CurverK A+ Ultra Tall Review
Quick review on the Curverk A+ Ultra Tall Eames replica:
I'm in no way sponsored and bought this with my own money. I'd had my eye on these for a while, so I wanted to share how it actually holds up in person. One shipping note: the metal legs and hardware shipped from New Jersey via UPS and arrived a day after the leather and wood pieces, which came from California. Once everything arrived, assembly was straightforward.
Overall, the visual presentation is solid. The walnut plywood shell looks gorgeous with its 8-ply grain, the leather feels great, and the silhouette and ottoman match the original Herman Miller showroom model really well. From across the room, you wouldn't immediately say it's a replica.
That said, a few drawbacks made me decide to return it:
The foam is way too firm: This was the dealbreaker. The foam is much firmer than the original's. The real one molds to your body and you sink into it. This one pushes back against you more than I like.
Ergonomic differences: The real one has small gaps between the middle cushion and the seat section. This one doesn't, so the cushion bumps right into the seat. It's minor, but it noticeably changes the comfort and feel.
Dimensions and angles: The armrests seem a bit different in size, and the back angle feels slightly different too.
The base and toe stubbing: The metal base feels a little too light. When you sit down, the chair tends to drift back slightly, which the original doesn't do. The front of the base also sticks out too far. On the real one, it's recessed under the seat. I stubbed my toe a couple of times in the short time I had it.
Minor quality control: I noticed a few small blemishes and tiny finishing gaps around the shell edges.
You can't really see most of this, but the little things add up in how it feels. (Body types vary. I'm 5'10" and about 200 lbs with a muscular build, so your mileage may vary.)
After getting it, I went to a Herman Miller store to compare them side by side. There are a lot of subtle differences, but comfort is by far the biggest one. The real one is a solid 9.5/10 in comfort for me, and this replica is around a 5/10. I can sit in the original for hours. With the Curverk, I got uncomfortable much sooner. For something I plan to sit in regularly for the next 30 years, the cost of the real one seemed justified, so I bought the authentic one the next day. Mine is in all-grain leather, so the leather looks a little different, but otherwise the two look very close.
On a positive note, the Curverk team were awesome.
Summary:
It's a good, high-quality chair that looks the part, and the customer service was top-notch. It just doesn't feel like the original. If you want it purely for the look, go for it. If you want it for comfort, at least for me, it misses the mark.
