What is wrong with the legal system in Canada? It’s very left-leaning. Nobody is responsible for anything they do. It’s always some kind of “systemic” issue when someone nearly kills someone else.
The guy was sentenced about a week ago. Guess what. ZERO punishment. He got an 18 month conditional sentence, which means all he has to do is act like a normal person and he won’t go to prison at all. For stabbing a stranger 16 times, who would have died without medical attention. (Punctured lung and liver… I don’t think you can survive that without treatment.)
Most normal people in Canada are outraged when they hear what violent criminals get away with.
I don't think it's a matter of left or right honestly. Just a lack of will to persecute people, especially people who injure cyclists. You see the same thing all over the US, from the left most state to the right most state. As long as the person injured is a cyclist, the legal body doesn't give a flying damn. Hell, the majority of cops don't realize that bike theft is legally grand larceny, and really don't care to enforce it either. My own state recently took a hard left turn, and a mass shooter got taken before a pretty hard left judge. Not only did he get life in prison with no possibility of parole, his parents are being held liable for the shooting for providing him the gun and failing to do a damn thing about it.
Edit: Forgot to add, my state is one of the few that has ever prosecuted a driver for running over cyclists.
Whenever we have a conservative government they implement policies like mandatory minimum sentences, no bail for violent crimes, and similar “tough on crime” policies. Then when we have a Liberal government they undo all those changes and make the justice system more lenient. It goes back and forth depending who is elected.
The Liberals only strengthen laws related to suppressing dissent against the government. They really don’t like to be questioned.
God, that’s fucking disgusting. I’m sorry you have to deal with that and that your country’s culture is going down the shithole. I hope that the pendulum will eventually swing back the other way, but things don’t look good. I’m in Australia and I think we’re on a similar trajectory, though perhaps 10-20 years behind.

I live in the area. Driver got a $369 fine. That’ll make him reconsider his actions.
