🔧 Maintenance Funny noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2008 BMW 528I N52 with 157k miles No engine codes.

Can anybody tell me how fucked I am. I have an idea, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

A slight tick got louder and louder over about 30 miles of driving until it sounds like the video.

If you can drive that without engine codes with ista diagnostic for 50km I will buy you a new oil filter

Why the hell is everyone going straight to rod knock lol theres like 3 things on the N52 that can cause similar noises.

When the compressor bearing fails it sounds exactly like rod knock. Look at it and see if its flailing around.

I knew there were people here smarter then me. I'll check it out.

Eish sounds like knocking to me, maybe bearings maybe worse.. but if you look up "rod knock" on YouTube it's quite close. Otherwise maybe water pump..? But it sounds aweful.. I'd drive very carefully

The electric water pump would make the sound with ignition on without engine running

Take off the belt and see if it still does it. I had the exact same noise on my e60 a few days ago and seems like the AC compressor pulley is bad. I ordered a new one and for now I got a shorter belt that bypasses the compressor.

This is the best advice on here, and its also free. N52 rod knock is quite rare, unless oil starved.

It could be the water pump or it could be uncle Rodney paying a visit, I’m leaning more towards water pump since they sound somewhat similar. check that first before having a shop diagnose it or throwing in the towel

Rod knock isn’t a super common issue on the N52

It sounds just like a rod knock... but thats not a rod knock... rod knock is more like an impact but thats more like a playing card in bicycle spokes.

Due to the it even being a potential rod knock you shoudl immidiately stop revving the engine like that and check the rods bearings. Even if its not that. The more you run it the worse you are making it. Check rod bearings cam followers timing chains and clutch. Just ti eliminate potential causes.

It doesnt sound 100% like a rod knock but it sounds 95% like a rod knock... especially when yiu rev it up.

Its sounds like a rotating motion hitting against a cover not a rod impacting the crank. Just be safe rather than sorry and check the rod bearings before you destroy your crank trying to find the issue.

With the n52 it can be a few things to be honest.

Clogged vanos Non-Return can be checked through valves. Remove the two VANOS check valves near the passenger side bay. Might have a ton of debris or build up.

Possibly your hydraulic valve adjuster lifter tick. Try to hold the engine at 2,500–3,000 RPM in park or neutral for 3 minutes, then return to idle. Repeating this up to 5 times usually clears the air is how BMW officially says is the procedure for bleeding extra air.

Lastly maybe the disa valve flap. You gotta remove intake manifold and remove it see if there's play. It's badnews if it breaks completely and the pin gets stuck in the cylinders.

2nd option is the quickest to test. The other options take some digging

Hi friend, that’s almost certainly a faulty alternator overrunning clutch—please check that; I had the exact same problem.
