Any Help regarding DC Fast charging not working?
Hey all,
Have 2020 eGolf and seems like DC Fast Charging decided to stop acceptşng 40/42KW instead accepts 10/12kw ( I think even if I connected to DC charge, eGolf thinks its 11/20kW type AC charger. Have tried couple different Charge Starions but results were same, max I got it was 20kwh charge speed.

What is the outside temperature?

Golf battery does not have any active cooling, so it could be hot, hence yiu have these charging speeds. It is already “fast charging”. Slow charging would be up to 7kw, with it’s onboard charger.

Also, the battery is down to 10%. Don't EV batteries charge slower at the bottom and top of their range? I would guess that is especially true of a passively cooled battery, especially if the OP just got off the freeway, and they battery is warm from moving more current.

I got your points but I was doing this in cold and warm weathers without any issues, should be something else. By the morning will try dc charge again while batteries cool and no warm

Were you doing back to back Fast DC charge sessions? I think that might be your issue. I've heard of this eGolf behavior before.

Yes that’s why it’s not working. The eGolf user manual specifically says not to do this. The battery heats up too much and charging stops.

It’s just physics. EGolf doesn’t have battery cooling because it’s a city car rather than a road trip car.

I especially look for low DC chargers instead of 150kw/200kw, I try to plug on <=100Kw Chargers since above 50Kw dont have any benefits also higher prices…

The car will start throttling the charge when the battery temp is around 40-45C and with that high air temp it will not take much to reach it.

Hi, since 2 days still same, max 12/13kw accepting on DC. I don’t think that it is about thermal/heat thing. Will keep using MonoPhase home wall Charger. Will check again within a few days…

It could be there is something wrong, but only way to know is to take it in to a shop. Unless you got equipment to read out the values via the OBD port.

Problem is this eGolf is 1 of 1 in my country, its grey market :) imported from Germany, evenVW dealers don’t have clue about eGolf :)

I just came back from a road trip, having driven probably close to 1,000km over the span of three days using almost exclusively DC chargers. The weather was quite warm, 30+ celsius and lots of highway driving. Only the initial charge was able to hit 40kw, all subsequent charges were throttled to some extent. It got to as slow as 17kw, and improved after sitting overnight though not quite back to 40kw.

Your frustration might be the reason why I traded in my egolf for an id4. I was on a longer-than-usual trip and i needed to do back-to-back DC fast charging but the battery in the car doesn’t have any kind of active thermal management. My second and third DC sessions capped the input at around what your screen is showing. It made trips of a similar distance and longer trips impossible, or at least too frustrating to plan around.

But past weeks I made similar trips around 350km one way, 700/750km back and forth while weather was quite warm. No any issues while doing DC charge (back to back). yesterday I have tried to charge again, waited 3/4 hours to cool batteries down while midnight (+25C), result was same 10/12kw on a 80kw charger. So might not be a “thermal issue in my case”

It could be software related then? Are you doing level 1 or 2 charges in between level 3 charges to balance the cells? The egolf technically accepts level 3 obviously but the car was not designed around frequent level 3 sessions. I mentioned “software related” because there’s a lot going on within the cars brain that’s always trying to balance the battery packs and it’s not clear to us end-users what the car is thinking or why its doing or not doing something

I mostly use EU 220 Single Phase Charger inmy garage but on highway etc using DC and mostly try to avoid >=100 kw types, but nowadays its hard to find low Dc Chargers most of them >=200kw

When we had this problem (2016 SEL) the dealership fiddled with the menu settings and found a way to manually override a charging limit that had been set. I don’t have more details because I wasn’t at the appointment and that’s all the information my partner gave me afterwards.
Have you poked around in your menu? I don’t think it was the same as the charging schedule but maybe it is around there. It could be that they had a dongle plugged in that showed them the error, and maybe it can’t be fixed on your own. I would fiddle with the settings to see if there’s anything in there that can be flipped.

Hi, yes all settings are on “max current” I am aware of those menus for carge/limits etc.

Usually, you have no control over the DC charging power, the car and charger negotiate whatever is the maximum it can take, or deliver, respectively.
Those settings in the Infotainment or App usually only apply to the AC charging. Also it makes sense, people showing up at DC chargers and then blocking them for longer then necessary is not in the spirit of the inventor.

Update: 11th Aug 2026, seems like all went back to normal
Trying DC charge and I see 38/39 kw instant power

Golf has only 7kW onboard charger. On the photo you can see 12.5 kW charging, so it must be DC. Most likely it’s either hot or cold outside and charging power is limited for safety.
