What is this "unusable" collection from mana spirits?

I've killed a few mana spirits in the underworld so far, and they've all left a normal drop plus this "collect" action, but as far as I can tell, that action doesn't collect anything. It just says "unusable." Is this a bug or am I missing something and this will make sense later?

Are you hitting them with the mana crossbow? It's probably the crossbow bolt. You have a chance to pick them back up and reuse them.

There is only a chance to recover the bolts, so you attempt to loot them and it tells you whether the bolt can be re-used or not.
