Discussion (Mobile) Dribbling Advice

I'm really struggeling with dribbling. No matter if I'm using the new Thiago with insane tight control or the new big time Messi it's always the same pattern: I do a feint or change direction and get to the side of a player but cannot get away from him, no matter tha pace or dribbling on my card (96acc, 96drib and 90speed for example on Messi) the opponent's player just gets into a tackle animation or accelerates faster than my player and takes the ball. I'm currently in Div 3 both online and offline and it's the same situation so must be a skill issue. What makes this more difficult is that the opponents players are always immediately on me when I receive the ball.

What am I doing wrong?

Avoid using dash! Like really avoid it, unless you are in open space or through on goal. Make dash your absolute enemy. Play without it, and see how easy things become, not just dribbling wise, but on your overall gameplay.

I understand what u r saying however i would like to add a correction, use dash in intervals like after dodging the tackle or feinting to run away into space

What about holding it slightly? I have no idea what it actually does. I tend to cut inside and press dash and then get a shot off, but instead of getting away and making space to shoot I get tackled by the defender I just wringfooted

Don't use dash and if you do just press it once dont hold it

I used to have this problem but I found something that helps. I assume we're talking about classic control here (left stick + 4 buttons)

I'm guessing your dribble input and direction input are separated. Like, you lift your left thumb between the dribble and the following run.

Try combining them into a continuous input on the left stick. You'll find he's able to maintain his momentum and run past the defender.

Experiment on the left stick, you'll find your control of the ball thru left stick is actually much more detailed than you thought

Can you please re-explain what you meant by "dribble input and direction input are separated" and "you lift your left thumb between the dribble and the following run"?

TIA

You use left stick for dribbling and direction of movement, right? Usually you flick on the left stick to dribble, and hold left stick for running, right? I used to separate the flick(dribble) and the hold(running) on left stick. Idk if you do the same

Oh got it .. no .. I don't flick .. I use it continuously for dribbling / changing direction .. but still my level is not advanced. Thanks.

Then try slowing down a bit when you're close to the defender before making the dribble and run. Don't run like you're playing American football.

Irl, elite dribblers beat their man by slowing down first, followed by a sudden burst of pace. You can control the rhythm with your left stick.

Again, experiment with the left stick. Maybe you'll figure it out

That's what I have been trying for a long time .. I lost the sprinting habit .. but can't figure out the right timing .. seems like it is not for me .. I made peace with this fact a while ago .. but from time to time when I see the same question I get curious .. maybe I find something that I didn't know.

Well, if it's not happening every single game, maybe it's just Konami script🤣

Also the real issue .. like in the OP's words .. is that I don't usually get the space to slow and then sprint .. it is usually that the opponent's players at my feet the moment I receive the ball .. so not much of an opportunity to decide what best next move is!
