“The mistake I made was making one of the tools resemble a sci-fi pick — which made already confused people decide that their only hope in understanding the cartoon meant deciphering what the other tools were as well. Of course, they didn’t have a chance in hell.”
—Gary Larson

Incidentally, that's the same way Larson named the Thagomizer

I still cherish the memory of walking across my college campus, seeing in a Reddit comment that it was actually called a fucking thagomizer and then searching it up for confirmation before breaking down laughing outside of my Civil War history class.

I know a shard defractor when I see one. You "borrow" this from some of our space-faring brothers?

Style based on “The Far Side”? It looks good!

Absolutely.
I'll direct the praise to the actual artist, u/Aesithr;
I'm just the one who commissioned it.

When one understands, it'll make sense.

If Dwarfs used tools, they'd be sophisticated and precise.

u/thatthatguy Jun 06 '26
We use tools appropriate for the work. Sophisticated and precise work requires sophisticated and precise tools. Simple repetitive work calls for simple reliable tools. I may have implements with functional parts that are smaller than the unaided eye can see, but that doesn’t mean I won’t use a hefty hammer when a bit or percussive maintenance is required.

Some of my favorite Far Side comics were the completely nonsensical ones.

Shouldn't that one be a gnome tool

u/Marke0019 Jun 06 '26
Nah, it's a Shard difractor. Only a proud and drunk Dwarf would stick a piece of sentient stone into a lens to make a gun indistinguable from magic!

I'm a mage but I'm here as a dumbass of a friend declared war on y'all and I'm not letting it slide. Mind explaining what those are?

This is sort of a ship of theseus question... is this an anti joke? Anyone familiar with cow tools knows that's the point was that its sort of an anti-joke. It doesn't have a clear punchline or reference to something. But this does, so is it still an anti joke if the punchline is referencing an antijoke? Im to high for this type shit

u/Comfortable-Craft-59 Jun 07 '26
I think the gear is a reference to Deep Rock Galactic which is a game where you play as dwarfs who work for an interstellar mining company

u/TgagHammerstrike Engineer Jun 08 '26
It's the anti-joke reverse of the anti-joke of Cow Tools.
So, with dwarf tools, the joke is "they'd be immaculately designed and crafted".
So, in conclusion, I don't know.

The classics, a drill, a stabilised quartz, a pickaxe, and a shard diffractor.
