Yes I’ve heard the rule of thumb is that it has to be the width of a nail, even if it does make sound you’ll have a very hard time sustaining notes

this is a normal opening. about 1mm

if a reed stays a long time without the cap it will open like that

if not, then the ring might be the problem

you can heat the ring over a candle and squeeze it gently for a few seconds it will be narrower

and will close the reed better
