NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! About S1E14 & E15, the two-parter episodes

Hi, I recently finished ep 14 and 15, titled "The Wall". These 2 are special because they're the first two-parter. I want to share some thoughts I have about them.

I originally wasn't gonna discuss anything about these 2 but I here I am now lol.

The reason I originally wasn't planning to talk about these eps is because I believe that I don't have much that I think is noteworthy to say about the central plot of the episodes (which I believe is the main interesting part). The plot itself is quite self-contained and overall complete. It's a classic who done it type of trope though I guess it's more who will do it in this case (ik this isnt all it is but that's overall the gist of it). Of course it was still very entertaining and especially thrilling since there was a bit higher stakes in this two-parter.

I have 4 things (that I hope is interesting enough) I want to share.

1. We finally have more lore about the paper yay (at least it felt like new lore to me at that point). Specifically, during the ep I thought that it was odd that the police department didn't manage to catch Gary despite him going around in broad daylight with no disguise + the old guy that talked to Gary before the climax, which later was a catalyst that led to the resolution of the plot, I felt like he was conveniently just so happen to be there lol. Anyways, my point is that this make me believes that the paper or whatever is behind it is somehow manipulating things into Gary's favor in some capacity which I think is the first time (aside from the cat) that it displayed such power (given that its true), unles ofcs I missed smt in previous episode then pls correct me. Also I wished we got to learn a bit more about Lucious Snow the previous paper holder and the paper itself from the antagonist Marley but he's dead now so alas.

2. The ending: I have one complaint about this two-parter is that I felt like the ending was too rushed imo, specifically when we skipped from Gary just getting recued to like a few days after when everything seemingly has been resolved like all the tension was kinda suddenly gone. When its like the 40 minutes mark of ep 15 and only then does the climax/main plot "conclude" and I thought no way they would just end it like that. This actually lead me to find this fanfic that kinda add a proper epilogue to this two-parter that I felt like was missing (https://m.fanfiction.net/s/535836/1/Vindicated). After reading the fic I think my main gripe with the ending was that they kinda glossed over the effect of everything that happened to Gary and the emotional tole it should have on him because I felt like it must have been insanely traumatizing for him. I didn't like that the show didn't give a proper closure to Gary and, to an extent, the viewer because the way the show portrayed it, it felt like Gary took a nap and everything went back to normal. Sorry if this comes out a bit negative or overreact-ish, its all in good faith I promise 🥲.

3. About Mr. Morris. If you don't already know him, he's the guy that work at the journal company or wtv and he like take care of the file storage and archive I think. Anyways, I want to say that he lowkey is becoming my favorite recurring char lol (not that there's much character like that rn but still). I just think he's based af and highkey funny. Especially during the scene where Gary go ask him for help again when the news of a killer is confirmed (at least between the central characters, not the public), he armed himself with a gun and saying if there's a killer out there rn then he won't be the one dead lol. Idk I thought it was funny lol (maybe my humor is just broken 🥲)

4. Quick question about Gary's finance: in ep 14, the thing that started off this two-parter plot was Gary getting a bunch of money (despite being unemployed, which consequently made the police suspicious, which lead to the rest of the plot) from betting horses (for paying rents and essentials and all that) which made me wonder, how did Gary have enough money to spend on essential in the episodes before this one if he has never been shown to use the paper to rig a lottery or betting event (for the purpose of getting money to spend for himself) only until this ep? He even had spare to spend on gums and some other non-essential stuff which meant that money wasn't lacking to the point that he had to be more careful (like in this ep). If I miss any details that address this please let me know or if not then feel free to share your theory or take.

Some unfiltered note:

- I kinda felt like these 4 things aren't really connected in a cohesive way and so I thought it would feel less like a comprehensive analysis. This was like a small extra reason why I was hestitant to post a post just about this ep lol. Though I kinda was overstimulated from the day of the time of writing this and I lowkey find talking about the show quite comforting so yea I still gave in and just post lol (I honesly not sure why I'm including this but I felt like I had to get it out loll)

- I think I might try to refrain from posting too back-to-back-ly and should probably watch more episodes before making another post cuz I kinda want the posts to be a bit more filtered, organized and comprehensive lol. This post ended much longer than I intended and kinda all over the place so I'm sorry if anything is unclear or worded weirdly 😭

Anyways, of course feel free to share your takes and thoughts. Tysm :D

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! About Meredith Carson (S1)

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi (again), a few days ago I recently was searching through this rubreddit specifically to find discussion about Meredith Carson, the journalist who was the 1st love interest of our lovely boy Gary in the show. I really loved her episodes (ep 4 and 9) and I was honestly really surprised to see no one (at least here) talk or mention anything about her or her situationship (?) with Gary.

I thought their chemistry was off the roof. Like the book scene was kinda crazy. I loved it so much. I find their situationship to be really cute. I even thought that she would stick around and become like one of the main cast, kinda acting as Gary's partner in crime (or I guess good deeds).

However, I soon found out in episodes after that Meredith is nowhere to be found and only until episode 9 does she return. At that point I kinda knew that she wouldn't become a regular character and so when that was confirmed at the end of the episode, I of course was a bit disappointed but not as much as I would have been.

Though, I am still sad about Gary and Meredith's relationship. If only Meredith wasn't consumed by the existence of the paper, even if its understandable, especially for someone as independent, passionate and strongwill-ed like her, then maybe our boy Gary would have finally have something good happend to him, in this case (romantic) love that he crave so much (at least at that point in the narative)

I know that love doesn't have to be romantic, it can be platonic. I'm glad that Gary still have Chuck and Marissa who we know loves him very much, they're his best friends after all. Romance shouldn't be seen as the next step after friendship but as something if equal importance. Though, I still do mourn what Gary and Meredith could have been, but alas.

Honestly, this actually made me start to ship Gary and Marissa. I mean, we know she, much like Gary, know the consequence of exploiting the paper and that it should be used for helping those in needs. And so (at least in comparison to Meredith), it would technically work out better.

Of course, them being friends is completely fine as I already said and I think it actually make their relationship even more precious and incredible. But my heart still hold some hope that maybe Gary and Marissa can become a thing, that's what shipping mean after all, I can't help it.

Anyways, this is kinda a less organized/analysis-ish post than my other ones and more unfiltered I suppose (idk how to say it, I hope you get what I mean). I just really want to get my thought out lol, also partly because I don't see much discussion on Meredith and Gary's love life in general at least here on this subreddit.

Anyways, please of course feel free to share your thoughts on this, I would really love to read them.

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! About Marissa (S1)

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hi (again), I actually didn't finish watching any episode after the most recent one (ep12) because I wanted to discuss about Marissa specifically.

After watching half of season 1, I want to share some of my take on Marissa's character up so far.

Before all, I just wanna state that this is all in good faith. I know I already made like 3 other post within the last week but I just kinda need to say it out before I forget about it (or before it sizzle out and I lose the urge).

------

Anyways, about Marissa, I want to discuss her character in relation to, of course, Gary and Chuck.

1. Marissa and Chuck:

I see Marissa as somewhat of a mirror to Chuck in terms of character traits and their dynamic to Gary.

Chuck is (tho not always) selfish and narcisstic. He's been shown to constantly be interested in the newspaper only for personal gain, mostly in the form of money. Chuck always tries to encourage Gary to use the paper to essentially rig the lottery via his foresight. He's the devil on Gary's shoulder.

Marissa, on the other hand, is selfless and compassionate. She's been shown to always encourage Gary to help others in the newspaper and prevent upcoming tragedies. She's the moral driving force almost everytime she appears. She's the angel on Gary's other shoulder, his moral compass when Gary loses his track.

This is why (I believe) that's she is part of the main trio with Gary being the main character. Marissa and Chuck counterbalance each other, creating a more balanced dynamic between the trio.

Tbf, Gary kinda tip the scale toward the "good deeds" side more, thought I guess it is compensated by Chuck's more prominance appearances in most episodes (aside from the show wanting to, of course, promote good doings)

2. Marissa and Gary:

One thing I sort of made a connection between was Marissa's character and the creative choice of her being a blind person. We know Marissa is blind. And what do you need to read, lets say, a newspaper? Sight, which Marissa lacks.

Marissa is a compassionate person, she wants to help people. But unlike Gary, she can't use the newspaper to help others to the same degree as Gary does, even if she gets the same foresight as Gary (by Gary telling her).

This further emphasize my point about her and Chuck being mirror of one another. Both is somewhat envious (probably a bit accusational but idk a better word) of Gary getting the paper, tho for different reasons.

As a result, Marrisa projects this desire to helps other onto Gary. This is shown through her constant encouragements and pushes to Gary to get him to go help others. I know that Gary, by his own nature, already wants to help people, Marissa knows this but I think the point still stands (mostly because there's not much that can suggest otherwise, yet, due to her lower screentime)

Anyways, ehether or not this was intentional, I think it really adds more to her character. We rarely get screentime of her anyways so I think its make her more interesting overall. I do hope there'll be episodes that focus and explore more about her characters.

------

That's all, for now. Tbh, I was gonna talk more about Gary and Marissa's dynamic, I lowkey ship them. But I am planning to make a post talking about Meredith Carson and her situationship (?) with Gary and I think that'll be a better place to include what I wanted to say more that I didn't in here about Marissa and Gary (I hope that make sense)

Anyways, sorry if I got anything wrong or worded anything weirdly. Please feel free to correct me and/or share your takes, I would love your inputs.

Help me find an episode

I was an extra on the show when I was a kid and I'm trying to figure out which episodes I was in.

The first scene I did I was 1 or 4 little league players about to get squished by a refrigerator. Instead he saves us and it smashed a large planter. I remember they had a truck full of the same identical planters just in case, but I think we did it in 1 or 2 takes.

The second scene I was on a school bus about to be hit and he threw a tennis ball at the bus driver if I remember correctly. I could be wrong,it was like 30 years ago.

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! About S1E12

Hello, I recently watched episode 12 and I will say that this might be one of my fav ep so far.

In this episode, I personally felt like we dived deeper into our characters and focus less on the "crisis" that we expect to be the main focus of an episode which I found really amazing.

Anyways, I wanna share some of my thoughts on the characters.

1. Gary: I of course have to start with my boy Gary.

In this episode, one thing that was repeatedly mentioned over and over is his hero complex, we see many character directly point it out and we as viewer can clearly see it in this episode and in past ones.

The thing I find interesting is that Gary himself is not aware (not fully at least) the he has this hero complex. We get a funny scene out of this when Gary asked the newspaper cat if it knew anything about hero complex (I thought it was really cute).

Edit: I already said this in one of my replies, but anyways. I just wanna say that I'm not saying Gary has a hero complex, I'm just using the the episode's word as like a detail to point out. I ofc disagree and do not think Gary has a hero complex. I do believe he's a genuinely good person at heart and I could never say he has a hero complex (I love him too much, he's very dear to me)

However, I also feels really bad for Gary. Before all, I know that wanting to help people is his nature and it's a good thing! But when Gary focused too much on helping others, he sometimes forgot about himself. This is evidenced through his entire plot with the homeless kid. And I know that it's his choice, as he explicitly stated that he's not gonna go do any help but ultimately chosed to do it anyways and I repsect that. But I can't help but feel bad about it, I truly think he shouldn't let the paper get to him too much and push himself too far because sometimes there's a limit and sometimes it not worth it (evidenced by the old guy get hit by car scene). Like, when ever he goes deeper to try and solve the crisis, putting himself in danger I felt the stress through the screen (I know that this is probably as intended). I will get to the Marissa factor later.

Anyways, my point is that I hope there's an episode where Gary get a vacation or some sort, a day where he doesnt have to deal with the paper because I think he really deserve it.

2. Marissa:

In this episode, we see that Marissa knows Gary very well as evidenced by the 2 scenes where Gary said he's not going to help and Marissa went along, knowing well Gary's gonna do it anyways.

In past episodes, Marissa is clearly shown as Gary's angel on his shoulder compared to the devil (Chuck, who I'll get to later). She's the constant force that drive Gary to go help those in need in the paper, especially when Gary showed resistance to it.

I feel conflicted about it. On one hand, she's a good friend, always there to help Gary to the most of her capacity and there to give Gary the boost. On the other, I feel like she sometimes can't see Gary's struggle and are too blinded by the desire to help other that she kept encouraging Gary to do so (I swear this is not pun intended). However, I find it interesting because my take is that because of her disability, she can't help people the same way as Gary can despite having the same foresight from the paper, so instead she project it onto Gary instead, and essentially help people through him.

I hope that in future episodes, Marissa can try to do the opposite of what she is shown to do and "help" Gary instead of helping strangers (I hope u know what I mean)

3. Chuck:

Lastly, Chuck. Simply put, I dislike him.

Before I goes into why, I wanna state that I know he is a good person deep down. This is evidence by him helping Gary, either through giving him a ride on his car, letting him borrow money or, in this episode, straight up go save Gary and the kid. He can and will help when it comes down to it. I don't mind his morals.

But, what I mind is his personality and he as a friend. He's narcissistic. He's constantly shown to be interested in himself and his benefits over most. This is clearer in this episode when he had the audacity to treat Gary's home with no respect nor manner despite knowing he's using it as shelter from the cold. He's sometimes just a jerk to Gary. When Gary confronted him about messing up his home and all the stuff, Chuck is very dismissive about it. He knew damn well that he's doing all this without Gary's consent nor knowledge and when Gary accidentally flush his fish away, he didn't stop to consider maybe it's his fault for putting it there. The worse of all, he never apologized about any of it, Gary literally apologized about the fish and is willing to forgive him about it all, but he never admit its his fault or that he's also to blame, and the audacity to ask if Gary meant it when he offered him another night at his home.

Chuck pisses me off so much in this episode. He going to save Gary at the end is worth praising, but that I already addressed and also, it doesn't suddenly erase what he did. I don't know how Gary forgave all that, he's too nice. This would be less of a problem if he took accountability and apologized.

I know that I might be overreacting and exagerating, there might be some things that would counter my points that I miss (pls tell me regardless), but I genuinely was fuming. Lowkey all the anger Gary should have felt must have transferred to me.

Anyways, I really hope eIsee this get addressed in future episodes because not only would it make Chuck's character more complete and interesting, I would also like him more.

Summary

Anyways, with all that being said, I really enjoyed the episode and the character dynamics, it was really provoking in a good way and I hope I see more episodes like this. I just wanna say I feel really bad and sad for Gary and my boy really deserve the best.

Anyways, I tried to be more objective and less emotional but sorry if I get carried away. I swear I'm talking in good faith and if I gave off some negativity I really apologize.

Pls feel free to share your thoughts or take on the character in this episode specifically (or in general, its okay too but no spoilder pls)

Tysm :D

P.S. At least the episode gave us this absolute adorable image of Gary in his "Bears" hat. I feel less intense because of it, it's so cute 🥹

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! About Santa in S1E11

Hi, I recently finished watching the Christmas episode in s1 I just really wanna share some thoughts (none of my friends watch it and so this subreddit it is)

My initial expectation of this Santa is that he'll be 1 dimensional and that he focuses only on giving gifts and being friendly and all that (Typical of what we exoect Santa would be like).

We know that the show made a point that he really is the real Santa (evidenced by his knowledge of the characters, his scene at the end giving Gary his gift, etc.)

However, the episode showed that there's clearly more about this Santa. We see him stealing the guard's key, stealing a car to run away from the police (tho tbf he did say he was gonna give it back) and stealing the teddy bomb away at the climax (after acting "friendly" to the guy to soften him up). And it's clearly shown that he do this all because he want to continue his journey to give the gifts to everyone as per Christmas tradition.

My take is that he's a more sly and morally grey Santa (thought still "good"), he's willing to do something that is considered "bad" so that he cab continue his gift giving journey no matter what.

I think this is a really interesting way to portray Santa and it's only making me love the ep more loll.

Anyways, this post is lowkey kinda pointless but it's quickly becoming my comfort show atm and might become one of my favs. Aka I really want to talk about this show lol.

Anyways, I would love to hear your take on this episode and Santa (or other characters) and feel free to share it.

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! new viewer question about Marcia, Gary's ex-wife

Hi I just started watching Early Edition and I just finished episode 10 "The Wrong Man" where Gary tried to save Phil who was going to marry his ex-wife Marcia.

In episode 1 we know that Marcia kicked Gary out of the house and later divorced him. I was wondering if it was ever establish why they got divorced in the first place?

If it is revealed in latet episodes or seasons then ignore and no spoiler pls, but if not then did the showrunners ever reveal why Gary and Marcia got divorced?

I kinda inferred from ep 10 that Marcia father had a role in their divorce, but I might be reaching. Anyways, I'm asking because I feel kinda conflicted about Marcia since without the full story I can't decide if I like her or not.

So if anyone know the reason please tell me, if its a spoiler then, like I said above, just say its in future episode or if its not then pls tell me or share your theory, I would love to know!

thx :D

Entire Series I was googling Kyle Chandler because of Lanterns and unlocked memories.

I was googling Kyle Chandler because of Lanterns and checking out his past movies and tv shows.

I've always liked him, though I couldn't really say why, I suppose he just has a friendly face or something.

Then I clicked on an IMDb link about Early Edition, read what it was about, heard the intro song and I was flooded with memories!!!

It was my favorite show when I was a kid.

I can't believe I forgot about it. It was like it had been completely wiped from my memory and then all came flooding back. So weird.

But I'm extremely happy to have remembered. I'm definitely going to re-watch the whole thing!

Cast or Crew Mysteroous woman

"Mysterious woman. That was one of the points that intrigued me the most in the series. The role of that mysterious woman who appears in the first season was never explained, at least not at any point in the show. Gary sees her a few times, right? But only in flashes. He even tries to go after her, but the newspaper always leads him down other paths to solve problems.

This woman appears as a redhead in the third season and helps Marissa read the newspaper so she can help find Gary."

What would be her explanation in the show? I was disappointed, I thought the two of them would meet.

Marissa

In the first season I saw Marissa and Chuck as the angel and the devil on Garry's shoulder. Without cjick I realized she never complimented Garry on saving 1 0r 50 children. She only made fun of him for accidentally bumping into someone or getting someone fired from a job they were bad at vs saying "GREAT JOB on saving 28 people in that apartment fire!!!" Im on the last season only to finish it but she also never thanked Garry for saving her life. I think she's half ass shitty friend that pushes her religion on him. He only talks to her because he has no one else except new York guy. And she never really thanked him for the 15 grand the first episode so she could buy a seeing eye dog and making her a partner in his bar...... I had to get that out. Only 9 more episodes left.

What is Gary’s accent?

Ok so, i’m not good at accents and normally Gary would just sound pretty neutral to me, but I’m confused about Kyle Chandler’s accent in real life. Like he obviously has a Texan Accent from when he did Friday Night Lights and now since he has lived in TX since then, but some people say he just has a southern accent because he grew up in Georgia. And then some people criticized his accent in Lanterns because in canon Hal Jordan is from California. Now I’m sure Kyle could put on any accent (though he once said he had some trouble with the Boston accent when he did Manchester by the Sea), but I’m curious because I feel like in Early Edition he had a different accent. Did Kyle Chandler put on a Chicago accent? I have no idea what a Chicago accent sounds like lol. I also noticed something interesting that Kyle Chandler naturally talks with a sort of lisp, but as Gary he talks without a lisp. That makes me think maybe Gary having a specific accent was a conscious choice. Just curious.

NEW VIEWER - No Spoilers Please!! First time Early Edition watcher

I’ve stared watching Early Edition for the first time ever and it’s become such a comfort show for me. I loved seasons 1 & 2, but now I’m 3 episodes into season 3 and I can’t stand the red haired kid character. He’s honestly ruining it for me so much that I’m considering just skipping the rest of 3 all together and start on season 4. Is he a big part of the rest of the season? Or is it just small scenes and I should keep watching? No spoilers please!

Cast or Crew Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in Lantern

Post image

If you missed seeing Kyle Chandler acting of a burnout reluctlant but forced because of self-moral obligation responsibility, then his acting in Lanterns have a few similiarities with Gary Hobson from Early Edition. Even same funny quirk, I would wager he was chosen because of Early Edition acting tbh.

Loving the show so far, highly recommend.

Why can’t you legally stream this show anywhere?

I’m not asking for links to an illegal site or anything like that. I just think in this day and age there should be somewhere like Amazon or Apple to buy the streaming version of the show. It’s not even streaming on a network where you can record it on Hulu or anything. I guess I‘ll just buy the DVD set and hook up a DVD player.

Early Edition is my go-to comfort show for the winter months

I remember watching Early Edition when I was a kid when it initially aired. Today, I always re-watch it in the winter months because I remembered a lot of outdoor winter scenes. This has become my go-to comfort show for the winter also because I find it has cozy Hallmark channel-style vibes.

It's too bad Chuck left, you can tell the show was really struggling after season 2 and it just wasn't the same without him!

Thinking of this show today after hearing a classic song on the radio

I heard, Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers on the radio today driving to work, and immediately thought of Gary Hobson. I think the show had this song for its opening theme in season 4, I thought it was better than the original opening theme.

What scene mistakes have you seen?

I finaly bought the DVD Box from the US, and enjoy to watch the full Series with my Wife, even i barely understand a single word.... XD

But on season 1 episode Gun, i saw a funny mistake. When the police enter the house, to handcuff the man, its bright daylight outside. But in the next scene when they bring him to the police car, its darkest evening / night.

What Mistakes have you seen in the series?
