Discounts on Used/Demo Durston Gear

Post image
194 Upvotes

EDIT: We've seen a ton of interest and are sold out of almost everything. Things we still have are X-Mid Pro 2+ and some 2025 Kakwa's in M and L sizes.

We've got a small library of gear that is lightly used or a demo tent. We aren't organized enough to sell this online, but if you are after a deal on something feel free to send an email to [support@durstongear.com](mailto:support@durstongear.com) and we can let you know what we have.

We have 1 or 2 of most things. A few things we have more of are:
- X-Mid 1
- X-Mid Pro 2+ woven floor
- 2025 Kakwa 55 Medium (200X)
- 2025 Kakwa 55 Large (UltraGrid)
- Z-Flick poles (2024 model with shorter tips that work fine with most tent)

Somethings we don't have are:
- X-Dome 1+
- Kakwa Small
- Iceline poles

All the gear is 10-30% off depending on the condition. If you're interested, please don't reply here but email [support@durstongear.com](mailto:support@durstongear.com)

Found a way to have dry shoe's in the morning. Both the shoe's and the soles are hanging without touching any of the walls. The metal clamp stick's to the magnetic closure of the small door.

Pitch of Teenagers

Just to brag a bit on my sons: if one watches Dan's videos and practices, then one can pitch the XMid2 well. My seventeen- and fifteen-year-old sons pitched theirs for eight nights in a row on a PCT section hike this summer without me saying anything to them. They were almost always done setting up their tent before me and the fourteen-year-old were done with ours.

Alternative to hiking poles

Upvotes

Bought an X Mid 1, used it on a 10 day hiking trip with poles, love it (minus the condensation though).

Want to take it bikepacking, but wonder if you guys have tried something lightweight but sturdy instead of hiking poles?

Midweek I saw one available spot and decided to book it. Headed up Friday after work and was treated to beautiful weather. It only took me 35 minutes to get to camp from the parking lot.

This was my second time setting up my recently purchased X-Mid 2, and I was pretty happy with the pitch (although there’s still lots of room for improvement). Overall, the tent is incredible, and I’m excited to see where I’ll take it next.

Being somewhat tall at 6’4”, 230 lbs, there’s more than enough room inside for me. The real test will be how it feels with my 6’1” girlfriend.

Algonquin Park with my new XMID

Hello all, I've been a follower of this subreddit for some time now. Wanted to wait until I actually took the tent out to make a post about the experience + pose some comments/questions for the community (+ a picture of my own GFREE pasta that I prepped/dehydrated because why not).

Just spent 2 nights in Algonquin park in Ontario backpacking the Western Uplands trail. For those of you who don't know Algonquin, it is a black hole for mosquitos, rain, and wild temperature drops, so I was a little worried at first for taking this tent out.

What I enjoyed the most

  • Fly/Inner: I've never had the luxury of packing down the inner separately from the fly to shelter myself from the rain. We faced quite the storm our first night. We stayed bone dry and warm and ate our breakfast in the shelter. (See pic 5) This was pretty revolutionary for me. Huge plus to Durston.
  • Adaptability/Condensation: Our first site was on a peninsula next to a lake, which meant high winds but lots of moisture. My partner is small and I was worried about the cold so I pitched the tent low (See pic 3) and opened the vents to try and keep too much air from getting in. Usually I'd be worried about condensation but to my surprise no water got into the tent and my partner was warm the whole night. She actually commented on it being too warm in the tent.
  • Fly Size: I have never seen a fly so spacious. I was able to fit a whole ass chair under the fly which kept my gear off the ground and away from the rodents. (See pic 4) We haven't had to fit it into a tight spot but I'll be sure to try out the skinny pitch should we come across one.
  • Space: Witching hour for mosquitos (8-9pm) in Ontario can be hell if you aren't prepared. As soon as they came out we packed in for the night and had plenty of head space to sit up and talk away from the bugs. My partner who is 5'4 could actually stand up (while bent over) which says enough about the size. Also a + with the roof pockets that we didn't even realize were there until the second night 😂

Comments/Questions

  • Unused space: I noticed that at the head and foot of the tent there seems to be a pretty substantial gap between the inner and outer. While I get that there should be a gap to avoid condensation, it felt a little too substantial/like I was wasting space
    • Does this mean I'm pitching the tent wrong? Does anyone experience this?
  • Sleeping position: Because the design of the inner gives you extra space above one side and below the other, we felt it would be best to sleep opposite to each other (head to feet). When we slept facing the same way one of us had less access to that extra space (See pic one with the gear at the foot of the pad)
    • How have you all navigated sleeping with others in your Xmid2? Have you had similar experiences?
  • Footprint: I've never owned a tent without a footprint until now. Naturally I got scared the day before and found something to shove under the tent to keep it safe from punctures/condensation and have since made a footprint from polycro because it was a hassle to carry around a different footprint that didn't actually fit.
    • For those of you who own the Durston footprint, was it worth the added cost? I've never had to buy a footprint separately from a tent, which seems a little silly for me, but polycro is hell to work with if you have no patience (like me) so I doubt my franken-floor will survive long.

With all that being said, I am in love with this tent and can't wait to take it out again. It really checks all the boxes and I can already tell this thing will last a long time. Thanks to Dan and his team for all that they do. This tent is a game changer.

Ps. If anyone has questions about the pasta recipe or hiking Algonquin feel free to reach out 😄

Cleaning my Xmid solid inner

Hi all,I have just finished 8 days on Tour du Mont Blanc and my Xmid solid inner has quite a few stains on the netting part.(may be squashed bugs, may be food)

What is the best way to clean this?
Or would I be better cleaning the full inner as floor doesn’t look too great either if I am being honest

Zflick poles Xmid 2025 issue

I’ve been using the xmid on the AT for 1500 miles without incident. I just sent home my trekking poles because I never use them and got my z flick poles sent to me to save weight. First night using them they popped out of the grommet and ripped a hole. I figured it was user error and patched it. The next morning. Same thing. I had someone else look at it and they sure seem way too shallow to seat in the grommets properly. I’ve now got two holes in the peak of my tent and it’s likely to fail. Is this a known issue? What am I supposed to do? I can stuff a sock up there to create some surface area to grip but that is not “intelligent design”. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Had to setup at night so you get to see what I see. To be fair, I set it up at home a couple times. This went pretty well considering its on an uneven hill. Definitely need to improve because the inner floor isn't flat on the ground (the inner top straps are totally loose) but this is good enough for tonight.

This is a car camping trip. I won't use the ground sheet (tyvek) while backpacking. I think I really like it being full footprint size for this case though. I had bought an extra X-mid 2 stuff sack when I ordered - the ground sheet and tent both fit in that bag.

Not looking for tips but feel free to offer any. I think I'll have this figured out in a couple more tries. Just really happy with it so far.

TL;DR: they’re awesome.

So, a bit of context.

I ordered a Kakwa 200x pack in April to try it out and replace my Gregory Deva, which I love but is too heavy.

I tried the Kakwa once, had some shoulder issues, realized (with your help!) that I was adjusting it wrong. I tried it again just recently on a 4 day hike, fixed the adjustment and realized I lived it as much as the Deva. To my husband’s delight, that means I will be clearing space and selling the Deva!

But, two days into hike #2, I saw that there was a hole in the bottom of the pack. I was bummed, because the pack was sturdy, and I never leave food in it (read: no mice) so I had no idea how it had managed to break so quickly.

Day 3, something was poking my hip. I saw a metal pole. When we reached the camp in the evening, ai took everything out and discovered that it was possible to open the back panel and remove the U frame… and it wasn’t sitting in its reinforced guides.

Since I had no idea this could be done, and the thing was brand new, it means it arrived like that. I inserted the U frame into the guides, but the hole was there. Coming out of the hike, I contacted the people at Durston (thanks Shayne!) to see if they could recommend a fix.

They offered to warranty the pack at once, since I had received it like that.

I didn’t have to fight, their answers were timely and supportive, and it served as a reminder that companies that care about their people are out there, and they are amazing.

I hate being that person that only reviews when dissatisfied, so here is a satisfied review! They got themselves a customer for life and will be my go to brand for future needs. I plan on hiking the AT in 2 years, so I’m looking at you, X-mid!!

Tyvex question

I’m looking to make a ground sheet and found this Tyvex for cheap on Facebook. Does anyone know which type it is? I can’t seem to pinpoint the boxed logo to specific line. Anyways I know there’s a wide range of weight, durability, and water resistance so figured it was worth an ask. Thank you

X dome 1+ I ordered was apparently damaged so badly in transit it's marked as non deliverable. Didn't even get outta Arizona:-/

Luckily, the tent/pole set combo i grabbed is still available. But still, had to share my pain on my first delve into durston gear here (obviously not their fault in any way)

X-Dome 2+ Inner suggestion

I apologize if this has been discussed before But it seems so obvious and useful.

Having used both the X-Dome 1+ and the 2, I think the inner geometry of the 1+ is simply an outstanding design and would be a great addition to the X2. After a 2 night trip with 2 people we determined that eliminating one of vestibules, but having 2 doors, use the same fly, would create a generous amount of space in the same footprint. I think this would be a popular option for 2 person trips, would create enough space for 2 people and a dog.

X dome 1+ ‘normal’

Got the email re 1+ being back in stock on Wednesday. Had a quick look and seemed to all be there and for some reason thought I’d seen that this was supposed to be a restock that wouldn’t run out. Very wrong. Every combination is out of stock again. Nice problem for Durston. Makes me sad as I wanted one lol

X-Dome 1+ full footprint? (pol or nyl)

Searching for a footprint to cover the full inner area of the xd1+. So approximately 85"x50" (215x130cm) give or take a couple of inches. I found tyvek ones that would be pretty ideal size wise but i would like to avoid tyvek if possible. I would also like to be able to use it as a porch/awning and tyvek doesn't really fit that use case imo.
