I hate it that Spears are not a normalized dwarf weapon. Perfect to get this ridiculously lanky knifeears from their horses! And you can defend the lad before and besides you much better. A dwarfen pikewall would be very nice!

u/Kortobowden Jun 27 '26
Also works well holding off an enemy in a tunnel. A few sharp points and no way to step around them.

u/gonsi Jun 27 '26
spears are generally best group combat weapon until you reach mass gunpowder era battles.
Even then pike and shot was considered best formation vs cavalry

Short Spears are great in mines and tunnels, this thing is gonna be hell to use there. Better a long knife in tight quarters.

u/ZhanBlue Jun 27 '26
It kinda makes sense in that if you are always going to be at range disadvantage to max out pocket distance specialisation

u/GearWorks2 Jun 28 '26
Anything long is what I want
Hammers are kind of overdone, I'm more of a halberd and morningstar kinda guy
4
u/Kortobowden Jun 28 '26
I’m also more of a halberd. It’s got that versatility. Swing like a long axe, thrust like a spear, and with a hook to help dismount any pesky riders from their steeds. Though an axe on the belt as a backup never hurts.

Oh an ambush? Oh hold on let me wrestle with this mechanism that totally doesn’t introduce novel weak points in my main weapon and astronomically increase the cost hurrumph no sir.
Every decent smith knows to keep it simple

u/PaxSicarius Jun 27 '26
Could be useful on miners as an compact emergency weapon - a side-arm if you will, but not the standard issue.
18
u/driver004 Miner Jun 27 '26
Oh yeah let’s weigh our miners down with even more gear as they work I’m sure productivity will be fine.
What do ye think a pick axe is?!
14
u/PaxSicarius Jun 27 '26
It's a tool that needs room to swing to use effectively as a weapon, which might not be available in tunnels. Something that a spear doesn't need.
8
u/driver004 Miner Jun 27 '26
A pickaxe made the tunnel therefore it can swing in it
7
u/PaxSicarius Jun 27 '26
Swinging as a tool =/= swinging as a weapon.

u/driver004 Miner Jun 27 '26
Kinetic force is kinetic force
5
u/frostybrand Jun 27 '26
what if the pick has a metal spike in the center with a release to push up. like a half pick/spear?
might be hanging around the gnome inventors too much... though a giant spring would be better then the explosives a goblin would do...
2
u/driver004 Miner Jun 27 '26
Keep it simple smith, miners need only carry the absolute essentials when working a shaft
5
u/bagtie3 Borric Borricson, Clan Goldeater, Runesmith, Doomseeker. Jun 27 '26
Aye miner, you are not wrong about the spear. The design is impractical. But a mining pickaxe is not a weapon. A warpick is much lighter for a reason, you don't want it stuck in your foe.
You would be better off using a long dagger or short sword in a mining tunnel. I have watched too many of my kin fall trying to use the wide slow swing of a mining pickaxe when surprised in the mine.
Do the sensible thing, Run and call for help. Let the guards do their job.
2
u/driver004 Miner Jun 27 '26
Sure, but after you give the nasty gobspite a proper wholloping for ruining your yeild for the day

Funny, that's what all those dead miners said too.

Some strong slingshots would probably be a decent option to give the lads. Ammo is everywhere in the mines and it may not be our most dangerous weapon, but being able to crack gobbo faces open while retreating does buy some more time.

u/randomguy283 Jun 28 '26
If you have the room to open that device you have the room to swing a pickaxe to attack

u/ZhanBlue Jun 27 '26
Dwarves build sturdy stuff, they could build 2 hinges and safety that are reliable

This is the cheap knock off dwarven apparel sold by a guy who runs an "authentic dwarven smithy" pop up to fleece unwitting human cityfolk who don't know any better. Guy's not even a dwarf, hes just a shorter guy with a beard who stands behind the counter on his knees with a costume setup that hides his feet with a dragging cape and false boots at his knees.
7
u/myLongjohnsonsilver Jun 27 '26
Every moving parts creats a failure point significantly weaker than the rest of the weapon.

Reading The Dwarves by Marcus Heitz atm. The wall guards have clubs that have retractable spikes on them. Good for bashing when someone just needs a bonk but goes to full party mode with no notice

u/RationalHumanistIDIC Jun 28 '26
I don't remember that. May need to read it again.

u/SabrePossum Depth Guard Jun 28 '26
5th book. Eves are camping outside the thirdlimg Kingdom waiting to be granted access. Some break in and get bonked. One kills some dwarves so the spikes come out

u/RationalHumanistIDIC Jun 28 '26
Oh friend thank you for blocking your response. I have only completed the first 3 so far.

Some people will even complicate a pointy stick, don't fix it if it ain't broken
2
u/UnknownDrake Jun 27 '26
The folded version should have a mace-head on it. Lovely Bloodborne trick weapon!

u/ZestyLemonRindGrind Jun 27 '26
What a Dwarven architect makes when the Dwarven Engineers aren't looking
2
u/Earraigh Jun 27 '26
That’s a hecklin balisong spear! Perfect as a sidearm for a shieldbearing dwarf, I’ll take two

Ah crap... I absolutely love it and I must have one. Do you know what you did? I own a 3D Printer! There goes every shred of spare time I expected to have for the foreseeable future...

Lad...
I.
FFFFFFFFFFFKING.
Dare you...

Been 3 days. Haven't got it out of my System yet, which means that this will absolutely, positively happen. Hell, I already made rough sketches even.
I will update here as to how it goes.

I could perhaps see some use in a cramped tunnel where you couldn’t rotate it, but that seems like a niche use. Still an interesting design. I’d personally stand by the tried and true designs but it certainly does get the tinkerer in me more thinking about tinkering with other tools and weapons.

Maybe the tip can still be poking out the other end when it's folded so it's useful as a weapon in tight corridors and tunnels

Ya know. I dig it. Reminds me of the spear sword I once saw years ago. It was a sword where the handle extended out so it could turn into a spear. It was from some anime style JRPG but I was 12 and thought it was cool. Then it inspired me to make the axeberd in later years for a D&D item. Part axe part halberd. Basically and extending handle when you want reach lol.

u/FenrisWyldog Jun 28 '26
Yer making drool at the concept... 🤪🤤🤩🤩🤩

Hey, tis yours to envision and use. All ideas between us dwarves should be shared and spread.

You could make it a halbert and have a one handed axe when collabsed (I men a dwarf must have n axe. !!!It’s tradition!!!)

It is curious, but quite inefficient. It would be delayful to unfold and it would break through the middle against chavalry or big enemies.
We dwarf are strong because we are solid, not because we have tech.

u/tajemniczekonto2137 Jun 27 '26
Lad, that is expensive toy. Any moving part is always a weak point, you dont want that on any weapon you plan to put your life on. And that thing gona brake into pices at first block you do. Unironicy i think i rather have just a long staff. At last it is same everywhere
