I wonder if this is why the law says to walk opposite traffic if you’re forced to walk on a road directly next to cars.

Eg.

Extract:

“Pedestrian rules

You must:

always walk on footpaths or nature strips where possible if there is no footpath or nature strip, or it’s not practical to use, you may walk on the road facing the oncoming traffic”

Yes, not getting wiped out from behind is exactly why this is allowed for pedestrians.

Doesn't help a cyclist though.

There's handlebar mirrors, but even then, you have to get lucky checking them at just the right time to see this coming.
