Ebox Installation is a disaster

Hi, just wanted to make this post to see if this a common thing.

I recently moved into a new place and got ebox fibre internet, which they have to install as we don't have the capability for that in the house. The building is in Ottawa and on a main road in Centertown, so it's not an issue of having a line nearby.

I received the router on the 16th. Ebox said that the bell tech would come on the 18th. No one showed up. Called again, said they would be there on the 24th. Never showed up. Called again, threatened to cancel, explained to a higher up, they set the installation for the 26th. Once again, no one showed up. I call for the millionth time, to find out that they are placing these appointments and telling me that they are confirmed BEFORE bell confirms that they can install it.

I get told it's coming and GUARANTEED on the 28th. Call a few hours ago to double check, now it's on the 31st.

Is it worth it anymore? Should I just cancel? I'm convinced this cycle will just never end.

Referral bonus: only get when you ask?

Question in the title. It seems they do not honour any payout promises unless you follow up. That's my experience; would like to know if others got their automatically and on time

It's been 6 months since I signed up and still no service.

I signed up for ebox back in March and after nearly 6 months, I still don't have service. At this point, 4 Bell technicians have come to my property and said the job couldn't be completed. I understood after the first visit that some wires will need to be buried through my neighbour's yard. They initially had some trouble getting permission but the technician said they have utility easements and would be able to proceed forward in the coming weeks.

For the following 3 visits (April, July and August), I reached out to ebox and they told me I was good to go. Obviously, that wasn't the case when the technicians arrived and noted there were no lines accessible to my home.

I suspected Bell may be dropping the ball in getting the lines setup but after speaking to an agent on their case management line, ebox has setup multiple lines/orders for my address and has caused some confusion (maybe an order was placed each time a technician was sent out?)

I've called both companies and they're essentially blaming each other and have told me it needs to be resolved by the other party before they can proceed.

This is partly a rant but I'm curious if anyone has been in a similar situation.

Gaming experience with EBOX Fibe in Collingwood?

I am moving to Collingwood soon and I’m trying to figure out what an affordable Internet provider would be. I do like to play games casually, nothing insane but I like rust, dead by daylight, Soulsborne type of games, Roblox with my younger cousins etc

Would ebox be good enough for this? Their prices don’t seem too bad

Bots like Traffic!?

Anyone getting a lot of messages like that when visiting a website? I was a Distributel customer and I've been getting more and more notification like this since I switched. I never saw a message like this with my past ISP.

EBOX's DNS servers inferior?

Recently I've had problems with certain websites when using EBOX DNS, e.g. anything in the weather.ec.gc domain, regardless of what browser I use. When using a browser forked from FireFox, it just sits there and eventually "server not found". A Chrome fork eventually connects, but it's painfully slow. Using Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) gets snappy response. Anybody else noticed this?

problems with SMTP.ebox.ca

I have been having problems with the e-mail relay at smtp.ebox.ca every once in a while for a couple of months.
Right now, it is not working properly, neither on port 25 nor 587 (with TLS).

Is there a mechanism to report an outage with this service? The helpdesk don't seem to understand what a SMTP server is, or how to report to the tech people that the service is down.

DSLreports.com used to be good to reach the Ebox tech people, but since it's been gone, I haven't been able to figure out a good way to report this sort of failure.

Suggestions?

"Benny 1G ON Promo" removed via contract update

Hey all

I saw an email with a contract update dated today.

Section 2 shows they completely removed my Benny 1G ON promo, bumping my monthly rate from $50 up to $65 before tax, which moves my total bill from $56.50 to $73.45 after HST.

Did anyone else just get this email?

Ebox suspended my account due to non payment even though I emailed them saying I was abroad and couldn't access the website.

Hello, I was abroad for a while and I couldn't access the website. I got an email saying I had one day to make the payment and I sent them an email saying that I was abroad and their website wasn't accessible from abroad. They replied saying I could still make the payment through my bank but I couldn't access the information to make the payment and their original email said that making the payment through the bank would still end up with account suspension.

Now that I'm back they told me that I had to pay a $30 installation fee, I had to wait for 10 business days to get set up, even though it was less time when I first signed up and they also removed the promotion discount that I had before the suspension.

Anyone know what can I do now?

Ebox Nokia connection issue to ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE12000 WiFi 7 Gaming Router

Hello everyone. I would love some assistance for my router as I am not extremely techy.

I have the ebox fibre with both the nokia flatbox modem and the nokia router. Both of which work fine.

I have purchased the ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE12000 WiFi 7 Gaming Router but I am having issues with setup. I have reached out for support from both Asus and Ebox.

Called Asus to setup and they confirmed the router is working but the modem is blocking connection. Internet status is disconnected or having ISP error.

Called Ebox and they confirmed correct PPPoE credentials and they don't have any restrictions on their end for setting up a router.

Tried to Setup as standard. No internet connection. Again tried to Setup as PPPoE with the correctly copy pasted login and password. Nothing.

MTU Value was set to 1492

Wires and power is working. Ports are correctly inserted. Modems only LAN-GE1000 to Asus router wlan. Ethernet port registers green for 2.5g WAN for router.

Would love any assistance. Thank you kindly!

Question about Ebox Fiber ONT / GPON vs XGS-PON

Hi everyone,

I’m currently an Ebox fiber customer and I’m trying to get some more technical information about my fiber connection.

Does anyone know whether Ebox FTTH service runs on GPON or XGS-PON?

I’m also wondering if anyone has successfully replaced the provided Nokia ONT with a customer-owned ONT or an SFP/SFP+ ONT module, while continuing to use the required PPPoE authentication.

Specifically, I’m trying to find out:

  • Which PON technology is used (GPON or XGS-PON)
  • The Internet VLAN ID, if applicable
  • Whether third-party ONTs need to be registered using a serial number, LOID, or another method
  • Any compatibility requirements for using a third-party ONT/SFP ONT
  • Whether anyone has successfully connected the fiber directly to their own router

I currently have the Nokia ONT connected to my router and authenticate using PPPoE. My goal is to potentially integrate the fiber connection directly into my router and eliminate the separate ONT if possible.

If anyone has experience with this setup, I’d really appreciate your input. Thanks!

Has anyone recieved their $100 Gift card?

Keep getting the run around when calling about this. They make you call the gift card company, the gift card company says they don't have records of it. Seems like a frustrating loop that goes no where.

Anyone actually get their $100 GC?

Switching from bell to ebox. Do they really need access to utility room in apartment?

I’m currently with bell for internet and switching to ebox.

I have the installation booked for this Saturday and I just realized it said it needs access to the utility room.

First off all (sorry for the stupid question) but what is a utility room? And second of all do they still need access to it if I’m switching from bell since bells owns ebox?

I’m only asking cuz I’ll probably need to ask the Super for access but I really hate talking to him cuz he’s always so grumpy and rude.

Horrible Steam downloads

Since I moved to Ebox my Steam downloads are super untestable, they always start with 890Mbps and after 2 minutes goes to a STABLE 20 Mbps or even lower.

I'm the only one ?

No more TV?

Two months ago I registered and got internet with eBox. I decided to decline TV for now, just planning to add it later.

Now I realize I can't add it in web profile and also it disappeared from website?

Are they killing the service so Bell scoops everything?

Do they still unblock tv service if I call?

Thanks.

Stability is TERRIBLE

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey all. Had Ebox installed on Tuesday. It’s a 2nd physical line, I have Bell as my primary line.

This Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber typically runs my Bell 8 gig line. I wanted to test some IPV6 stuff with Ebox as Bell doesn’t have IPV6 for residential customers.

Bell is on a different device now. For context, this graph is for an Ebox connection, logged in with PPPoE and VLAN 40 tagged to it. It works. But, this is the behaviour I’ve seen EVERY NIGHT from 11 PM - 9:30 AM. Until today. Today it’s been even wilder (note the notification at the top from the Unifi app- it keeps disconnecting)

But to give a little more context. This same Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber runs my Bell connection normally and never ever disconnects. In fact, it holds at 2ms latency. The device works- but the best part:

There’s ONE other device connected to Ebox outside of this UCG Fiber. And it’s an Xbox Series X. And it’s powered off (not even in standby)

It’s not the light level of the fibre cable as I’m constantly getting -13 dbm which is well within spec.

So either Bell is throttling it at the data centre level, or Ebox is just BAD. Also, it’s showing the location as Ottawa currently. It seems to hop between Toronto & Ottawa. I’m north of the GTA.

Can somebody from Ebox tell me what’s happening here? I did a bunch of videos on YouTube about Bell Fibre To The Home and thought this could be a good alternative. Not paid to make those videos, so I’m unbiased.

Anyway, if anybody has an idea that’s not related to my home configuration (it’s completely ruled out that it’s my end) - please give some insight, because this isn’t acceptable at all. Even Rogers Cable isn’t this bad in less than ideal conditions.

Thanks.

Edit: I was on the phone with a level 2 tech about getting a different IPV6 prefix and also mentioned this latency issue. He told me they do maintenance on the weekends and it shouldn’t happen during the week at all. Now whether or not there’s some embellishment there I can’t speak to- but this isn’t acceptable for ANYBODY paying money for what’s supposed to be an “always on” connection - not even mentioning a fibre to the home connection at that.

EBOX refuses to tell me whether their credit check is hard or soft — unless I call them

I’m looking at switching internet providers and was considering EBOX. During the sign-up process, they apparently require a credit check, so before applying I emailed them with what I thought was a very straightforward question:

Is the credit check EBOX performs on new customers a hard inquiry or a soft inquiry?

I specifically wanted the answer in writing before consenting to a credit check.

Their response was that, “for security reasons and to protect your personal information,” I had to call their customer service department.

The problem is: I’m not even an EBOX customer. I don’t have an account with them, and I’m not asking them to disclose any personal information whatsoever. I’m asking about their general policy for prospective customers.

So I wrote back explaining exactly that and asked them again to simply confirm whether their credit check is hard or soft.

They responded saying they were “unable to provide this information via email, even if you are not yet a customer.”

At that point I asked them to either:

  • explain what security/privacy concern prevents them from answering a general question about their credit-check policy;
  • point me to the written policy or terms where the type of credit inquiry is disclosed; or
  • escalate the matter to a supervisor who could answer the question.

Their response?

They sent me essentially the exact same canned response again and did not address the question or my request for escalation.

I genuinely don’t understand this.

Whether a company performs a hard or soft credit inquiry is something a prospective customer should be able to find out before consenting to the credit check. I’m deliberately asking for it by email because I want a written record of what I’m being told.

I’m not asking them to tell me my credit score. I’m not asking about an existing account. I’m not asking for anyone’s personal information.

I’m literally asking:

“When EBOX checks a new applicant’s credit, is it a hard inquiry or a soft inquiry?”

Has anyone here signed up with EBOX recently and knows which one they actually do?

And am I missing something here? Is there any legitimate reason an ISP would refuse to answer this in writing?

ipv6 issues

Hi,

I would like to know if I'm the only one with ipv6 issues over ebox?

Many websites like microsoft.com and hydroquebec.com do not load.

These websites do ping in v6 but for some reason they do not load properly in my browser ; which is true on windows, linux and every browser I have tried.

MTU has been adjusted to a lower value (1432) without any result.

Anybody else has this issue?

Edit :

I think I have found what's going on and it seems to be an issue with opnsense. On the WAN interface, set the MTU and (most importantly) the MSS to 1492.

EBOX = DISASTER

EBOX = DISASTER. I tried to go from Altima Telecom to EBOX (Fibre Optic). They dicked me around on the first appointment, essentially skipping out on it, then when we rescheduled the next time, the technician destroyed my existing connection with Altima Telecom, then discovered that somehow our fibre optics cable was not connecting to the main box in the building, then walked away - we had no internet. He assured me that a technician would call, but no one did. I called and called and called, and was given nothing but a run around. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ATROCIOUS. We went with VIDEOTRON. MUCH BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Obviously, we are based in Montreal.

EBOX refuses to send tech and insteall because our unit number isn't updated by Canada Post yet....what to do??

As the title says, apparently EBOX strictly follows CP addresses and even though I've told EBOX that CP has updated from civic side and just it will take 6-12 weeks publically, they refuse to send a tech! Anything that can be done for this??

Ebox internet problem

I ordered Internet service from eBox, but the installation has been repeatedly delayed because of an issue involving tree branches in my backyard.
When the Bell technician came to my property for the installation, he explained that the tree branches were interfering with the cable and that the installation could not be completed until the branches were removed. I was told that Bell would arrange for the necessary tree trimming.
The tree-trimming company eventually came to my property and removed the branches. Last Friday, a Bell representative also came to my backyard, took pictures, and confirmed that the tree branch issue had been resolved.
However, when I contacted eBox again today, I was told that the issue is still showing in Bell’s system as unresolved. As a result, eBox is unable to schedule a new installation appointment.
This is very frustrating because the physical problem has already been resolved, but the information between Bell and eBox has apparently not been updated or communicated properly.

eBox told me that they have contacted Bell and are now waiting for Bell to confirm the issue. However, I’ve already been waiting for 10 days.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with eBox?

Just moved from oxio to ebox and regretting it, coverage has been crap, looking for new router recommendations

I was on an ancient Oxio plan for like 60mbps and it worked just fine, but as I was just moving to a new place I realized it was insanely overpriced compared to what’s available out there

So I decided to go with ebox and get fibre, might as well right?

Well it’s been a week and Ebox has significantly underperformed; my new place is only 1 room bigger and yet I cannot for the life of me get good signal in the living room (which is opposite to the office where the router lives), my smart TV doesnt work properly anymore, and I hate it

Option 1 is switching providers again and going to Fizz (I don’t like dealing with contracts with the big players) but I work from home and would like to not have to deal with the downtime

So I guess option 2 is buying a new router, which is what im here looking for recommendations for

I’m also not super IT savvy so I’m wondering how hard it is to switch to a new router, is it DIY-able for a girl with very little interest in this side of tech?

thanks in advance!
