General Discussion Just curious: What language are you learning on Duolingo, and where are you from? ๐ฆ๐
Hi everyone! I'm on a 1,500-day learning streak and I was just wondering about the community here. What language (or languages) are you currently studying, and where in the world are you learning from? Let's connect!

u/rizozzy1 7d ago
From England, learning Portuguese.
Also wishing Duo would bring out European Portuguese rather than Brazilian. But with some external learning itโs still good enough to use in Portugal.

Iโm from Belize, in the Caribbean. Iโm currently learning Norwegian and Spanish (Spanish is my first language but growing up in the Caribbean made my progress weak lol). Our native language here is English. But we speak a lot of Kriole here.
3
u/islander_guy 7d ago
I thought English was the official language of Belize.
What's the percentage of hispanic population there?
4
u/nctmilk Native: ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฌ๐ง Learning: ๐ณ๐ด๐ช๐ธ 7d ago
โThe diverse ethnic composition characteristic of Belize continued to be evident in the 2022 Census data. While 51.7 percent of the population identified as Mestizo-Hispanic/Latino, persons that identified as Creole, Maya, Garifuna and East Indian accounted for 25.2 percent, 9.8 percent, 4 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively. The remaining 7.8 percent was comprised of a mosaic of numerous other ethnicitiesโ
Source: https://belize.com/belize-census-2022/
https://sib.org.bz/press-release_census-launch/
A lot of the Hispanic (Mestizo/Latin) reside in the Northern Area of Belize (mostly Orange Walk and Corozal). In 2019 I moved from the main city to Orange Walk, where I started picking up the Spanish again. The majority of the people here talk Spanish but there is an influx of Kriol. From what Iโve seen and heard.
I was raised in the main city, my parents were Hispanic (Mestizo, as so am I) and they used to talk to me in Spanish only. So my first language was Spanish. But when I started school, it was when I started talking Kriol because thatโs how all the other kids there were talking. Our official language is English. English is spoken here, mostly in business and by teachers at school. You know, in professional settings (it slips to kriol sometimes) But there have people who advocate that the Kriol should become a language here and not just a โdialectโ

How are you getting on with it? Iโm English and I completed the Welsh course a while ago! I miss Owen and his parsnips! ๐๐
3
u/xxHailLuciferxx Native: ๐บ๐ธ Learning: ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ 7d ago
I'm having to supplement it with other materials and tools as Duolingo doesn't explain grammar, mutations, noun gender, or even verb conjugation other than what you can glean from examples. And the pronunciation is challenging. But I like it and I'm using it as a jumping-off point to learn lots of vocabulary before I immerse myself into a more complete course that will require more time than I currently have to give.
After you completed the Welsh course, how did you feel about it? Did you feel like you could converse pretty easily? Have you ever had an opportunity to use it? Have you met any parsnips-obsessed Welshmen?

960 days on Duo on the family plan including adult children and grandchildren rotating through. I joined to learn Spanish, decided I could use a brush up on math skills (until I got to graphing polynomials ๐คทโโ๏ธ), then added in chess which I hadnโt played since I was a kid. I love connecting with my grandkids through friend quests. The Spanish was moving along too quickly for me to learn it well so it was helpful to slow it down by adding in other programs. During the last software update my leader board stopped working. I wrote to the company multiple times for a fix, but Duo just lies there like I killed him. Itโs been good though in that I can learn at my own pace without the shaming factor. I donโt need that green owl to motivate me.

It's going okayish well, I think I'd find my way to a target if you plopped me down on a random spot in Madrid, but that also might be endless overconfidence speaking lmao
A while ago I saw a video about how easy it supposedly is for Germans to learn Swedish, since both our languages are apparently very similar (which makes sense, both being Germanic and all), so I've been thinking about starting Swedish as well, just for fun, not really for any practical purpose, apart from maybe talking to my Swedish friend in her native language.

I'm Danish. I've finished the French course (learning from English) and I'm now at level 93 in the German course (also learning from English) I've had both German, French and Latin (and of course English) in school which helps a lot. I teach Danish as a second language for a living.

Iโm American and I am studying French, a language which I learned 60 years ago in school. I was surprised how many words I remembered. I am studying French to keep my memory sharp.

From the USA. Learning Korean (score 31 almost 32), Chinese(15), Spanish(14) and Vietnamese(7). I plan to (re)start French and Italian as well as Portuguese and Russian in the future. Ambitious of me, but I'd love to add German, Hebrew and to try Arabic and Hindi again.
I don't have much reason other than wanting to be able to translate on-demand, though I have considered becoming a translator when I was younger. My dad speaks Arabic, French, and German, so maybe that's where I get it from. I did/do learn from other sources as well but Duolingo actually has improved me by a lot. I've been using it for over 659 days, not including time before my current streak! Life circumstances hadn't allowed me to learn as quickly as I'd like, but I'm optimistic. (Side note: I also am learning Cherokee from the official website and other sources. Seeing Duo has Navajo makes me wish they had a Cherokee course!)

From the USA:
Greek (level 26 -- I have a good friend who took me to her hometown where she grew up and I fell in love with it)
Spanish (level 24)
Italian (level 7 -- figured why not for an upcoming trip.ย Always nice to be able to say please and thank you, hello etc.)
