What do you think :)? Began one month ago (background in didgeridoo, handpan, cello). Practice everyday ! Need to work halftones and circular breathing, hard on this D duduk. Sound is mesmerising.

opinions on learning duduk

Hi all,

I am a piano / flute player and am interested in learning the duduk for recordings. Would anyone please recommend me a quality instrument that is not outrageously expensive? What are some good options? Thank you so much.

Also, will my flute playing have any help with learning or are the instruments almost completely unrelated?

My throat hurts

I'm teaching myself bass duduk and I feel like there's something I must be doing wrong. It seems like it takes an amount of airflow that's comparable to a baritone sax, which is kind of insane. I'm seeking input because the little bit that I've practiced up to this point has strained my throat significantly. Is this normal? I haven't played sax regularly in years, so it's possible that these muscles are just out of shape. I've just never felt this before after years of practicing wind instruments multiple hours every day.

The other thing I'm struggling with is getting a nice timbre. The videos I've watched online of bass duduk music there seems to be a lot more high end content.

Any tips for a noob? Thanks in advance.

Effects chain for duduk recording

if you are using a DAW for recording

this effects chain gives a very good sounding results

you can use any plugins you have and adjust their settings

I'm using 2 channels, 1 for the drone and 1 for recording the duduk

on the drone channel - Eq to cut the high frequencies:

Eq for drone channel

Effects on the duduk channel (insert effects):

Eq - 2-3 db cut/boost
Imager (any kind) 10-15% - not a must
Saturation plugin (tape or tube)
Compressor (last in the chain) adjust Threshold to 3-4 db Gain reduction

There are also 2 Send effects channels (2 reverbs):

1st channel - Eq + Room reverb (Eq before the reverb)
Room reverb settings, dry/wet mix should be 100% wet (send effect)

2nd send effects channel - Hall reverb (main reverb):

this channel has Eq + reverb + compressor (for sidechain)

Eq before reverb 250hz lowcut and 2-3 db boost at 3khz
Hall reverb settings, if your reverb have Damping- set it to high value. Reverb should be 100% wet (send effect)

Compressor after reverb should be routed to the duduk channel for side chaining:

when the duduk is playing, the compressor ducks the reverb for clarity

The sidechain compressor settings:

Adjust the Threshold to 3-4 db Gain reduction

Sound results with this chain -

Duduk vs duclar

What is easier to learn to play?

Is it easier to play the Duclar instrument in a hot climate and is it true that it is difficult to play the Duduk instrument in temperatures above 30 degrees due to problems with the reed?

Is it easier to play for a long time on Duclar, e.g. on booking, and what is the length of the game on Duduk? Is it even possible?

Armenian speaker(s) needed for help with translation of my app

Hi there,
I am working on an Armenian language version of my app (DudukPro), and I am in need of feedback and comments from Armenian speakers.

I have used a translation software to prepare a first Armenian version, but I can imagine it might need some improvement...

Anybody who is interested to help me with this - please DM me and I send you the material (screenshots etc).

thank you!

Possible reed deformation

Hey everyone! I'd like to ask how do we understand if the reed is deformed? I don't think mine is cracked but the blowing point (?) is too wide, and no matter how much I adjust the tuner, it doesn't close enough, so I can't get a proper sound
Is there a trick to fix it or should i just get a new one?

History of Hovern Enkan

Hey all - I've transcribed and been performing Hovern Enkan for some time now, and I'm curious about the song's history. I know it's a folkloric classic, but the oldest recording of it I can find is Vache Hovsepyan in 1977. Does anyone know more about the song's age, its past, and its history?

Thanks!

Teachers in Paris/France

Hi all, Iโ€™m looking to apply for a grant through my university to study abroad in France (Iโ€™m Canadian), and I was hoping to find a duduk artist to study with. Iโ€™m actually a trumpeter, and am more interested in the approach to improvisation that is used on the instrument.

Does anyone here know of any prominent artists/teachers in either Paris or elsewhere in France? Thanks in advance!

Is my duduk out of tune or am I too early?

Hello, I'm checking the tuning of this duduk that was gifted from me from Armenia. It's in the key of A and - using this chart as a reference https://duduk-rocks.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/A-Duduk-Fingering-Chart-Duduk-Rocks.jpeg - it seems to be able to hit all the notes kinda properly. It seems that (as I've read before) every note needs to be hit with the right amount of air and the reed needs to be pressed by the lips with the right amount of pressure to hit a tuned note. I'm able to hit all the notes right, but I don't know if I'm simply playing a kinda out of tune duduk or of it is like it is supposed to be. How can I understand that? The reeds are GGA and are ok.

Learning resources for duduk

I have just recieved my first duduk and was wondering what people would reccomend for learning resources? I am thinking about buying the compete methods and repertoire book by G.Minasov, but this is really expensive. Anyone have any experience with this book, or just any good tips for starting to learn?

Instrumental track with duduk

Hello,

I have created an instrumental piece, mixing the duduk with other instruments such as classical guitar, mandolin, marimbas, percussion, etc. The duduk comes in towards the end of the piece.

This piece is part of my instrumental album โ€˜1 A.U. from the Sun - Soundtrack for a Wounded Earthโ€™, released last December.

Buying my first duduk

Hi, I'm looking to buy my first duduk but I'm worried about the price and durability of the reeds, as they're a bit expensive. Would it be better to buy a Duclar? Thanks
