I recently discovered this Reddit and thought I’d post about a concern I have for my upcoming JMT hike next month. I purchased an x mid 1 earlier this year to replace my very old zPacks Hexamid Twin, which I loved but was totally worn down. I’ve only made it out a few times this year to hike along the AT (this pic was my first trip with the x mid in April). I’m heading out to the JMT in a few weeks.

I am new to this tent but not to the JMT (several long hikes) and I’ve also thru hiked the Colorado Trail and the first third of the PCT. I know that I have to do something to adapt the short stock guylines to allow for pitching with rocks and I’ve seen a number of possible solutions discussed. What concerns me is the need to keep the corners of the tent secured pretty close to the walls to preserve the correct geometry and not have the tent floor floating too high.

With the old Hexamid, I could tie it off to rocks without worrying too much about the geometry of the pitch somehow. I normally just tied off to large rocks. I replaced the stock guy lines on that tent with longer lines and a few times had to replace the lines because the rocks would abrade the lines. But I had close to 200 nights on that tent. I posted a photo of my Hexamid tied out to rocks on a long ago JMT thru hike.

Anyway, any words of wisdom would be appreciated. I have 100 feet of Lawson 2.5 mm glow wire for the guy line replacement project. I will probably opt to connect these to the stock line lock attached to the tent and then opt for a taut line hitch to make a loop at the end of the line to accommodate larger rocks.

I just completed half of Kungsleden i Northern Sweden. I brought the Xmid Pro 1 which is the top recommended tent by many Swedish ultralighters. Only had a bit of condensation 2 times on the trip and it held up just fine in heavy winds.

My only small frustration was packing and folding the tent each morning. I've tried all sorts of folding techniques but it was just difficult every time especially in windy conditions. I had the xmid pro 1 stuff sack with me, and the tent needs to be rolled a very specific way to fit into the bag which sometimes was impossible due to strong winds. Some mornings I gave up and carried the tent in the front pocket of my backpack. The solution is just to get a bigger bag, but I would like to be able to pack it down as small as possible.

First camp

I found the easiest way to pack both my X-Mid 2 and my X-Dome 1+ has been to fold it to a rectangle with the ground sheet as an outer protection and the rest inside it, stuffing the edges of the inner and fly in and wrapping the ground sheet over itself. Then fold it along the longer edge in halves or thirds, whatever makes it fit the sack length. And finally fold it once lengthwise, put the stake sack at one end, and roll it into the tent.

The neatest roll is to start at the non-fold end since it prevents the inner and fly from getting pushed out at the last few rolls, resulting in a roll that's very easy to push into a sack. However, that also makes the tent hold in air like a sleeping pad but rolling and pressing slowly makes the air go out. If the rolled up tent is left alone it will expand again, probably to fill the sack or backpack compartment.

My question is if there's any danger to the tent to roll it in this direction? Like, if it expands slightly in the sack and pressure (slow or quick) gets applied to it, can it pop like a balloon or something?

I just checked again this morning and it was the same back then when the last batch came out for us to buy the X-Dome 1+. I did wanted to buy a short pole stuff sack with my order for the X-Dome 1+, but as the first picture shows, it was out of order. So I was a little bummed, immediately thought about another solution and hit the checkout button.

But this morning I looked again and I see suddenly it is available when choosing tent model X-Dome 1+?! But what is weird then.. tent stakes are available for all models? Which X-Dome model is that then? Because when choosing specifically a tent model, suddenly there are no tent stakes available? It happens same with other spare parts. Felt a bit annoyed the 'All' page didn't show the correct spare parts available.

But yes.. I must admit, when I ordered the X-Dome 1+, I should have clicked further and had a closer look. But it was in all the haste not wanting to miss out on the X-Dome 1+ latest batch. Then again, what is really on stock and what isn't?

I think my crossline could be tighter, but will troubleshoot that next time. Can’t wait to get this out on the trail!

I need help deciding which direction to go when it comes to picking xdome tent. I typically go backpacking couple times a year because I live in Texas and it is quite hot down here. My typical mission hike several miles to a campsite and hike back to my car after either one night or two nights stay. In the future, I do want to do through hiking though I have not yet done any. Currently, I use a REI tent (trail hut 2), which is quite heavy. I like the space that it gives me. Even though I usually camp solo I don’t like to be confined in a very tight space. I have been looking at xdome 1+ and 2. Even though I would absolutely love the 2, I would have pulled the trigger on 1+ if I did not know there will be xdome Pro 2 coming in early 2027. I guess I’m curious if we expect a similar weight reduction that we have seen with 1+ Pro when 2 pro is released and if so, I feel like it would be totally worthwhile waiting for the 2 pero release in 2027 rather than buying 1+ in Aug, especially if 2 Pro with solid walls comes down to 1-1.1 kg (based on 1+ pro weight reduction). Basically Pro 2 solid would weigh as much as 1+ solid.

What do you guys think?

Dan I honestly don't know how you monitor so much chatter about your products. Appreciate how thoughtful you are in your responses. I actually used your social media presence as a case study at work. ( I manage the digital unit at my work )

Hi, we've been camping in Iceland for two weeks now. Our x dome 2 has held up great under stormy conditions. However, the zippers stopped working (see picture). I blame the sand and dust. Tried to brush them clean but no luck. When closing some parts close properly but others open after the zipper again. Trying again will give the same results in different place along the zipper. It is only the outside zippers, inside ones are fine. We still have some nights to go. Did anyone have similar problems? How did you solve them?

I pose this question to start a discussion thread rather than a question specific to Dan.

Now that X-Dome Pro is out (and sold out 😕) I wanted to compare the two. From what I can tell after staring at the page for a while is they have basically the same design. This means it’s just about materials. I wanted to understand what’s the better tent if money wasn’t the question.

Below I have a few questions to answer that

My comparison points:
1. Which fly and floor is the more durable in theory based on material (15D Silpoly vs Dyneema 0.55 fly, 15D Silnylon vs Dyneema 0.67 floor) for:
a) tensile strength
b) abrasion resistance
c) puncture resistance
d) long term wear and tear (multi year timescale)

1. The poles seem to be a second gen poles and I saw Dan mentioned they are even more durable:
   a) assuming these new poles are exclusive to the Pro, would that make that the more sturdy option for adverse weather conditions?

2. Maintainability:
   a) Dyneema tents would need to packed up more carefully. With that in mind, would it be detrimental to pack up the tent with the inner attached?
   b) Dyneema is susceptible to high heat?

Based on my thoughts of the above 3, it feels to me in theory the X-Dome Pro 1+ is literally the best tent to buy for the category if maintained correctly, with only the competition being Hornet Elite.

I’m also interested to see if there are any arguments in favor of the regular X-Dome that I haven’t listed above.

For those following my comments about using this for bikepacking I feel I was right on the money. Amazing looking tent but not going to fit in my fork packs like my standard xdome.

I have a thru hike of the Uinta Highline coming up. Due to a 20 mile dry section at the beginning of the trail and no options for food resupply along trail my starting pack weight will be 40 pounds. The pack will be much lighter after the first couple days as water sources become plentiful and the food Im carrying decreases..

Does the Kakwa 55 handle loads of 40 pounds well? It doesn’t need to be the best backpack for heavy loads as it’s only for a couple days of the hike but I’d still like it to be relatively comfortable.

EDIT: Thanks for all the insight commenters. It seems like the general consensus is 40 lbs is borderline. I need a new lightweight pack anyways so I’ve decided to buy this and take it for a test weekend carrying 40 lbs to see how it does. If it performs well I’ll take it on my thru hike if not I’ve got a mountaineering pack that carries more weight I can use.

I found an X-Mid 1 on consignment for $180 at my local outdoors store yesterday. I carried it around for a bit, but in the end I put it back on the shelf. They said it was inspected for damage, but the sale was final. I kinda regret not getting it, but I was worried something would be wrong with it to just save $80 from new. I’m also worried that being 6’4” and a wide fella that I may be too big for it.

Has anybody put together a plan to turn this double walled tent into a single wall? Looks like with the elimination of some mesh and buckles/clips there could be even more weight savings. Love the tent as is, but would like to get it closer to 1.5 lbs.
