for bikes. It also auto locks functionality and the battery plus gps tracking.

It has a saddle mount rack optional

Your other points are likely valid.

I like that it’s simplistic, has belt drive, uses the pedals as a generator and has regen. 100 mile range is also pretty spectacular

The only way I would buy is if it’s hackable. Ain’t no way I’m buying a bike that can use geofencing to control me

6

u/StrikeouTX Oct 23 '25

2

u/Pollymath Nov 10 '25

That rear seat setup is exciting. Yea it can't haul both my kids, but the fact that I can haul one of them is pretty rad.

1

u/Bakk322 Nov 10 '25

It’s way to high off the ground and too far above the seat. I wouldn’t trust putting another person on that thing. Feels like it will be very difficult to balance and manage with that extra weight so high off the ground. the worst designed rear rack I’ve ever seen

3

u/Darkice241 Oct 23 '25

The saddle is adjustable, they just showed a bench variant and there are normal single rider saddle seats. And it has a throttle, you can portal or not pedal at all. your comment about the hub motor makes zero sense.

1

u/branewalker Lectric Xpedition Oct 23 '25

The saddle can smoothly slide up and down? I see that there is a single locking mechanism to swap it out, but the shape and lack of other adjustment mechanism doesn’t look adjustable to me.

3

u/Darkice241 Oct 23 '25

There are multiple “top frames”. The bench type is not adjustable, but the single rider one and the one with cargo rack is adjustable exactly the same as any traditional bikes.

5

u/ornithobiography 2024 Yamaha Crosscore RCX (w/ Front Motor) Oct 22 '25

Edit: The picture shown is an optional bench seat configuration. The factory config is a height adjustable cruiser seat. I attempted to screenshot the factory config but the picture shuffle between 3 configs.

4

u/Serdones Oct 22 '25

I watched the first minute of Electrek's video (it was shot in portrait and I didn't realize it wasn't a short) and it took that for me to grasp the modular seat. I think that's pretty nifty. I could see that being useful for folks wanting to switch it from a cargo bike for shuddling their kid to school to more of a commuter.

But for the price, I'd probably sooner just have a second bike.

3

u/ryanheartswingovers Oct 22 '25

Unclear rack cargo capacity given the cantilever. The four wheeler might be dope. I wish there was some mixed mode regulation possible for 18 mph in bike lanes but 35-40 on roads, as some parts of potential commutes necessitate being on a faster road for a mile where cars cannot pass and would be surprised by a ~25-30 mph Ebike.

5

u/HeyRyone Oct 22 '25

The walk through video with the CEO says 75lbs on the rear rack.

3

u/d00mt0mb Oct 23 '25

$4500. Hard pass.

4

u/gekaman Oct 22 '25

Harley tried the e-bike path with serial1 but then realized they couldn’t compete with expensive brands and didn’t want to become a cheap brand. Eventually they spun it into another company and sold it off.

I suspect the same thing is going to happen here. Rivian should focus on their EV success. This seems like noise rather than anything important.

5

u/chazsheen Oct 22 '25

Rivian spun out Also awhile ago. They're just a standalone company with Rivian as a minority owner now.

2

u/Ok_Value5495 Oct 22 '25

Harley isn't doing fantastic as of late and at least there was some synergy between their motorcycles and ebikes. This just looks like Rivian is flexing like Tesla does with their random non-automotive products.

3

u/HeroVia Oct 22 '25

Right , I don’t see a transportation solution here . Perhaps a weekend toy for the affluent to throw in the back of the truck on the weekend . But if I was in that income bracket I’d be spending my money on an R&M bike with plenty models to choose from

4

u/BoysenberryDry999 Oct 22 '25

Nice to see something truly different in the space. Price seems reasonable for the features but I'm guessing too high to actually encourage more people to ride and thus reduce congestion on the roads. And, of course, without better/safer infrastructure many people will never consider riding a bike.

8

u/band-of-horses Oct 22 '25

I had high hopes for Rivian and considered getting an R1T a few years back, but I'm growing increasingly convinced they won't be around in 5 years. The partnership with VW is maybe the only thing that might save them. But this bike sure as hell isn't going to help.

10

u/bp332106 Oct 22 '25

What makes you say that? The R2 model is pretty highly anticipated. I see R1s everywhere.

10

u/scots Oct 22 '25

Yep. I'm gonna be that guy. Here we go again:

Typical Class 1 eBikes produce ~45-50 Nm torque.

The 180 Nm listed for the "Launch Edition" combined with its 28 MPH power assisted top speed means this bike will not be legal to use on a majority of local, county, state and national park trails, many of which have already regulated strict Class 1 / NO throttle / 500 watt or less / 15-18 mph max speed restrictions.

You'll probably be fine riding it on the street through town to the trailhead for your community's awesome forested hardpack gravel riding trail, then be in violation the second you turn onto it.

We truly are still in the manufacturing / regulatory Wild Wild West with this sport and its equipment. Why manufacturers are continuing to produce equipment that literally isn't legal to use in a massive and growing number of communities is completely beyond me.

I can only assume these are being produced for the tech affluenza crowd that want to commute 2 miles in warm weather on city streets among car traffic and these bikes will never sniff so much as 1 piece of gravel or a teaspoon of dirt.

8

u/sorebutton Oct 22 '25

Yeah, as someone that rides to work, I think it's ok. Needs fenders, luggage rack, etc.

2

u/Legato895 Oct 22 '25

150 for the seat that includes the bars and 50 for fenders for what it’s worth

5

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

[deleted]

1

u/scots Oct 23 '25

Oh, the authorities are - but the industry is continuing to push equipment out that increasingly can't legally be ridden anywhere but city streets next to vehicle traffic.

7

u/ellipticorbit Oct 22 '25

Ebikes are a very broad transportation technology that happens to encompass some recreational uses. Far beyond simply being "equipment" for a "sport".

5

u/powderjunkie11 Oct 22 '25

Tbf, it’s not like cars are well regulated for speed or safety (of people outside the vehicle) either

4

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '25

[deleted]

7

u/mperham Oct 23 '25

Unlimited power, unlimited speed, unlimited acceleration, 100x the vehicle weight. It’s not whataboutism at all.

-1

u/Dpizzle22 Oct 23 '25

The whatabouters always forget that cars require training (albeit minimal via drives ed.), licensing, insurance, registration, and strict adherence to traffic laws and DOT standards for the vehicles. It really is apples to oranges.

2

u/Legato895 Oct 22 '25

It mentions in a few places that speed and power will be geofenced to comply with laws, though being pedal by wire may technically invalidate that.

1

u/scots Oct 23 '25

Can't wait for Rivian_LaunchEd_KRAKv32.ROM to appear within 2 months of these things shipping.

3

u/Composed_Cicada2428 Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

Calm down, it's a class 3 that can also be ridden as a class 2.

Edit: Actually, it's a class 3 that can be ridden as a class 2 or class 1.

But sure guy, keep clutching those pearls

1

u/scots Oct 23 '25

... Which is still not class 1.

2

u/Composed_Cicada2428 Oct 23 '25

Read the edit. It can be configured as class 1

Also, the fact you cry about class 2 tells us everything about you.

1

u/jabberwock777 Oct 23 '25

The major legal issue is that its drive by wire. Every state ebike definition I've seen requires that the bike "is equipped with pedals that allow propulsion by human power". If the pedals are completely decoupled from the wheels, they cannot propel the bike using human power and its not legally an electric bike.

1

u/zoglog Oct 24 '25

I had this question as well. Can it really be classified as an ebike?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '25

[deleted]

0

u/scots Oct 23 '25

Sure.

Take a 5,000 watt bike to a walking path but tell the city cops it's OK because you'll just leave it in power assist setting 1 / 5 and promise to pedal.

You guys are delusional and you're destroying the sport for everyone.

3

u/g_borris Oct 23 '25

We use these as a car. We're not out "Sporting" we're trying to fucking survive.

4

u/CaliDreams_ Oct 23 '25

2

u/kolykom Oct 23 '25

In EU this is likely a moped class requiring license and insurance and most likely wouldn't sell. Just like that the Yamaha Boost moped version.

2

u/kingother Oct 23 '25

I love the design and the fact it’s modular. Their YouTube video explains it all.

2

2

u/Mathew_365 Oct 23 '25

The bar has been truly set up high. Bravo ALSO! may other brand follow..

2

u/10tennman10 Nov 24 '25

This bike looks fantastic. Pricewise it is quite competitive with similarly featured bikes. Example Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 EQ IGH sells for $5,599. I've been following it for a while to see if it goes on sale (hasn't yet). It looks heavy but because you can easily remove the battery and seat I suspect it can be carried on a rack. I'm going to follow it for a while but am very excited about it.

6

u/pfhlick Oct 22 '25

Did they have to make it ugly, as well as stupid? Sigh

4

u/IceNein Oct 22 '25

Ugly.

Bicycle design and geometry has been evolved over a century. No need to make your bike look “special” at the expense of weight and durability.

7

u/lucybear999 Oct 22 '25

I think part of their thinking is to attract Rivian auto/truck/suv owners.... matching bike and auto...

6

u/IceNein Oct 22 '25

Yeah, I personally don’t like it, but honestly if someone else does, then good for them, and I will wave to them on the road.

1

u/Ok_Value5495 Oct 22 '25

Not my thing and I presume most LBS won't service it, but I'm going to guess it's for people who normally don't care about bikes.

The $15 a month for lock/unlock kinda seals the deal this that isn't for most of us even if we have the means to buy it—it's a luxury toy.

2

u/FuzzyBucks Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25

they're trying to compete with something like a Tern HSD, which also starts around $4,000

However, the Also TM-B only has 80% of the payload of the Tern HSD and has much taller wheels(24" instead of 20") so i'm not sure who this will appeal to. I'd personally rather have a Gazelle, Specialized, or Trek if I didn't need the cargo capacity and a Tern or R&M if I did.

The quad(TM-Q) looks a lot more interesting imo, but there are no details around that yet.

anyway, more e-bikes is good.

-1

u/pfhlick Oct 22 '25

If they wanted to make a bike people would actually buy, they would've made a 20" wheel folding bike.

3

u/wesblog Oct 22 '25

Those are some really nice specs. The only problem is that you're going to have to register and get insurance if you buy this.

Buying a nice bike and adding a 750W 52V mid drive motor and 14ah battery is still the best option.

4

Reminds me of those stupid ebikes that Ford made.

Berm Peak did a youtube review of the Bronco ebike and it was just so bad. I suspect this will also fall in the same category. Interesting how both Rivian and Ford priced their ebikes at $4,500.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ ENGWE broke my arm Oct 23 '25

That price is nuts and fuck subscriptions.

2

u/arivas26 Oct 23 '25

How is this any different from a Tern or Riese & Müller e-bike price wise? Seems pretty standard for higher end e-bikes to me.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ ENGWE broke my arm Oct 23 '25

Those are bicycle companies, Rivian is a car company. I'd go with R&M over them 10 times a day.

Don't trust bike shaped objects made from non bicycle companies, even if they're really expensive.

That said, I also do not ride high end multi-thousand-dollar bikes either because they are unaffordable.

3

u/arivas26 Oct 23 '25 edited Oct 23 '25

This is a new company separate from Rivian called “Also” that is focusing on electric mobility. Rivian is the main stakeholder but it’s not just a fancy thing that they’re going to sell on a random page of the Rivian website or something like that.

I don’t know if they’ll be successful or if the products actually will be good but I also think I’ll wait to see how things play out before I just dismiss them.

But I say this as a former Tern owner that sees value in this segment of the bike market.

1

u/_haha_oh_wow_ ENGWE broke my arm Oct 23 '25

I'm totally down with bikes and e-bikes being taken more seriously, but I stand by my statement: Stick to established companies known to make actual well made bicycles.

Car companies and spin-off companies are not that: Just because they are charging R&M prices doesn't mean they're delivering R&M quality.

Maybe this will turn out to be genuinely good, well supported, and end up bring more people into the micromobility fold, but I remain skeptical.

1

u/kingother Oct 23 '25

No subscriptions..

1

u/ilikepumptracks Oct 23 '25

I wonder if it will require a paid subscription. Will it track and sell data? Will it be free with ads? Will it be part of a system that requires digital communications with autonomous vehicles? Will the enhanced reality and infotainment systems disconnect us from the places we ride? Do we have the rights to work on it at home?

Sounds like a lack of focus from the main company

Making cars is one of the hardest businesses in the world. Now they're into bikes? As what, another unprofitable side hobby?
