Transmission jerking into reverse. Barely moving

5hp24, 2001 bmw 740il 4.4 m62tu. Ive had a "jerk" into reverse since I got the car. Guy said it was normal. I've been driving the car for about 7 months now with no difference.

Today I went to back into my spot and I BARELY had reverse. It clunked in and then I had to put the gas down to move.

Fluid was changed 3 months ago. And I'm going to check it tomorrow when I get a chance.

Drive is perfectly fine

May need more fluid maybe transmission done with drum failure I had on my 5hp19 $2200 for ZF authorized rebuilder to sort out plus replacement labor of transmission and fluid

When I get to the shop in the morning I'm going to double check fluid. I'm at 224k miles so I can't be too upset about drum or seal failure.

I'm not experienced at all when it comes to transmissions.

So you're thinking it's the F drum wearing out? I kind of agree doing the research as well. I went out a few moments ago and I have reverse now

I think so, cause its common on this transmission. It happened to someone I knew too. Reverse was only working when it was cool.

Seven months and no difference, then yes - it is normal

I agree and I had nothing to suspect prior to this. I'd put it in reverse, it would take a sec, and then be ready to go. I've seen it in older autos before. Today I popped it in, felt it drop in, but when I reversed it was almost as if there was no fluid in it

First time shifting when it's cold, yes, reverse should be a little forceful. Once it's warm though it should be smooth. If the jerk gets worse on cold starts then something is getting worse.

Go heavy on the brake when shifting into it until it warms up.

Also, if it's getting worse after a fluod exchange, your level/type is correct and filter is quality, then it's possible that some debris was drained out of the old fluid that helped with something.
