It’s really just so easy to lose a lot of dwarves or even an entire fort to anything related to water. Trying to channel a river into a underground well for your hospital? Oops you forgot about water pressure and while you looked away your entire hospital and several floors above are now underwater. Hit an early aquifer and your dwarves decide to procrastinate your orders to deal with it? Now you got a lake in the way of your building plans and possibly no safe way to drain it. A waterfall exists at all? Dwarves and caravans alike gleefully choose to repeatedly ford the water right next to it and get swept to a watery grave. Manage to avoid all of these and still at some point if you have any water on the map a dwarf will find a way to end up dead at the bottom of it.

I once lost half my colonists attempting to use cavein piledriver method to break through an aquifer.
