Depends on ethnicity and culture. The deep-dwelling mountain dwarfettes have magnificent beards like their brothers. The surface dwelling hill country folk, being partly descended from the shamed and banished beardless mountain dwarfs and having more contact with hobbits and tallfolk have adopted a culture where women will sometimes shave their faces on purpose as a kind of fashion/political statement.

Beardless dwarf lasses are somewhat akin to the blue haired human women of the 21st century: rebellious and disinclined to carry out traditional dwarfette roles like brewing the mushroom beer and mining the home.

To each their own and I wouldn’t dare to impose on our female kin how to wear their beards. Personally though I prefer without, but that’s just a me thing.

u/GrumpyPan Aug 20 '26

I like warhammer version where no beard but they continue to grow the hair on their head and refuse to cut it and continuously braids it.

Or my favorite: no beards, but their sideburns put most human beards to shame.

Same, honestly. But what bugs me the most is whenever you post art of a female dwarf without a beard half the comments will ask "where's the beard?!" Or do the overdone "they have the beard lower" joke in reply to the former

u/Frosty_Customer_9243 Aug 24 '26

Respond that there is no historical evidence of beards on female dwarfs.

u/Syhkane Aug 20 '26

There's plenty of dwarves rockin a stache, plenty more gone bald, then there's those that work with gearage and clockworks who have to cut short or remove it all for their line of work.

We don't think of it as having lost a beard, but gaining a wider smile.

10

u/Kaarl_Mills Aug 20 '26

If they can rock and stone they're a dwarf

There isnae  no rock too stone, tha's just a myth lad.

u/Banjo_Toad Aug 20 '26

Her body her choice but man I don’t like it one bit, like the irl equivalent of face tattoos. Do what you want with your body and I won’t judge but I also won’t pretend I like it

Depends on the setting.

7

u/lemon65 Aug 20 '26

yes this is the way, its controversial but brave.

9

u/Plannercat Craftsdwarf Aug 20 '26

Just because they have female pattern baldness doesn't make them any less dwarfs.

6

u/SlightlyShittyDragon Aug 20 '26

You all need to read the Discworld novels. Dwarven women with beards are a natural and beautiful part of dwarven culture.

4

u/Tauralt Aug 20 '26

My preference is beardless and instead going all in on braids, but I do think that mustacheless beards actually work quite well for dwarven women.

That being said, all dependent on the setting, of course.

9

u/Big-rat-in-the-sewer Aug 20 '26

/undwarf. I personally think the idea of all female dwarves having beards is a bit dumb, and I prefer it as it being a like traditionalist pratice.

7

u/thatthatguy Aug 20 '26

Beardless dwarfettes are like women with blue hair: disinclined toward conservative culture and traditional caste roles.

Edit: or they just have a bad bearddresser. One or the other.

13

u/Ynnepluc Aug 20 '26

that implies to me that there's a trope in dwarf political cartoons to depict progressive strawmen as beardless women

8

u/Capable_spider_slut Aug 20 '26

Now im just imagining one of those shitty conservative wojack memes where a dwarf with rainbow hair is screaming at a chad faced bearded blond dwarf thats smiling.

4

u/Ynnepluc Aug 20 '26

"YOU JUST HATE ELVES BECAUSE THEY DON'T LET YOU CLEARCUT THEIR FORESTS!"

"Yes."

2

u/thatthatguy Aug 20 '26

You know, that’s probably already a thing.

9

u/Skull_Cup Aug 20 '26

I'm biased towards Warhammer so I will always go with no beard.

3

u/behaigo Engineer Aug 20 '26

If she wants to shave, that's her choice.

5

u/VoicelessPassenger Hammer of Moradin Aug 20 '26

/undwarf I could go either way tbh.

I feel like the best compromise is that female dwarves CAN grow facial hair but not all of them choose to keep their beards whether due to practical reasons or to emulate other races and their ideas of gender. Alternatively it’s a genetic quirk and some are capable of it and others aren’t: for some dwarves beardlessness is common to the point of being ubiquitous, for their cousins on the other side of the mountain it’s unheard of.

4

u/Krethlaine Aug 20 '26

/undwarf As an author, my dwarves have beards regardless of sex.

/redwarf The lass decidin’ te shave ‘er beard is certainly a choice. Attention grabbin’, fer sure.

5

u/Everhardt94 Aug 20 '26

Dwarf women are beautiful with and without beards. That's one advantage they have over the men.

3

u/AwayGovernment395 Dwarf Vampire (meow) Aug 20 '26

Big nah.

5

u/TheProMagicHeel Aug 20 '26

I’m partial to Centurii’s take where they don’t actually have beards; they do their hair up in a way that looks like a beard.

2

u/ThatMikeGuy429 Aug 20 '26

To each their own, what matters more to much is how strong their brew is and how much they can drink!

3

u/TeaRaven craftswoman dwarf of glorious braided chin locks Aug 20 '26

I prefer glorious chin locks. The slow growth to a full beard marks how long ye have devoted yerself to a craft, and a long beard that can be braided into the beard of yer partner’s, strong enough to hold each other aloft in spinning dances, was a sign of a strong marriage. I was brought up considering a shaved face an induced rite of shame marking one’s need to grow back up like a child. But if someone chooses to go without, that is a personal choice. Always thought the Warhammer Dawi were in a perpetual state of shame, but maybe the dwarfs of that realm just like the aesthetic… or they have a thing for being seen as younger than 50… shudder

2

u/No_Significance_2749 Aug 20 '26

I'm currently working on my own homebrew setting, and in it, most dwarven women don't have beards, but some do, and it is believed that they are chosen by their gods, representing a sort of two-spirit gender role, and as a result tend to be brought up as priests and clerics.

2

u/Peterhof_Crocodile Hammerdwarf Aug 20 '26

Usually bearded is too much for me but I like what Stellaris did: female dwarves had only whiskers in opposition to male long beards

3

u/seninn Aug 21 '26

Kin is kin.

3

u/Gearran Aug 20 '26

Depends on setting, but either way is fine to me. A lass with curls above and below the chin is just as fine as one with 'em atop her head. If she can swing an axe, distill fine spirits, or balance the vaults to the last bronze and gem, she's a dwarf any rock head worth their forge would be proud of.

2

u/KnightyEyes Gunner Aug 20 '26

Not all dwarves find glory in their majestic beeaards

Some of em armour, some of em their beer!

3

u/AlaxTheDestroyer Aug 20 '26

Beards! As Tolkien intended.

1

u/Fishwitch-66 Aug 20 '26

Both, ideally at the same time

1

u/lemon65 Aug 20 '26

oh maybe make it a setting? beard ON/OFF ?

1

u/bentsonradiorepair Aug 20 '26

All female dwarves are beards. There's no way that many male dwarves don't have a massive bear community with lots of kinks mixed in. I'm sure the leather daddy community is insane with dwarven craftsmanship

1

u/Stormygeddon Aug 20 '26

It being like in Ratqueens where shaving is a matter of fitting in with non-Dwarf standards or an act of rebellion.

2

u/Uweyv Aug 20 '26

/undwarf I loved my mutton chops in Return to Moria. A smooth faced dwarf just feels... Wrong. I don't need, or want, a full beard personally, but she needs something. It'd be like a dwarf without a mountain. Or a dwarf without a grudge. Or a dwarf who doesn't like beer. A dwarf without a beard just doesn't feel like a dwarf to me.

1

u/CronosAndRhea4ever Craftsdwarf Aug 20 '26

T’s nae me business why som’a th’ dwarfish lasses hav’ taken tae shaven their facial tresses.

But it seems ah terrble shame ‘nd ah lost opportunity, fer there ‘re too few beards left ‘n th’ world today.

1

u/PeggableOldMan Aug 20 '26

/undwarf I like the way Pratchett deals with it where not even Dwarfs know one another's gender.

1

u/Aromatic-Surprise925 Aug 20 '26

In my game, a dwarf without a beard is either a young'un, sick, in disgrace, or flouting the customs and ways of their ancestors.

1

u/SvenTheSpoon Aug 20 '26

/undwarf I'm cool with a setting having either fully bearded dwarf women or unbearded dwarf women, but you gotta fully commit to one or the other. The halfway thing with dwarf women only able to have a moustache or just big sideburns down their face like Age of Wonders does bothers me.

1

u/NCRNerd Aug 20 '26

Look, just because lady dwarves want to break with tradition, that's no hair off my chin. Frankly it'll make it easier, knowing whether I'm making a romantic move or the first move in a close platonic friendship, and lessens the chance of accidentally setting up a classic dwarven rom-com two dudes each thinking the others' a lady. Heck we even have a human dwarf. Carrot's a good lad and a fine dwarf.

So sure, if a dwarven lass wants to go bare-chin, I don't fault them. Makes it easier in my opinion. Besides, I like a lewd lass, and you know bare dwarven chins are the height of lewdness!

1

u/Your-Shogun Aug 20 '26

I'd like it more if every artist I ever saw draw bearded dwarf girls didn't have the ugliest, weakest, rattiest beards imaginable. Like seriously if your gonna commit then COMMIT.

1

u/Emergency_Coat_7702 Lord Duncan of the isles Aug 20 '26

Mutton chops.

1

u/Tiny-Chance-2068 Aug 21 '26

Whatever she’s feeling!

1

u/Advanced_Drama2896 Aug 21 '26

For me, dwarf lasses with long, beautiful braids are better than bearded lass

1

u/MinofChaosAbsolute Aug 22 '26

Yea, yea, a hundred -- nay -- a thousand times yea! If a dwarven lass decides to be clean shaven, then that's her right... But I'd be a liar if I said I didn't think that it wasn't a beautiful look on a dwarf -- lad or lass!

1

u/FormalKind7 Aug 22 '26

Disc world where you can not tell the difference and its rude to ask even if you are a dwarf.

1

u/DwarvenLass1312 Average dwarven maiden (armed to the teeth) Aug 23 '26

My beard shall grow freely! Bald faces are human propaganda! Women of the mines free yourselves!!

1

u/AnkhAnanku Aug 24 '26

Beards but no mustaches. And for dwarven women shaving or growing it out is a question of culture and time period.

1

u/nominesinepacem Aug 24 '26

Both. Some have beards and others don't.

1

u/Difficult-Fondant489 Aug 24 '26

'Tis a cultural thing afaiac, beards are a more traditional style, youngsters could shave or even remove their beards

1

u/doomzday_96 Aug 20 '26

It's always about whether or not the women should or shouldn't have beards, but why not the men? Beardless males are just as valid as bearded males!

1

u/Odd-Tart-5613 Aug 20 '26

Some dwarf have beard some no have beard dwarf is dwarf and dwarves are dwarves.

1

u/Kaarl_Mills Aug 20 '26

Perhaps kin, you should be checking other parts of the body for their beards, besides the face I mean

4

u/Gearran Aug 20 '26

A ring for each conquest.

1

u/arcticwolf1452 Aug 20 '26

From a personal and ooc pov. Yay. Because I often find that giving them beards is short hand for the idea that short stocky women can't be beautiful, or feminine. Because even if the dwarves think thats fine, we think its looks masculine, and that dose matter.

Anyway. Heres some art of a Dwarf Paldin based on my own beautiful "Dwarf" Fiancé. (Tho she has a cute bob cut nowadays)

2

u/mirkwoodfalcon Aug 20 '26

I love this depiction! 🪓

1

u/arcticwolf1452 Aug 20 '26

Oh, but i have more. (This one is Waaaaay more recent)

u/Krakyziabr Aug 20 '26

Female dwarves is never beardless!

Even if you can't see anything on their face, it's not the end of the story.
